When I saw the size of the beams I figured it was a frame table, not to mention the length you described. Very cool! I'll have to look into the chop saw.
Looking forward to your review of the Evo saw. I want one just haven't pull the trigger.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Good call Outlaw, it is shaping up now, the frame table will be 38.75" (1m) wide and 16' (4.88m) long. The width will be just narrower than the C4 inside track width and similar to the '57 frame. The Evo saw works great, I was extremely impressed with the cut speed and cut quality, I made 10 cuts on the beams total and 6 cuts on the box tube and it never missed a beat. It does make one heck of a mess though! :scared:

Do you have any kind of Ac in the hidey hole or is it just smoking hot in there.?

No sir, it is just burning hot, I drip a lot of sweat in there. If I'm working in one spot I'll turn the fan on me but working in the middle of the day is pretty tough this time of year.

that sounds like a lot of money for a 4 door? be interesting none the less.

I have thought that too Herb, if I plan to sell it then I wouldn't have started with a 4 door, but a 2 door would have cost quite a bit more to start with so maybe it'll even out. Good news is the suspension is way cheaper doing it this way than if I'd have tried to repair the stock stuff and upgraded to disc brakes.

I just watched a video by Hand Tool Rescue where he restored a forge like that. Pretty cool stuff.

I'll have to check it out War Wagon, that looks interesting.

How did I miss this thread before? Will be looking forward to updates on the shop, tools, and projects!

I don't know, I've been here a while, just come on back anytime you feel like it but things will be slow over the next couple months.

Probably not but the hose of that warthog should would keep sticky fingered people at bay. lol

I have thought it would be cool to take a motion following camera , just the motion outputs sent through relays to larger stepper motors and have it control a machine gun looking contraption that didn't actually shoot. Or MAYBE hook it up to propane so it had a good pop and flash. :D

Some updates to come,

I managed to get a little work done on the frame table this weekend but sadly only took one photo for some reason. I have all of the beams cut to length and the legs cut as well. I'm working on the beam fit-up now, the strongest way I could come up with to join them was to do this:

View media item 73795Not too bad of a fit up I don't think, but they definitely need cleaned before I weld it all up.

As of now I have two of the four cross members fit and I'm pleasantly surprised how straight they are, less than 1/8" (3 mm) gap along the 16' (4.88 m) length.

I also managed to find a Corvette suspension, the problem is it looks like a Corvette LOL:
View media item 73796
The deal wasn't bad, $1,000 for what was left of the car, no engine or trans but I should easily be able to part out most of what is left to come close to breaking even. It came with C5 Corvette wheels that are in surprisingly good shape. If I use them I'll need to do at least a mini tub in the back of the '57. Outside track width is spot on with the '57 so it will hopefully go pretty smooth. Famous last words. The one kinds bad thing about the donor is the rear gear ratio, it is 2.59:1 So with the tires and trans I'll run I'll be doing 65 at 1,500 rpm and it will NOT feel fast, but gas mileage should be great with the little LS engine. I'm really getting excited to get going on the project if you can't tell. :bounce:

maybe you can cut the back two spare doors off. now that would be cool, but harder to hold the family.
That vette looks like the one from Ark city, I was thinking I seen one advertised for that?

Herb,
It would be neat to do a little chop top and maybe even remove the post and make the back doors suicide doors. Hmmm.... It would be hard to fit the family in if it were a two door or a shortened 2 door.

I found it in Stillwater, too bad I missed the one in Ark City, that would have been much closer. Oh well maybe next time. :)

While I'm never against cleaning up before welding, you'll find 6011 run hot will burn right through that surface rust and give you a good weld. far different that flux core.

Great find on the Corvette. Can you accommodate the greater weight of the 57 on the suspension? The gear ratio will be great for road trips. Might even go with a Powerglide :)

JB, with 2.59 gears and a 28" tire, you could get away without running an overdrive ******. Food for thought. The C4 setup should be awesome. The tri-five four doors still carry the same beautiful lines, and there is nothing wrong with a "crew cab" hot rod. I would totally drive a 57 4-door daily.

What is your planned wheel/tire combo?

Man moons ago I got a call for a scrap Corvette. I brought it home for $100. He just wanted it out of his shop. The interior was missing and it had two holes cut in the rear deck lid. Other than that it was complete. I sold it two days later for $700 to a guy who just wanted the frame. He was up in the rust belt and his was rotted.

