Picked this up today at a garage sale. 7/16" drive bullet freewheel ratchet.

Nice find...one of my favorite style ratchets.

The guy had a speedball (39977) as well but I could bring myself to buy it.

These don't come around very often. You might want to reconsider making a deal.

Are you working on a set? Which Nuggets specifically are you after? Any particular serial number range?

I've been after the remaining pieces for my 70RD Treasure Chest and I stumbled over this nice lot of mid 30s goodness. I needed almost everything here and the added bonus is that the ratchet works like new and the tools spent their entire life in the desert southwest.

I've added the 1935 Blackhawk catalog page that shows this fantastic ratchet just for those who may not have seen it.

One thing that is odd to me is that the 8502 1/2 inch swivel is unmarked. Does anyone know if this is common?

That is a 20s swivel. All of the ones I have seen were unmarked.

I know this is the vintage Blackhawk thread, but I have some recent bad news about Blackhawk I just learned on the general discussion that may be of interest. SBD is phasing out Blackhawk. I know Blackhawk wasn't what it used to be, but it's sad to see a classic brand go away permanently. Silver lining is that I think that they will rebrand it as Craftsman and make it available to a wider audience.

Thanks for the 411, LS. But frankly, Blackhawk wasn't what it used to be starting in 1955, when New Britain bought it. By 1963, most distinctions between original Blackhawk tools and NB-branded Blackhawk tools were gone. When Litton took over NB in the 70's, Blackhawk was just a name and that's what Stanley got. It will be sad to see the name go, but it was already devoid of anything original.

Husky was absorbed by new britain as well and has been nothing but a brand since. Williams has suffered the same fate. Snap on used nothing but the name.

Hello folks, I recently got an inquiry form a person on IG about my Blackhawk toolbox. Turns out he found one and got it safely home after a long roadtrip from MS. Has the original flourescent lamp and the original wheels with the shirt around them. Lucky find I say! Needs lots of TLC but still, it's white and it's the real deal. Maybe he will get on here and post it. He was aware of GJ and has some other very nice Blackhawk goods. Then we can all tell him he *****!

Guess it proves they are still out there somewhere!

They are certainly out there and sometimes they appear at, "you ****" pricing. This one slipped through my fingers because of the seller's unwillingness to allow a 3rd party pay and pickup the item for me.

It sold for 80 bucks.

I was the lucky guy until the seller suddenly didn't want my local contact to show up and buy the thing for me. I don't see why it matters but people are strange sometimes.

Does anyone know if these little 1/4 inch drive Blackhawks come apart? This one only drives in one direction and there is no resistance in the dial so I suspect something is busted inside.

I've never attempted to dismantle one of these before so I figured that I should ask before potentially destroying this ratchet.

Thats the remains of a rare no. 10 set which was the largest blackhawk set available at that time. You are missing the top tray, but you have alot of the sockets with a nice label.

You have to drill out the rivet in the center of the selector. I have not had to take one apart but it sounds like the eccentric under the selector is broken.

I was afraid that the solution required surgery of that type. This begs the question of how the rivet is replaced if the ratchet can be repaired.

I guess this may just be a display item of a 1943 1/4 inch drive Blackhawk ratchet. Ah well. Ya can't win 'em all.

Picked up this Black Hawk Breaker Bar at an estate sale. It's 7/16 drive. The detent ball is a little wonky but still FULLY functional. Figured somebody here or a collector on another forum may want it. Please send me a PM if you're interested in it.

I know I am but what is it...
Blackhawk 3/8" ratchet, part number 34995, shows up nowhere but close to 1940's series tools. Date mark is "76". Also, PAT PEND. Unable to post pics because I don't participate much here due to extreme social distancing practices.

Measures 7" long, head/helmet diameter is 7/8" and head/helmet height is 1 3/8". Reversible with a 180 degree twist of head. 16 tooth with action on drive piece at all angles between perpendicular and 5-10 degrees of straight up. Looks like a roman soldier or Star Wars helmet head. Any ideas?

I know pics would make it easier but that will come very soon, I'm not going to make two half *** posts just to get privileges. I've searched every which way and I'm either missing a keyword or this is really an odd ratchet.

Complete markings are ....BLACKHAWK 34995 on handle and 180 degrees on handle ..MADE IN U.S.A. PAT PEND 76. The "D" in PEND is much lighter than the rest of the characters.

Same era I believe but picture the drive square traveling from a typical position at right angle to handle to a position straight out the top of the head - inline with handle. No detents between the two points but some friction against the ratchet mechanism "ball" so there seems to be some ability to vary the angle of attack.

The second main difference is to change direction forward/reverse, you turn the entire head 180 degrees. By feel it seems best to do this when the drive square is straight up vertical, less drag on movement. I think that's when the drive mechanism is unloaded - the drive square doesn't turn when placed in this position.

I found this drain plug wrench yesterday. I think it was made in 1952 and I am guessing the finish is cad plated. It's nice that no one grabbed the adjuster with pliers, or hit the handle with a hammer. It looks like it's barely been used. That will continue to be the case around here, I suppose. Cool tool though.

It would have been produced after the New Britain takeover in 1954 or 55. Here's a pic of a New Britain model.
