Very nice work as always.

Spotted this on FB MP, with the text from the ad:

Our father worked for Blackhawk and both designed and holds the patents for many of these pieces. He turns 95 tomorrow and we know he would want this equipment to go to someone who would use it. We have the original literature (see photo) and the original case for the Porto Power. The jack stands are 5 ton. Not sure about the Porto Power—if you’re interested, I’m guessing you can tell by looking at it. It’s either a 4 or 10 ton. Heavy…the case w/equipment is a good 80lbs.

And this: FB MP $40
Great Score!!

Your Mechlin Gremlins reminded me of these Whitman & Barnes "Brownies" from 1/2 a century earlier.

I’m not typically very excited about speed drivers, but this one seems like a no-brainer, and I think I might’ve done pretty good. Model 39999 in 7/16 Drive

Oh I have spotted it on the Bay couple days ago
Don, I always am game to cut deals outside of Ebay to GJ members, in the interest of cutting the commission (and more importantly the IRS) out of the equation. Feel free to PM me if this is something you can use.

Here's my beat up version of the QD set that Don just restored.

I have to fix one of the latches which may be quite a nifty challenge. I know that the spring is good but what likely happened is someone pulled on the tab too hard and got it out from behind the spring. Now I have to find a way to get that back in place so that when it closes, there is pressure to keep it on place instead of flapping around.

Hey All...….. first post, I figured the vintage Blackhawk thread would be the ideal spot for it. Hoping someone with a lot more knowledge than I on Blackhawk boxes/cabinets might be able to help in Identifying. I picked up this set up about 3 weeks ago for $125 and 1.5 hr. round trip. It has no markings/ although the seller believed it was a Blackhawk. I was told it was his Grandfathers tool box whom had been a Mechanic for 30 yrs. Guessing the man being 50+ yrs old himself, and a little bit of math I can assume that this set-up must be from roughly the late 30's-mid 1940's? Not sure if this Info is useful but it is painted with a Red crinkle paint similar to what S-k would have used in the 1940's albeit green. Any info would be appreciated

Judging by the color and the ghostly oval outline of a long lost decal, I suspect that may be a bonney box. Here it is in 47 catalog

Thank you for this info..... My apologies for posting a non Blackhawk box/cabinet in this thread. I suspected that it may not have been a Blackhawk after looking thru what seemed to be endless posts. However there are a few Blackhawk boxes that resemble this one as well. None the less..... I am happy with the set up and this info will help guide me in the direction of a proper restoration.

Langenau made boxes for several companies in the 1930s. Blackhawk and Bonney were just two of the companies who slapped their logos on Langenau made boxes. Yours is 100% a Bonney box still sporting some of the original crinkle paint.

Even though it's not a Blackhawk box, it's still something I would have picked up. You'll never find anything made nearly as well present day and I assure you that you're the only kid on the block with something this cool.

Welcome.

Agree on that. The bottom box is Bonney as well with missing stripes.
If you go through some of the more recent Bonney thread, there is a black and white picture of 2 Bonney combos there for reference
Does somebody have a laptop to post a link to the picture? (Typing from the phone)

Thus - Welcome to GJ! A great way to join with a very rare and valuable combination!

Run!!! …. Or you will end up doing a lot of reading, learning and acquiring an excessive but interesting collection of tools which you need (and often and do not.). : )

I agree … There is definitely something to be said about the overall quality of these old boxes and tools of that era, and esthetically much more cool as well!! Thanks again for all the Info

Picture speaks a million words as I was born and raised in Janesville Wi. Both my Grandmother/Grandfather retired from the Janesville GM plant. The city is a shell of it's former self since the plant was closed IMO. And the empty lot where the plant use to be located looks like a wasteland. Anyway.... enough about that... I will keep this tool related.

Thanks to All, for the useful information. I will most likely be doing a full restoration on this set-up and will move it over to the Bonney thread accordingly.

In the meantime I will stay on the hunt for awesome Blackhawk items as well. Tool boxes/cabinets, jacks... shop equiptment etc. IMO Blackhawk might be the most unique and interesting company in their heyday.

You're going to have an incredibly hard time finding red crinkle paint. The SK and early Craftsman box guys are in the same boat.

Yes Indeed! It looks like Kennedy MFG offers a crinkle paint. Unfortunately only available in their signature brown. Wondering if lightly shooting a flat red over that would give a reasonable texture? As for the SK and Craftsman guys I think the Hammered gray and green might be the best options. though not exact. I know that there is crinkle options with powder coat, but now we are getting into some serious cost.

Most people go to the hammered paint during restoration, including myself. I haven't fooled with any modern crinkle paint but maybe that would be a fun experiment.
