First picture looks great. I would bet that was a rain wraped twister. It probably had just a little power behind it ,not quiet a F1, the stripes in the picture is probably it sucking in colder air which helped it not to gain more strength. Glad you were a few miles from it. That looks like just about what I had forming above me, probably the same system since we aren't that far from each other.

i spent the 61-62 school year in emporia and we would watch the twisters drop out the go up then come down and land nw of us. then we would go in and listen to the radio until they told us where they hit. fascinating to watch.

jim

Jim,
Nothing like seeing something like that, unless there was something bigger and closer coming your way. I was in the shop when I received 3 phone calls and a few texts saying to get in the house because there was a tornado coming my way from the SW, I stepped out looked that way and could see sunny skies. I don't usually get worked up over bad weather unless there actually is a known tornado.

That is crazy, I didn't even think about that and couldn't really even see it, of course I was driving on a slick gravel/mud road at the time too. That was probably on the Ks./Ok. line or about 4 miles north of my place.

P.S. The new coilovers aren't working so I have some more work to do. :headscrat:beer:

Two things to report, the other coil over is due to arrive today, and my next BIG project will be unloaded tonight too. It is a couple feet longer than my truck, heavier, and also black, and it will do this :3gears:

Can you guess what it is?

Sorry for the delay everyone, it took longer pick it up than I'd expected. Well here it is:
View media item 60643
It is bigger than my truck because it is a long bed ~7,500 lbs (3,400 kg) I'll post more pictures when I get into it, but it is a 2006 Chevy Silverado 3500, 6.6L Duramax engine 6 speed Alison transmission, crew cab, single rear wheel 4x4. It does have 260,000 miles (416,000 km) on it but it runs like a top, starts right up and just goes. It needs some major cleaning and quite a few parts replaced but nothing I can't handle. The best part of it was that it only cost $3,000. I'm still debating on fixing it and selling it or selling my 2500 and using that money to fix the new one a little nicer.

Taumac,
I'm sure a beer or two helped you with the waiting. :)

Herb,
Yes I'll be home this weekend.

1/2,
Thanks for the visit and hopefully you weren't dissapointed.

it almost looks like your other truck. Did you have any problems getting it home?
How are the mud roads on the way to your house? I might try and shoot for Saturday, early afternoon. I have the paint bought, and need to bring the manual on the car. Well let you know if something else comes up.

It is the same basic truck as my old one, the front sheet metal changed from 02-03, and the engine in this '06 is the LBZ version of the 6.6L Duramax with 360 hp and 650 ft-lb of torque. Really all in all the same truck though, and they even match. I forgot to mention but I'm calling this one Black Plague 2.0, because Evil Twin was already taken by Jeff Lutz.

Herb,
No problems getting home, just a slog with that much weight on my truck, the roads were mostly dry this morning before it rained again. I should be home so come on by. I'm resisting the urge to do anything to the truck until I at least can't do anything more on your car until parts arrive.

JB $ 3000, what a great score.

Just out of interest you should check out what some thing like yours would bring in this neck of the woods.:scared:

1/2,
For that price I'll ship it over and hand deliver it along with a Yeti cooler filled with a variaty pack of the "best" american beers around. :scared: Is the correct response. I was thrilled to find it, everyone that knows diesels around here had told me the same.

Nice truck(s) JB, would love to see some more pics when you get her sorted. What sort of MPG do you expect from that size diesel ?

The 5th wheel hauler looks pretty sweet too.

Cheers GB.

Grumblebum,
I'll post lots of before pictures because I just can't believe how nasty it is now. It'll take lots of work, but the only thing I'll do for the next few weeks is clean it up, I really need to work on Bugthug's car and get it back on the road.

