Cool! I bet you could some of the orangy rust off with some good scrubbing without losing the original paint. It should look good.

I actually had to use this baldie 39996 on a tight spot job today. I figured that since I have this out of it's normal hiding spot that a picture might be of interest here.

The baldie is one of my favorite Blackhawk designs. This is the only version of the two length reversible handle ratchet that I have ever found. It took me a lifetime to find this one too.
Have you ever come across a 39996 from around 1939-1941?

I've never come across one of the early models. Even the great Twertsy didn't have one. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have the baldie version.

Yea, I've learned this lesson long ago. I have feelers out nationwide though. One has never turned up.
I thought the same thing. I cannot recall ever seeing that version even on here.

Guys, confess who bought a 100DD Blackhawk toolbox from NY!!! I hope it went to a good home - got close, but no cigar (could not travel in time due to work and was planning to pick up this weekend)

It wasn't me but I know where it went. I missed it by a hair myself. I believe this makes 5 of them that have slipped past me.
Thehorse13, It was somebody from NY state. I do not know details... If you know who bought it, please see if the person can share the pictures of it restored/cleaned up with us (if it's a member - they can do it. Otherwise please ask them to send the pictures for you to post if you know them close enough...)

Yep, a local NYer has it. I grew up in NY and have many contacts still in the area. I was extremely close to getting my hands on this one but I was skunked again.
The person who bought it is a friend of a friend of mine. I asked my friend to pass along the request to join GJ and post pictures. I hope that the guy joins because I have a nice, "you ****" waiting for him.

These boxes are quite rare - either they sold very few or a lot of them were not considered collectible enough over the years and got trashed... I wonder if anybody has data on production (doubt it though...)

Yes, any additional pics of this box would be interesting. As far as popularity or cost just like today, most folks probably choose a more traditional color. And to add to that white boxes generally show more grease and dirt. At least that's what "they" say.

OK, I probably worked every waking moment this weekend on restoring (clean, polish, repolish, new product, try again, wax, buff, etc.) this torpedo Blackhawk toolbox. It’s not perfect by any means, but it will have to do...tired out! Of course, I forgot to take the “before” photos. I cleaned up the 7/16”-drive tools I have accumulated so far. I think I am down to seven more (six sockets and one 15” hinged offset) needed to complete the set.

I found an unusual piece of Blackhawk tooling
So today I sand blasted it and gave it some needed attention
After polishing it up I took it into the BPG and found a nice place to hang it

It's an interesting set (probably a No. 6) for a couple of reasons.
That decal, for one. They did use that "Welded Wrenches" branding fairly generically, in advertising pieces for all their products, but it's not in reference to the interchangeable sockets, which were forged, and cold broached. It comes from the era when each socket wrench was permanently fixed to its own handle. American Grinder ****-welded their sockets versus pinning or sweat- or press-fitting them.
The production mix, for another. With that box and the 911 ratchet, it's early 20's, as you alluded to, Sonny, or certainly at least no later than 1926 (and the Q.D. era), but it's not first generation. The sockets would have Indian arrowhead logos.
