First time I've run across a Blackhawk box. This carry box for a 'CHIEF WRENCH SET' followed me home today. The label isn't in the best shape, but it's there. The box is relatively straight, had the handle and the hasp. I'll rub it down and see how it comes out. Here's a couple of pics.

I can't make out the set number on the label. Seems to have been rubbed off. Maybe a 3/4" drive set? :dunno:

This ratchet was in a tool lot I bought. Paid $100 for 4 crates of hand tools. It was fun sorting through them all. This thing is a beast and functions well.

Nice. Found this 3/8 blackhawk free wheeler while looking for stuff for the cat box. Not sure of the year? Has maybe a 0 date code, so maybe 1940. It is a lock on. Still works great!

Hmm. That's a strange one, Otg. In 1935, all the drive tools had knurled handles and the "Free Wheeler" ratchet had model number 9707S. By 1939, the drive tools had "Gripline" handles and the 3/8-inch drive "Free Wheeler" ratchet was model number 34981.

4b55fc91d46a3b01ade79a0a96f45447.jpgBought this Blackhawk box a while back. In fact bought a lot of vintage boxes. This Blackhawk is 3 boxes away from being restored just thought you Blackhawk guys might enjoy it.

I just thought I’d bring this to the attention of Blackhawk enthusissts!

It’s on British eBay right now. Starting bid is £60 and so far no bids!

Looks to be in great condition, and complete!

Nice set! We suffer an unfavorable exchange rate with england, so like 80$ us and 30 shipping.

Awesome resto. Any chance I can get the info on who did your decals? I would be interested in restoring this one as well.

From the 1950 Porto-Power catalog. You have the SA-19 'In Wall Case'. Would have come with the case and 16 pieces. The SA-5 2-Ton hydraulic unit and 15 attachments. Here are the relevant pages from the catalog.

The image of attachments has a chart that lists the quantity of each attachment contained in each 'set'.

A buddy of mine who does sheet metal work for air conditioners made me a drawer for the cat box. Now the search is on for a knob!

Nice find! In fact, I've never seen one before. The model number looks familiar. I wonder if Blackhawk made it or sourced it out.
Don't know, I done a quick search around and found nothing. It does have the feel of Boker pliers, not saying they are but sure feels similar.

As noted in a few threads now, I bought a few vintage catalogs and magazines at the flea market yesterday, including a March 1939 and a February 1948 issue of Automotive Digest. The only major tool manufacturers advertising in these two issues were Blackhawk, Bonney, Plomb, New Britain, and Snap-on. For what it's worth, Blackhawk was the only mfgr who had multiple color and feature placed ads in each issue. Outspending the others in advertising doesn't necessarily indicate their slice of the production/sales pie, but it was interesting to see.

Here are a few of them. Nothing we haven't seem before, no a-ha's here, just sharing some period eye candy.

Nice ads. I've seen the ad with the ratchet a few times and I've come to the conclusion that this ratchet with this particular combination of handle and head design was never produced.

Early 49996. No date code, so pre 38. Has an interesting cam mechanism to switch direction. Has seen some heavy use but still works pretty good.

Not a fine tooth action but very sturdy. Sk was making much tighter round head ratchet at that time.

Blackhawk speed ball handle
Very nice find. Them are Uber rare. 7/16 drive? Was it the massive eBay lot one? I was tempted by that one.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrenches 3055, 3060, 3061, 3062, 3070

Yes bought the lot for the speedball. Could not help myself. It was funny because listed as 3/8 drive. Made an offer on the "make offer" option and the seller accepted, so no getting out of it! Curse my tool addiction....

Glad to see someone curved my temptation. Glad you got it. There is a guy in my town that has one and I got weak in the knees when he showed it to me. Last one I seen on eBay sold for over $500 if I recall correctly a few years back.
Don't forget to take a lot shot. [emoji2]