Long answer to a simple question, I know all this because I track every tank in all of my vehicles and keep this info on a spreadsheet. Black Plague the 3/4 ton has averaged 17.00522 over the last 7,000 miles that I've owned it. This trip with the unloaded trailer for 200 miles, and loaded to when I filled up I averaged 12.9503 mpg which I was surprised and pleased with. With normal size tires and not lifted they are closer to 18-19 mpg on the highway, if I had a manual a friend of mine regularly sees 20-22 on the highway. My last truck the red one (Clifford) averaged 16.01529 over the 51,805 miles I owned it and it was much lighter, and had a 5.3L gas engine. Crazy that a diesel that weighs 1,500-2,000 lbs (680-907 kg) more and has 1.3L more displacement gets better mileage.

I really liked the 5th wheel (goose neck) trailer too, I borrowed it from a friend at work, it was rated at 14,000 pounds (6350 kg). :shocking:

Now it makes sense. Nice score on the new rig. [emoji482]

Yeah I knew that would throw some people off somewhat. :) I don't know that I can get a much bigger truck without venturing into commercial or military rigs, and I don't like duelly trucks.

Good score , nice truck. How long have you had your current truck? You probably know what you've got with it, the new one could be full of surprises. Please don't ask me how I know.

I've had Black Plague 1.0 for about 7 months now, I had to put a ton of time and a good chunk of change into fixing all of the little things in the drivetrain but it is in great shape now and because I've replaced everything that usually wears on these after about 100,000 miles (~160,000 kms) I should have plenty of usable life in it still.

I'm a bit worried about opening a new can of worms but at the same time I basically know what I have ahead of me worst case so I'm not too worried about it. (Famous last words.) I have listed B.P. 1.0 for sale, and will let ya'll know how that goes. If I don't get my bottom dollar I'll just list B.P. 2.0 and try to make some money off of that one.

I have just been cleaning the truck up to get it to a usable state in case B.P. 1.0 moves quickly and I'll post some of that later today. Dirty-used-up-**** might have been a better name than B.P. 2.0. :lol_hitti

They are very functional and just pure truck with a little bit of luxury to help out. I have a very short list of luxuries I want in a vehicle and they are AC, cruise, power windows, and keyless entry is a nice bonus but none of my vehicles currently have that. That is about it, nothing I really want or need other than that, the rest just cost more money to fix when it inevitably breaks. These just seem like pure trucks that can handle anything I will be throwing at them.

I gave B.P. 2.0 a good washing this weekend and cleaned on the interior a little. I knew it had a lot of mud under it but wow. I couldn't even see most of the trans because of all the mud packed around it. I pulled the skid plates off to better wash behind them and oh my! Here are the pictures of the mess.

Drivers side isn't that dirty:
View media item 60754I've removed the duct tape and the decal under it, hair dryer, PB Blaster, and lots of finger nail scraping and it is all gone, but sadly no pictures of it at this time.

I also pulled the cobra out to wash it up and it turned out great, but I still have a rubbing sound I can't determine where it is coming from. I'm running out of time to get it sorted and the next 15 days have at least a 20% chance of rain.

That is all for now, I have to get back to work, and there is plenty to do on this thing.

Wow JB, that's one unloved truck. How did it even run with that **** in the air filter?

Looks like you need to completely strip the inside to clean and fix it up again.

Are door skins and sills available for it ?

It will be a cool truck again one you do your magic I'm sure.

PS> remember to watch that back.

Cheers GB.

yo! that is dirty. you should be able to find all the interior parts on fleabay, i know i have bought a number of door switches there. also, black is so common i bet you should be able to find a replacement fender in black also. good score, just hope most of that dust was on the outside of the air filter.

GB,
The air filter wasn't as bad as you would expect, and before I blew/beat all of that out I blew my own hot air at the filter and it went on to the other side without any noticeable resistance, but it will be replaced either way.

I'm pulling the interior to try to clean it out more thoroughly, but I had some issues I'll get into later once they are solved. I can find all the interior pieces either used on Ebay or places like craigslist which I have found a steering wheel and mirror already.