JB, Sounds like things will get exciting with the 57. Will be glad to follow along. Good news on the new job assignment but sounds like it will keep you busy.

Glad the trip to help your brother is working out so that someone can go with you and it sounds great for your mother to go. I'm sure it is good for her to see your brother again.
Be safe

An Evolution Rage2 metal chop saw, I've seen some good reviews about this online from owners not just people paid to review tools. Once again it'll come in handy for working on the table. Check out the teeth on the blade:
JB, I saw the saw and realized I don't have one. When I searched for it, Home Depot had it for $187.00 (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Evolutio...p-Saw-RAGE2/203633549?keyword=Evolution+Rage2). I don't know why they list it because there are none available in the stores within 100 miles and they aren't available online.

The saw's slow speed was what attracted me (1,450 rpm instead of 3,900 rpm like most abrasive chop saws). If HD doesn't get them back in stock, I may end up buying Northern Tool's Ironton version (http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200641810_200641810). Maybe a 20% coupon will show up in the mailbox.

My 1987 Corvette's registration is due for renewal next month. I think of it as my "new" Corvette but it's eligible for Antique plates this year. The C4 Corvettes are the red-headed step-children in the Corvette world but they really are pretty advanced. I can't imagine trying to buy all those forged aluminum suspension pieces for $1,000 and then have enough of a car left to part out for at least that much again.

I had seen the metal saws but never dreamed they would cut a 6" I-beam. More than once on the same blade. Thanks for the research, Bob!

Andy: I guess you don't realize how soft those I-beams are. If only you could have held them, say for 30 or so years you might. Maybe if you had helped him load them last week or something....:lol_hitti. Seriously though, that is some pretty good life out of a blade and I do know how good the old stuff is.

JB: I have an old furnace blower (date stamped 9/27/1957) that moves some serious air around my shop. The newer ones are designed a little differently, but I think you might be able to engineer a frame to hold one up. Too bad our paths won't cross on our respective holiday road trips because I have an extra one. Of course if it is November when you read this, too hot will not be your problem most likely. :willy_nil

Thank you for taking the time to share your different interesting projects! I have enjoyed your humor... I would have walled off the one corner and insulated it for Winter projects, but that is because i really dislike being COLD... love the more door family cruiser. and I am very jealous of the availability of CHEAP duramax's! I have a project of a 40 chevy cabover-crewcab-firetruck... that I plan on putting a duramax in....
THANKS

I can't begin to thank Andy enough on his recommendations and help with the stick welder, it has made a world of difference even though my welds are still a little bird poopy looking. Also Andy and I had a text conversation yesterday about the weight of the Corvette vs. the '57. It turns out to not really be an issue. The '86 Corvette has a weight of around 3,200 lbs. (1,450 kg) whereas the '57 is only around 3,400 lbs (1,540 kg). I'll mock the 'vette suspension mount points on the '57 frame in a way that I'll lower the '57 slightly, if the weight becomes an issue I can swap out the mono-leaf for a stiffer version from the '83 z51 suspension (I hope I'm remembering that right.) or I could always go aftermarket with coil-overs or airbags.

LOL! Thank You!

Thanks CH,
I'll add that to my Christmas wish list, it would be a great addition. :pimpflash

I hadn't really thought about not running OD in the '57 (I just thought of a great name for it, and any of you with daughters will probably recognize it, Pinky Pie.) I will probably eventually swap out gears to some in the mid 3 range. I could put in factory G44 gears into the Dana 36 to get to 3.07:1 or I think as high as 3.73:1 with aftermarket gears. If the 2.59:1's are too high (low? I can never remember which I'm supposed to say.) with OD I can always lock it out of OD with the 4L60E right?

That is a great score, I may just have to try to sell the frame on a Michigan CL add, great advise!

They really are, too bad the job is keeping me away from the shop more. I had to come in for a few things today so I figured I'd do an update real quick. I know I'm much more excited to get to have someone tag along. I may also have another passenger for the trip as well, we will see if that works out, it will be interesting for sure.

More to come,

Need to see some pictures of your saw results. I may have to have one of those.

Looking forward to seeing some action on the Chevy!

