Yes, that will make someone a sweet score. They did a pretty good job of adding on the worktop area (and with a cool vise). Also has the original type wheel fairings. I don't know what those things are on the front, that look like u bolts or something? Backplate with little drawers is awesome.

What am I thinking! I already have one that needs completion! :shocking:

So basically what you guys are saying is, if you hang out with the wrong crowd (Betty Boop, Michael Myers, Chuckie from Rugrats, Marylyn Monroe, PeeWee Herman, and Macho Man Randy Savage, among others), expect to be devalued.

Now a hipster industrial antiques store on the other hand...

I think we're all just jealous.

I won't speak for the others, but I'm saying two things: (1) 1,000% is a ridiculous and fool-hardy mark-up, and (2) $4,000 is an insane price for that item.

I've said this before, whenever this topic (insane prices) comes up, but I definitely do not subscribe to the idea that an item's value is whatever someone is willing to pay for it. That only shows what one person is willing to pay for it. It's possible that there are extremely wealthy people in this hobby for whom $4,000 is no object. Heck, I just found out that someone paid $25,000 for a Bugatti vise! But in the field of statistics, these are what are known as outliers, and they are thrown out of any credible analysis.

You have to find the mean. We don't have enough precedence (multiple Blackhawk jack totem displays being sold and bought) to find the mean, but I would guess it would be in the hundreds of dollars category. Finding that thing as a non-collector for peanuts to $100 and selling it to a collector for $400 seems normal. Buying it as a non-collector and selling it for $800 (doubling ones money) is another possible way to go. I can see big Blackhawk spenders going that high. I cannot see even our biggest spenders going into used car category. I will eat crow if I'm wrong on this.

Very well said! On one hand I can appreciate when items we value that most others don’t increase in value because then there are more eyes on our tools and more items are sold as opposed to be thrown out. This has undoubtedly saved countless old tool/ petrolina items and placed them into the hands of collectors but on the other hand, an insane markup with no precedent to go off of does nothing for the hobby. I think that seller will be sitting on that display for a long time!

Maybe there is a divorce going on, and the soon-to-be ex thinks it is worth that much, so "If I put it on Ebay at that price, and it doesn't sell, you agree that it is worth what I paid for it."

Back here in the real world, I paid $1 for these two pieces at a swap meet today. You heard that right - ONE DOLLAR!

- Blackhawk 39997 7/16" Drive Free-Wheeling Ratchet
- Blackhawk 39966 Screwdriver Bit 11/32

Now I can proudly say I found a 7/16" drive nugget ratchet in the wild!

Brian

PS - If anyone is interested, the opening bid is $100 + $25 insured shipping. Good luck!

Edit: In case someone doesn't understand my sense of humor, this is not up for auction. It is, however, available if one of you Blackhawk collectors want it. $1 plus actual shipping cost or trade for something. Anything, please!

That's awesome and sad. Might be interesting to see what an Evapo-Rust bath would do.

I just ordered a gallon off Amazon just so I can give it a try. I have no expectations that this will be save-able but I would like to have the stampings readable. If that's the case, I'll clear coat it and hang it on the wall.

I bet that ratchet looks 100x better after a nice bath in Evaporust. It may even work again. Evaporust has done some magical things on stuff that I drag home.

Did blackhawk ever make hammers? Someone at work told me they had a blackhawk hammer and I did a double take

This topic has been quiet for a while, but I noticed there hadn’t been an example posted. Here’s one. It had the remains of black paint on the sides of the lower half of the handle when I got it; not sure if the paint was original. I recently gave it a coat of shellac, then rubbed it out with BLO and 1200grit.
32oz overall weight (I’d guess 24oz, 4-3/4” head), 15-1/2” OAL. I can’t quite make out the model number.
There are only facets on the sides (not “octagonal” like Stanley or Plumb), if it helps identify the OEM. Very Vaughan, Snap-on/Blue-Point.

I can’t quite make out the model number.
I don't know what the suffix is (or what it means), but the model number for a 24 oz. ball-pein hammer with a 15" OAL handle in the 1953 catalog is HT-1007. It looks like yours was struck with the die badly skewed to the bottom. In 1953, they were still using the old logo. I generally don't collect any tools later than immediate postwar through the early 50's, and I don't know when they moved to that script logo on your hammer.

As for them offering hammers, it could be just a coincidence, but I believe the 1953 Blackhawk catalog is the first catalog in the public domain in which Blackhawk is offering a full line of hand tools (pliers, hammers, punches, chisels, feeler gauges, etc). All of the publications I have seen or have access to prior to that, from the 1920's through 1947, are either wrenches (including socket drive tools) or jacks (mechanical, hydraulic) and Porto-Power equipment. And I have never seen other Blackhawk hand tools with the same markings that we see on Blackhawk wrenches.

Got this from Texas today. Looks like a 20s set. Was surprised to find the decal in good shape.

That looks like a great set.
So how did The Blackhawk CO. finish those type of tools in black. Is it painted or a blueing process? I've never seen it first hand. And lastly, do you have plans to restore these. Just curious.