I'm taking it easy on the back and wearing a brace anytime I do anything including sleeping. It is getting much better, but isn't perfect yet.

Jim,
The air filter is different than most out there, I'll snap a picture and show you what I mean. So far so good on the parts, but I have to fix the door before I try to replace the fender.

Herb,
I sent in for one already and am patiently waiting. I don't think this truck will receive enough attention (read that as money) to ever make it pretty again, but at least I hope it won't look deserted.

Thank you all for taking a look as my many random projects that show up, have a good one.

Oh my am I an imbecile sometimes, I spent about an hour and a half trying to get a nut off of the bottom of the floor pan to remove the passenger seat. I couldn't turn it by hand so I put the impact to work, after a minute or so the socket started to turn, then make bad noises. Looked at the nut and it was now round. I tried grinding the nut off to use a punch to turn it with no luck. I ended up cutting the entire thing off and removed the seat only to discover it was a bolt on the seat frame not a stud. :dunno:

The reasoning is the nut didn't look welded on and I couldn't get access to the bolt head because the seat didn't slide all the way forward because some junk was caught in the track. Well **** lesson learned and I pulled the drivers seat out in 5 minutes. Now to work on fixing my mistake. Dang it.

Okay confession time, I have a friend at work that really wants my old truck and is willing to pay a good price for it. Soooo I'm selling it to him once he sells his truck which means I now have to get B.P. 2.0 in usable shape in order to have a truck again. I won't fix everything at first but do need to get it to a usable condition or I'll be stuck without a truck. At least I have a few other vehicles I can drive in the mean time. :)

Outlaw,
I'm not too worried about pushing it too hard, I'll work on it like most projects just when I have the time early in the mornings, or after work before the family gets home. However, I have been going back to the gym in the mornings before work to help strengthen the back and the rest of the body so I haven't been getting mornings recently. :(

When I picked up B.P. 2.0 the HVAC didn't work, or more specifically the blower fan didn't spin. I removed the fan and resistor pack (Common failure on these trucks) and found this in the wiring harness to the fan resistors:
View media item 61014
That is what controls the speed of the fan and the ground had overheated and melted the casing causing a short. I tested the fan, and it was fine. I bought the replacement resistor and put it in and the HVAC would now blow nice cold AC which is very important this time of year. However it was blowing out of the defrost, face, and foot vents all at once no matter which position the control was in. I determined the vent door actuator was bad and needed replacing. I had a few other parts that would have been several hundred dollars to replace if bought new but I could pick up second hand for peanuts if I could find them.

There was a guy parting out his wrecked truck so I wend there to see what I could find. I ended up leaving with some door lock toggles, steering wheel, the actuator for the HVAC vent door, tail lights, and some other misc. parts for $75. Not bad, but the deals were just beginning. I headed out to Tulsa to two of their Pull-A-Part type places where you pay $2 and wander around the yard of cars and pull whatever parts you want and pay at the exit gate. I ended up finding two door seals that I needed, two door sills, a door panel, some door lights, misc. hardware and a few other odds and end for a grand total of $38, woo hoo! Now it was time to work!

I pulled the rest of the interior out of the truck, this is what the carpet looked like after getting the big loose stuff off while in the truck:
View media item 61015
After a good round of vacuuming:
View media item 61016
Then after washing it down on the girls swing set and letting it dry out:
View media item 61017
Not perfect, but much better, if I really wanted to make it nicer I could have used some degreaser on the spots that wouldn't come up, but I was running out of umpto's and had to get everything back in before the cat and dogs decided to sleep on them. Some assembly was required:
View media item 61018
All put back in and waiting on the final cleaning to happen, but that was it for the day:

I had plenty of time to work Monday as I was off of work, my wife was working and our girls are visiting my parents for the week. I decided to tackle removing the front suspension, It all came off pretty easy other than two/three things that are all right there together:
View media item 61021
First was the axle nut, the best thing to do is break this loose before pulling the tire and wheel, but I always forget until I have to take it off of the jack stands and redo some work. It is a 36mm nut (~1-7/16"), good news is I had a 36mm 6pt. 1/2" drive sockets, I put it on my 20v impact and the drivers side came right off no problems. Passenger side was another story, it didn't make a dent so I put my 3/4" drive breaker bar and a "little" cheater on it, that broke the 3/4" to 1/2" adapter, I then proceeded to break the 1/2" drive breaker bar:
View media item 61020
Here is my little cheater bar:
View media item 61023It is ~6ft long or 2m, yep that'll do it just fine.

Next I decided to use the 12 pt 1-7/16" 3/4" drive socket after letting the threads soak for a few hours while I did some other stuff on the drivers side. This socket was a little looser so I was careful not to let it slip, and success!

Now I can't get the brake disc off, DOH! I beat it a bit but still no luck, I don't use PB Blaster around the brakes for fear it will become impregnated in the rotors. The rotors have two holes as seen above in the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position, I grabbed some metric hardware and tried to determine the thread size and.... none of them fit. :dunno: It ended up being SAE threads 5/16"-18 threads I believe, tightened each one a 1/4 turn at a time and off it comes:
View media item 61022
Next/last was the upper control arm bolts on the passenger side, one came right out, the other was the ! I could pull the nut off easy enough, but the bolt wouldn't come out of the bushing sleeve. No amount of persuation would release it and I couldn't use heat because of other stuff in the area I didn't want to ruin. Out comes the reciprocating saw to cut the control arm off so I could access the bolt better. I then turned the saw loose on the bolt only to flatten the teeth in a matter of seconds. :willy_nil So then came the angle grinder with a cut off wheel and after 20-30 minutes and burning some hair off of my head it was all removed:
View media item 61024View media item 61025
I never could remove the torsion bar from the lower control arm so I will work with those in place, here it is after cleaning the dirt off of the floor:
View media item 61027
Speaking of dirt, this is all that fell off while working, I swept 5-6 times while I was working under there:
View media item 61026
I have already ordered all of the steering components that I'll be replacing, inner and outer tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm, idler arm thingy (Technical name), assembled upper control arms, lower control arm bushings and ball joints, steering stabilizer/damper, brake booster (It had a leaking seal which is what caused the drivers side floor to look so bad.), and brake pads. I'm sure I forgot something but that is all for now, I should be able to get a lot done this week after work. In other news I have two interested buyers on my truck, I'll let you know how that goes as I would welcome the extra cash influx compared to the purging I've experienced recently.

a lot of room inside the cab with the seats removed. Looks like you got a lot done over the weekend.
I think all I did was mow the farm, the grass should of been bailed for hay it was so tall since all the rain.
I'm still getting my part list together, got the credit card on ice. I'm sure it will be smoking soon:dunno:

I know my C.C. has been smoking hot the past couple weeks/months with the cobra upgrades and the new truck now. Ouch that will leave a mark. I mowed this weekend too, it wasn't too bad but I've gotten lucky and have been able to mow every weekend so far that it needed it otherwise I'd be way behind and need to dig that sickle mower out and put it to use. I shouldn't have too much more to go once this last round of parts shows up. (Famous last words I know) I'll get on the hearse asap! (If I keep telling myself I'll have to do it right?)

In other news I have an alignment scheduled for Friday when there was a 0% chance of rain, now there is a 20% chance, Ugh. It has to be done before I leave on the power tour on June 10th though so if I get wet I get wet.

If anyone wants to come join in here is the projected route:
2016 Hot Rod Power Tour Route If you want to join in or meet up send me a PM early as I may not check here from my phone that much during the trip. I'm doing the entire thing, in total I should have about 2,800 miles of driving but most likely more.

