No, being able to spot it from that distance means you are one of us.

one of us. oneofus.

By the way, what sale was that at? I was up in Washington county, and didn't see anything like that.
Yup, the old 20/20 vision pays off immensely from time to time. It was at a random sale I found in newberg while my wife and I were out there this am picking. Just a random t.o.o. that we happened upon. All the sales we thought would be good were junk and all the t.o.o.’s paid off today. I’ll post the rest of our finds in the gs thread.

Question related to the box- what year is this ? I’m hoping to look it up in the catalogs

I actually found a top chest in the wild here in Oregon! Was garage sailing today with my wife and I found this for $40. It is missing its medallion and a drawer but it’s pretty straight and not rusty! It’s been sprayed but it’s not horrible. Anyone have a drawer or medallion? Also is this a nugget box? I need to research this one. Also does it mean I’m a sick individual if I spotted this from 30’ away and knew it was Blackhawk 😂? Bas On this sticker it looks to be a caterpillar serviceman’s tool box?
That's a fine pickup. The Caterpillar set, while not a nuggets set, did have some 7/16th drive tools. I can't recall the exact contents right now but they threw a little bit of everything into that box.

Finding a drawer pull is going to prove harder than you think. I still haven't found a perfect match for my top box and I've been looking for 2 years. I can tell you that the Snap-On K60 uses the same knobs.

I would think you would remember that
I think @Smokeshow69 means he wonders if the guy who sold it to him is the same guy who posted it here back in 2021 or if it changed hands after that.

EDIT: That is bizarre, Smoke! It is clearly the same box. It looks like someone started preparing it for refinishing, then dropped the project. Some of the rusty spots are now bare steel and it had the round medallion on the drop-down lid, which is now missing. The medallion was in pretty good condition, so you might should inquire about that and the knobs and such. I would! Maybe they're sitting in cardboard box he just didn't care to remember. It's a weird stroke of luck you spotted it on the "Serviceman's" thread. If it's not the same guy, maybe he knows how to find him.

Lugz is correct. What I meant was, I’m wondering if the same member who posted this box is the same one who sold it? I bought it from that person’s neighbor. I asked the lady selling it if she had more of these and she said-“ it’s my neighbor’s, I’m selling it for him”. I already sent a pm to the member who posted it to see if they have any more parts/tools. From the photos when he got it , it was missing the drawer but it had the hard to find from medallion. Hopefully that member is still active and has those parts. I bought this about 20 minutes from
My house so I would run there quickly if he responded and said he did.

I'd be sure to ask about the missing chrome trim piece that runs along the edge of the lid. Those things are impossible to find and I ended up making my own.

Oh absolutely...but so far he hasn't responded to my pm and the last time he was online was in 2021...also in the picture he posted it's missing on that side as well so I have a feeling it's long gone.

Looping back to the Caterpillar set box in general...I am on archive.org and have been searching catalogs and so far no luck ? I am finding the tractor/construction sets but nothing labeled caterpillar. Is this what I'm looking for or is there something else I'm missing? I have checked pre war, war time and also after war but no luck.

snippet is from the 1951 catalog

I have seen a list of tools (in Caterpillar literature) that were in the Caterpillar Serviceman's Tool Kit and I'm sure I posted it somewhere on GJ, but cannot now find it. Maybe it was in the Snap On Tools thread.. I think it was in a conversation with Snapmom.. I can't find it and just dunno.!
I think I have a print out of the list tucked inside my empty Blackhawk box, but it's hundreds of miles away so I won't be able to look for it until next week.

There are some extra tools in it but the stuff on the list is in there. Blackhawk sockets and wrenches were not marked with cat numbers, also by 51 snapon was supplying some tools such as pliers. I think snapmom has a later version with all snapon socketry

Smoke, I think I have a Plomb made, Catapiller marked 1/2" Sliding T. Yours if you want it, and I will check if I have any other Cat tools.

Also too, Smoke, there are listings for Catapiller in Lugz's master list at the start of the vintage section, along with all 87 pages of this thread. And I think everything you need for that box is marked Cat in someway or another.

Good Luck, you are gonna need it!

edit: OK, a better shot of the Cat tools list is on the first page of this thread: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum...-blackhawk-are-welcomed-as-well.482368/page-2

That t handle would be awesome! I would really appreciate that. I don’t know if I am going to put together the set but I am looking into what I am getting myself into. I’ll check that thread out for sure!

The same thing happened to me when I picked up my porto power set. After getting it home I noticed that it looked very familiar.

twertsy had posted pictures of it a couple years earlier. I contacted him and found out that he had sold it to someone else and I got it from that guy

That’s awesome. Funny how small our collecting world for certain brands can actually be.

Early Blackhawk stuff has really caught on fire over the last two years. I'm not sure how much of it is still buried in old barns and buildings but I have to believe that a lot of the pre war stuff got taken to the metal collection sites for the war effort. Having these items pass through the hands of several members makes complete sense to me. :)

Nice Calypso Coral Mach in the background.

I have one of those bottle jacks like the one on the lower right shelf of your totem pole. Its not as nice as yours, but I use it a LOT.

Not to mention how much regionally can impact the supply and availability. Out here in Oregon, there really isn’t much. So when you see it you have to jump on it quickly. But I do understand that on the same note we have a ton of plomb which a lot of places don’t. But I certainly agree with your train of thought that a lot of items have been scrapped over the years for scrap drives, newer tools, etc. As time goes on the supply will dwindle!

Speaking of plomb, maybe I should sort my spares( a crate full) and trade them with the Blackhawk guys😆👍

Thank you to everyone that helped me find all the ratchets. I will get the hooks and get this hung up soon. Until then we can imagine how it would have looked in the store.

Hey stranger, I was the seller on that last one. Really cool to see you complete this display. Loved the design style and found the action really smooth but didn't want to subject it to the heavy duty work that 1/2" drive entails and am paring down my tools to keep just the stuff I use. Glad to see this go to someone who appreciates it so much!

Seeing this really makes me want to chase the other one that I know about. You're gonna have to get a horizontal line handle 7/16ths now. That torpedo ratchet draws my eye. lol :)

After I restored my tombstone porto power case I've been wanting to clean up this set so today I started the project

The new case

10a.JPG

The project

IMG_2660.JPG

First I sorted through the pieces and removed the ones that don't go with this set.
Next I needed to clean the grease and oil from the many pieces so I fired up the ultra sonic cleaner and gave all the smaller pieces a bath.
Next step while the smaller pieces were cooking I took the hose off the pump and ram and started wire brushing the threads on the longer pipes after wiping them down with laquer thinner.
with the threads cleaned I took my 3" pistol grinder and a piece of 80 Grit sand paper ans started smoothing out the nicks and chips on the pipes.

Here is the project tonight

Very nice work as always.

Spotted this on FB MP, with the text from the ad:

Our father worked for Blackhawk and both designed and holds the patents for many of these pieces. He turns 95 tomorrow and we know he would want this equipment to go to someone who would use it. We have the original literature (see photo) and the original case for the Porto Power. The jack stands are 5 ton. Not sure about the Porto Power—if you’re interested, I’m guessing you can tell by looking at it. It’s either a 4 or 10 ton. Heavy…the case w/equipment is a good 80lbs.

And this: FB MP $40
