The vintage Blackhawk Thread

I found this one about two years ago. At the time I had a smaller version also. I eagerly began stripping the paint in plans of a full restoration on it. It had been repainted numerous times over the years and the stripping turned into a really time consuming operation. Half way though that project I found a “bomb box” locally and snapped it up. (I know I shouldn’t admit this but…) I’m more of a vintage Snap-on guy so I decided I didn’t really need three Blackhawk boxes and thought I could live with just the bomb box. I sold the small chest and then realized I had to finish the larger one in order to be able to sell it. I have a lot of hours into finishing this but today I’m calling it done…enough…for me to part sell. Feels good to complete it even if I’m not keeping it.

As found.

So glad to see a Blackhawk thread. They really are wonderful tools, especially the ratchets.

Those boxes and sets look fantastic. I was wondering if you knew of a source for a replacement decal like the one in your 30K box?
Thanks.

Mine are originals on the 30 and 49k but there have been times when I have needed decals for other Blackhawk boxes. Jim's Engine Decals on Ebay and if he doesn't have what I need, there is a guy in upstate NY who can produce anything that you want.

Here is Jim's site:

Nice work there #17 They are a bit of work to make nice like that. You should keep it and find the proper set of tools to go with it.
I have one just like it (same color too) or we'd be talking. I'm not a Snap-on guy but I do have the K60 sitting on the 200 roller but no tools

Yours in much better condition. I have yet to find any release keys
Me too...

I just noticed there were two versions of ratchets for these sets. Sorry for the bad pictures.

Here is a find from last weekend, kinda tucked away in the group shot. Blackhawk vise grip style tool, ZW-1120. Did not find any on a text search here. MADE IN USA

Have not had time to research the age, etc.

If someone needs this, I'm not deeply attached to it.

Pretty cool! Those are well into the Litton era but still really cool.

Had a few minutes to poke around this morning, found the in the 1961 catalog. (May be Younger than me, May have to throw them back)

Both a Vise Grip style, and the Guppy style (apologies to @Private Lugnutz for forgetting the real name)
The Guppy is in 1953, but not the VG. Both gone in 1969

This came with an S-K set and if anyone needs it I don’t collect Blackhawk. It’s 3/8” drive.IMG_6189.jpegIMG_6190.jpeg

Probably just worn down. These were typically stamped pat pending and 7814. The earlier ones were pre-lock on and had 800 part numbers

I am looking for a Blackhawk 7/16” drive ratchet with the bullet style handle. Either 39996 or 39997 as shown below, if anyone has a spare let me know.

It's close to impossible to find a 39996 these days. Anyone who has one and knows what it is will likely not part with it. You can find the fixed handle 39997 on Ebay right now. I saw at least one on there the other day. Of course price is going to be full retail.

I think @Private Lugnutz is trying to collect every flavor of locking pliers that ever existed in the galaxy. I know I've sent him a couple real oddballs.
While I appreciate generosity, before vise-grips start showing up on my front porch like unwanted children, I have to emphasize that for me "collect" is synonymous to "find," buying online and gifts do not constitute "finding", "trying" is an overstatement, and "every flavor" is not nearly selective enough. I leave plenty of vise-grips behind every week at the flea market, and that is where those Litton era "Blackhawk" by name only examples would have stayed. Yes, I am primarily an Early (prewar/wartime) snob, and it always surprises me when 4.c forgets it! :)
the Guppy style (apologies to @Private Lugnutz for forgetting the real name)
Haha. If you're thinking of Whale Tool Corp, you're in the right, um, er, environment, and that's an astute observation. They very likely could be the OEM. EDIT: or maybe Seymour Smith. They had a swiveling jaw model, too. Hard to tell from just the illo.

I have one. It is a nice box. y'sguy restored his dad's box, and it is beautiful.

Mine is missing the chrome trim strips, and I bought a repro emblem. This one seems to have the original emblem, which is a big plus!

I tried to contact the seller earlier today, but no reply so on. (yep, that's the reason for my post asking for help getting the box....)

I hope one of us gets it!!!

I’m not much of s Blackhawk collector but this 3/8” drive ratchet came home with me anyway.IMG_6525.jpegIMG_6524.jpeg

Sadly, this ratchet is from the era when Blackhawk was just a purchased name. You can see by the characteristics that this is a New Britain ratchet back when they owned the name plate.