Sounds like the new truck is giving you some headache. You'll get through it. There's enough dirt there to get your pail and shovel and have your own beach inside. LOL

Wow, you definitely don't cut corners on a deep clean of the interior! Quite a difference. Good luck with the alignment and safe travels out on power tour. Any concern about your back holding up with that much windshield time?

Not really any headache really, just new challenges I get to learn from. I don't think I have even cussed at this truck, yet.... I really enjoy working on things and it sometimes works out to where I make a dollar or two off of projects like this, or end up with a nicer vehicle in the end. I replaced the rear brakes yesterday after work and removed the running boards, or as a female friend from high school used to say about them, "You don't need any of those pu...(female anatomy) running boards." I have just always removed them since then.

I haven't gotten it as clean as I want to, there is a ton of dust everywhere that is slowly getting cleaned up. I'm not too concerned about the alignment, the shop that is doing it specalizes in older suspensions so it is in good hands. I'm a little concerned and plan to put a pillow behind my back for most of the trip to help out. The back is feeling much better and is nearly back to normal, we will see if I say the same thing when I get done with that trip though.

Update:
I have everything off of the truck waiting for the last of the suspension parts to arrive, all of the front parts are due in today, the parts for the rear are due later this week. It is getting there slowly, but trying to save money by ordering stuff online is making it take a bit longer. Quick note on the lower ball joints, I rented one of those ball joint tools from a parts store as I've done in the past. It didn't do anything, I mean nothing at all, it wouldn't budge them even with close to 500 ft lbs on it. I had them soaking in PB Blaster for an hour or so and even tried heating them while under pressure and still nothing. I finely decided to just try beating them with a small sledge and bam they started moving after about 20 blows. I have them out now and am waiting on the new parts. :)

On the cobra front, I took it in to have the alignment done on Friday and that went without a hitch other than the battery was DEAD! I jumped it and put a spare battery in the trunk from the yellow car. Made it in just fine but was dead when I left the gym. Jumped it again and it started fine after that. I took it to the parts store to have them test the battery/alternator and the machine said the alternator was bad, great at least I found out about it now rather than half way to New Orleans on Friday.

There was a cruise night in Ponca City they call Draggin Grand I drove around in that for a few hours after I had the parts store charge the battery and everything was fine until I started puking coolant everywhere on my 4-5 round (I forgot to turn the electric fan back on, doh!). Let it cool down and went to get some water to fill it with. I ended up adding almost a gallon and all was well. Removed the alternator Saturday morning, took it in for a lifetime warranty replacement, it failed the first test but passed the second test but they replaced it anyway. I don't think I'll have a chance to drive it again before the trip so I'm crossing my fingers.

In other news my wife just got a new job that is back in her degree field, she will be managing a hotel in town. Better hours, 3 bonuses a year, and a little more pay, woo hoo! That was the highlight of my weekend until we picked our girls up from my parents on Sunday. All in all a great weekend and I'm excited to get to leave on Friday for a nice long drive.

I was thinking about catching the Power Tour from Wichita up to KC, not sure if I'm going to make it or not though. If I do, I'll be in a white 1991 Z28 with fire red interior, LS swapped of course.

Outlaw,
If you think you will make it let me know, or if you have a shop near the route I'd love to check it out. PM me and I'll shoot you my phone number.

All,
I forgot to mention I met a fellow GJ member at Draggin Grand on Friday night, Crzydmnd72, I'm terrible with names so I can't remember what his real name is, but it was nice to talk to him for a bit while my car cooled down.

Good news, I sold Black Plague 1.0 last night, I was slightly sad to see it go but I have a nice little wad a cash to toss at B.P. 2.0. I will also have enough left over most likely to buy a lift.

Wait what was that, yes I AM GETTING A LIFT. I have a friend from college who is an engineer for a lift company so most likely I'll be buying it from him. All I know now is it will be a 2 post and able to lift B.P. 2.0 high enough to work on. Good news for Bugthug his hearse is right where I want to put it so it'll have to be finished before I can install the lift.
Feeling excited,
JB