I'll post some photos of the cuts in my update in my next reply here, but sadly didn't take any of the actual beam. I will say it cuts amazingly well, I used it for some small cuts on the 3/16" (4.76 mm) plate this morning and it was like a warm knife through butter.

JB, I saw the saw and realized I don't have one. When I searched for it, Home Depot had it for $187.00 (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Evolutio...p-Saw-RAGE2/203633549?keyword=Evolution+Rage2). Bob,
Now if you can get one for that price ****** it up, they don't have them around here either, and I paid similar to the one from N.T.

The C4 doesn't have the panache of the C2 for certain, but you are correct, they are very advanced with a great following for those who love them. Sadly I doubt this Corvette will ever drive again, but if all goes well it will be used to get a few other cars back on the road. There is plenty of pride to be had being an organ donor and saving a few lives.

I do not want to have a junkyard at home...but I would love to have one somewhere else. :) With all that I've cut the blade still doesn't show signs of slowing down, I don't know how I was able to get along without one this long.

Andy: I guess you don't realize how soft those I-beams are. If only you could have held them, say for 30 or so years you might. Coomer,
Luckily it has been a very mild summer for us here and doing most of my work early in the morning I don't get too hot, but do leak a little sweat from time to time. Thank you for the offer and I did in fact get to read it before November.

Thank you for taking the time to share your different interesting projects! I have enjoyed your humor... Borgy,
First of all thank you for reading along and commenting, it amazes me people will still read through so much of my rambling. I think Pinky Pie will be a good family cruiser if I can ever get her done, I just hope my wife and girls will enjoy riding in it too. I'm not a fan of cold but there really isn't anything I can reasonably do about it other than build a fire in the stove and warm up when I need to. Please post up a photo of the '40, I'd love to see what it looks like. If you want the engine and trans I pulled come on out and pick it up, I'll make you a screaming deal. I'm out of space and need some room quick.

So I left off last talking about the fit-up of the cross braces with the main rails, I finely finished them, I only went through 7 cutoff discs and one grinder. I actually had 3 120v grinders a few months ago and all 3 have now died so I had to buy another. The Dewalt 20v grinder still works but is not really good for heavy use 2' away from an outlet. All squared up and ready to weld:
View media item 74017
I cleaned all of the welded area either in the blast cabinet or with a twisted cup wire wheel, tacked it with flux core in my wire feed welder then switched to the Lincoln on loan from Andy using 3/32" 6011 rod. Here you can see the flux core to the left and the rod on the right. I wasn't weaving like I should have and will fix that soon:
View media item 74018
You can get an idea about how bad some of these are pitted, but still very stout. With everything welded I could get to before flipping the table over I decided to make the legs and drill the mounting points where they bolt on. Out with the 3/16" plate:
View media item 74019
After about an hour with the grinder and cutoff wheel I had 1 strip 3" (76 mm) wide and 1 2-5/8" (68 mm) wide. I used the mag drill to cut 7/16" holes in one piece before cutting it out. This will be welded to the top of the leg before it is bolted to the table. I then used the chop saw to make the other 5 tops and 12 bottom pieces:
View media item 74020
In this photo you can see some of what the cuts look like from the chop saw but I'll get better ones to post soon. This is my idea for the bottom of the legs, probably overkill but I don't want to have to worry about anything going wrong in an area I'll never be able to access again:
View media item 74021
My plan is to drill 5/8" (16 mm) holes in both of the bottom plates, then weld the nut and washer (washer really not needed but I bought them so I'm using them) to the small plate, weld it into the leg, then weld the larger plate to cap it off. I'll have a sacrificial bolt installed the whole time to keep from damaging the threads on the captive nut. I'm using 5/8" x 18 (Fine thread) hardware, it has a little more strength, also probably not needed, and finer adjustment than a course thread bolt (5/8" x 11) would have. That is about all I've been able to get done, lots of time fitting up and checking and rechecking square. I'm excited with the progress and can't wait to see what happens next.

whats keeping you away from the shop for 2 months?

Herb,
I'm working an outage at work, currently scheduled for Sept. 17th to late Oct., but the role I have will require me to work a lot of extra hours a few weeks before and maybe one or two after. Luckily I'll get lots of overtime pay...oh wait never-mind I'm salary so no I won't. :dunno: I'll try to check in on my thread from time to time but don't expect much.

