Thanks for the info and scans. The vise seems somewhat rare and it’s always nice to have some background on it. I’ve yet to see an ad for the vise to see who it was possibly marketed to but by lineman I assume you mean telegraph.

This pic was posted by chrisnazzy on another thread. I thought it might serve as a measuring point when judging the quality of new vises. Is this the absolute lowest point?

Warning! Don’t enlarge the thumbnail. It looks even worse when the pic is bigger. :)

I think PghJKB might have cracked the case wide open. I found this in an old Manning Maxwell catalog.31a749e862d24e90aa6bc2dd5fc1340e.jpg

I'd suggest a couple things.

1.) Take it apart and look for metal chips on the inside of the main housing. The one I had was full of metal chips.

2.) Get rid of the o ring bumpers and put on actual bumpers out of rubber sheet. Tip, the ends are threaded on the handle. Those little o rings aren't enough to cushion the blow of that large of a handle.

Good advice on the chip inspection. It came with a TON of grease on the dynamic slide. Will probably clean and regrease appropriately.

I hadn't noticed any issue with the o rings. The handle isn't so loose that it slides without slight friction. I imaging that may change as it wears in and necessitate stronger stops. For now the o rings are more than sufficient.

Zeug, I have the same vise.---About 220lbs..---A real workhorse.---Yours looks like NOS.---Did it cost you an arm or a leg?

Yup, NOS sitting in a warehouse. Scuffs on the top edge is all I can see. Wilton 800S owners would say I got a good deal. My wife would say I got ripped off!

Are you sure those O rings are stock?
I have a 400 model that has original rubbers and they are WAY thicker than those o rings on your 800.

This has been my project for the last three days while we all continue to be couped up at home. I bought this No. 60 at a yard sale last year. This guy always has nice stuff for sale. I set it next to my 4" for a size photo. Makes the 9400 look like a baby.

Speaking of sizes, here is 4 generations of 4" Wilton's. The 1st generation is missing and smaller yet.

Almost finished my first vise restoration in Pontiac Blue Metallic, an engine colour used on Pontiac GTOs and the like in the 60's. Any advice on cleaning up the screw handle? It is pretty rough...

You don’t see the #60 Wilton very often, I have one and it’s one of my favorite Wilton’s.
KMS
It’s interesting to see how much Wilton’s have grown over the ears.
Loydski
I don’t blame you for going out and getting some air and finding vise at the same time. The vise looks like it’s in great condition.

Starting to clean that 103R more in depth, is this typical of the lead screw, or should I try and add some weld in here? 7f225cf94279779c078704a0d87f589b.jpg

When I do one, I run it through the cabinet blaster with glass bead, then finish it off with 240 grit cloth.

Working on a baby bullet.

The horseshoe screws and swivel base nuts are brass.

This one is stamped 5-47.

Are the brass parts original?

Thanks

Yeah, I went top corner and popped the water bottle on the poor guy. I couldn’t resist. He did do a great job on the vise, I can just picture it on the back bumper of the Zamboni.

Nice Clamp-On Dave.

Dave
Nice find, that’s big for a clamp on.

Thanks Kevin and Smitty.
I know va.grouseman has one, and searching I found about 2 or 3 others. Not very common.

Also interesting, at some point they changed to 3.5" jaws but kept the same number. This version weighs 14 lbs. Fierljeppen was even kind enough to share an ad for one of these vises branded Luther. Very interesting.

I also tried looking but i can't find a patent. The way the swivel base works is kind of neat and i would think there would be one.

One of my new favorites.

While one of the smaller tool companies, the Goodell-Pratt Company made some of the best tools available at the time. Their vises were no exception. The 1 inch no.160 is the smallest that they made, but as you can see from the pictures, it is quite well made. It weighs in at a surprising 1 pound 6 ozs.

This is the first vise I’ve seen with the manufacturer's name stamped on a guide rod.

Here is the "big brother" to the one in the above post. This 2 inch no. 161 weighs in at 3 pounds 7 ozs. While G-P also made bench vises, these were the only table clamp vises available.
After G-P's acquisition by Millers Falls, these two vises were incorporated into the M F offerings.