No 1983 production Corvette...so must be a later date. I have pictures of the only test mule 1983 Corvette left in existence. White on blue, in the national Corvette museum in Bowling Green.

I knew that Outlaw, and must have fat fingered it, is this the one you have a photo of? The Missing 1983 Corvette You can always thank California for making history with their emissions standards. Actually you could argue that if it were not for California and the EPA we wouldn't be where we are now. They forced the automakers to dig a little deeper into the gray matter to make efficient engines, such as from the base 165hp '75 Corvette to the 455hp now. I am just glad they don't emissions check vehicles in Oklahoma, no reason, just glad.

thanks, in my case right now I am too sick to do much. and reading your posts and others, lets me live vicariously through your adventures, and inspires me to get out and work on my junk! plus I seem to spend less on ebay,, except I am buying more storage stuff!!;)
I forgot to mention that a cobra is one of my favorite cars! I owned a real 427 SC for about 2 weeks in 1974...... a real shelby backup car with history at riverside and sebring! I became a electrician apprentice at 19. when I got my first tax return. I was RICH! a friend in the bakersfield sports car club, had it and the motor was out... and he would let me make PAYMENTS! Well my Dad, girlfriend and tax lady SHAMED ME INTO BUYING A HOUSE because it was a better investment,, INSTEAD...sold the house ten years later and made 30K......... that year THAT same car sold for 1 MILLION..........:lol_hitti

here are some photos of my firetruck as it arrived from south carolina. we narrowed a 1980 chevy 1 ton front suspension and added air bags that are too small... then was talked into fixing my 55 ford because it needed less work.... I would love to take that motor and trans off your hands, but my health is not good enough yet. I am so much better that last year! last year at this time my kids were deciding who got what!:scared:
i hope the photos loaded??

JB good progress going on over here, the place is looking very green now.

Is Bob coming for a visit to help lift that new table ?

Borgy, that is a cool truck, hope you get back on your feet to start up a thread on it a some point.

Cheers GB

JB - you are keeping busy as always. The lot is looking terrific. I still can't fathom how much you can get accomplished. It would take me four times as long to do what you do. (and I'd have no clue how to do most of it).

Since I see you as the Duramax Whisperer, I wanted to run something by you. My dad has a 2006 Silverado 2500HD LT - Duramax. 210,000km on it. Quad cab, leather, pretty loaded. Fully operational.

Here is a pic when he imported it from the US in 2008.

He is looking to downsize and get out of the RV lifestyle. He is offering me the truck and the camper for $12,000 CAD. In other words, he is giving me a free truck and wants $12k for the camper.

I want to say yes because it is a free truck.... but it's two more things to store, two more things to maintain, two more things to insure etc.

Since you know a lot about that era Duramax, what do you think it's worth? What are the things that wear out? He has already done the brakes, power steering, brake booster, ball joints, rear axle seal.

I've never owned a diesel in my life, so I thought I'd come to the master. My poor Avalanche is just getting over-worked this summer. Last month alone I spent $1250 on gasoline.

Sorry for the derail....

In my neck of the woods, a clean/little to no rust, low mileage LLY/LBZ like that would go for $18,000 USD minimum, probably more if it's an LBZ because they're highly desired.

How do you know if it is an LBZ/LLY or other? What changes on the truck in those cases? I'll grab the VIN tonight, but all I really know is it is the Duramax/Allison combo and he has kept it bone stock. Old man driven....

I believe the 8th digit of the VIN should be a D if it's an LBZ in a 2006 otherwise if it's a 2 it's an LLY.

The yard is really looking sharp JB.

I like the Lincoln Tombstone welder, I learned to weld on one exactly like that when I was about 12 years old from my father. We had one on the farm and I wish I had it now if for nothing other than a conversation piece.

Anxious to see your welding table when done.

So I confirmed it is an LLY. However I've also learned that the 2006 LLY and the 2006 LBZ are the same physical truck. The only difference is a tune. The 2005 LLY had some issues they improved upon in 2006, but they didn't get the tune released until part way through the model year. It was at that point they altered the designation to LBZ.

But.... it looks like I scared JB away with all this Duramax talk. :dunno:

All,
Thanks for carrying on for me, and sorry I was away so long but am back now and survived. I'm working to reply to those who've commented, but won't be able to update for a few more days with photos. I hope everyone is doing well and I'm excited to catch up and get back into the swing of things.

thanks, in my case right now I am too sick to do much. and reading your posts and others, lets me live vicariously through your adventures, and inspires me to get out and work on my junk! plus I seem to spend less on ebay,, except I am buying more storage stuff!!;)

Borgy,
Your firetruck has some definite potential, and I really like it. I actually still have one of the truck but it still isn't running. :( I'm to the point where I'd basically give it away if someone came to pick it up. I'd be sick to my stomach to see the 427 SC I could have owned go for so much. :willy_nil Now heal up and get back to it so we can see that thing on the road.

JB good progress going on over here, the place is looking very green now.

Is Bob coming for a visit to help lift that new table ?

Borgy, that is a cool truck, hope you get back on your feet to start up a thread on it a some point.

Cheers GB

GB,
My how time flies, the grass was very green, but is now mostly dormant for winter, leaves are falling and the weather is crisp. No need for BOB to help with the frame table, it has casters and leveling feet so I should be able to push it around on my own.

JohnnieMo,
Sorry for such a late reply but others have hopefully covered it for you. You are correct, all 2006 model year duramax trucks were the LBZ but the early ones were not as powerful as the later ones. That is a screaming deal on that truck and I personally would jump on it let alone if it comes with a camper. At about the mileage (Kilometerage?) that truck is likely to need the injection pump and water pump replaced soon, and injectors before 300,000km. Another thing to consider is the transfer case pump rub kit, if not fixed it will wear a hole in the case and have to be replaced ($300 for the case half), plus other parts. Otherwise it is a very solid truck and will tow 15,000 lbs (7 metric tons) with ease. I'm sure you've already made a decision and I'll find out as soon as I make it to your thread to catch up.

Big B,
You are correct on that, it is getting tough to find them in good shape with that little use and when you do they are easily 18k or more in some cases.

Mike,
Thank you for the compliments on the yard, I need to start spraying it next year, well really two years ago, it has too many weeds for my liking. I enjoyed using the Lincoln, and have a few more small things to finish up on the frame table before it'll be time for the mig again on smaller stuff.

FYI, JB is off on a work assignment until November. I hope I got that right.

Finally,
Great memory on that one, I was starting to wonder myself what had happened. I have survived with my sanity intact, or at least that is what I keep telling myself.

Glad to have you back! I'm used to seeing the Warthog Hidey Hole on a daily basis. I'm in withdrawl now. Is it cold down there yet?

I did go forward with the Duramax and the camper. Drove it home on Canadian Thanksgiving. The truck has been very well maintained from a mechanical standpoint, but is a bit of a mess from an aesthetic standpoint. My dad wasn't afraid to bang it in to things, glue stuff to the dash, and I don't think wax or polish ever got too close to it. I know he has replaced a LOT of things on it including batteries, brakes, wheel bearings (twice), power steering, brake booster, 4x4 actuator and all fluids. In fact he spent about $1200 on all the fluids before he gave it to me.

I do know that the water pump and injectors have never been touched - nor have the shocks. I did come across the pump rub kit suggestion on the DuramaxForum so I'm looking in to that as well.

The truck can tow a lot, but I found it rather underwhelming trying to pass in the mountains. My supercharged Avalanche has much more get up and go. I think some tuning may be in my future. A lot of guys to EFI Live, but that may be more than I want.

As much as I have a desire to Johnnie-Mo-dify everything, I really have to take it easy with this one. I just don't have the funds to upgrade yet another vehicle.

My garage is DONE now, so I plan to start a new thread with some of my projects. I'll make sure you get the link ;) The truck is top of the list.

The water pump is not an expensive part but takes a lot to get to it, if you have to replace the injection pump do the water pump at the same time. I have the EFI Live tuning on my truck with a 5 position switch that when in tow mode will use the VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) as an engine brake which makes towing on long downhills much easier on the brakes. I think it was around $400 installed and in the top level will give the truck around 400 hp and 800 ft-lbs of torque. You are now on the edge of the rabbit hole, just tread lightly or next thing you know you'll be buying $1,700 head studs. For sure post a link here and I'll tag along.
