Was that the SSBC kit you put on the Mustang? How'd you like it? I did a Granada conversion on one of my 67's. Single piston though.

'86,
I had a nice long reply typed up only to look back at some old texts and sure enough it was an SSBC kit. It went together pretty well, there are great directions on the brakes part of it but the power booster and pedal had almost no instructions. The template for the holes needed for the booster was a joke, I drilled one of the holes by the temp. but was a full bolt diameter off. GRRR.

It does an incredible job of stopping the car now though, I would recommend it but plan to fiddle with the pedal installation for a long time. If I didn't have hands that were built like a 12 year old kid I couldn't have done it.

Hey you gonna make it to Andys funny farm on Thursday?

Herb,
Sadly no, I have a turnaround (outage) at work I'm leading and can't get away. That is as long as I don't catch something cough cough...

I haven't missed a day of work for being sick since 2005 so I doubt I'll get sick though. :( As far as I can remember that was the only day I've ever missed for being sick. It was Christmas Eve and I was going to cover someone else's shift so they could travel out of town when I caught the flu and it knocked me on my ****...well knocked my **** onto the toilet that is. :lol_hitti

Have a good one,
JB

I was finely able to figure out a problem with the S10, the O2 sensors. Let me catch you up on where all I've been with them. I'm only running the front sensors as I'm not concerned what the O2's are after the catalytic converters. :bounce: As soon as it was together I knew I wasn't getting correct data from them as they never moved from .45 volts. Typically they should go from ~.1 to .95 volts give or take and go back and fourth between the two.

I replaced one after my attempt at a bench test said it failed. Still nothing, I replaced both of them with a different brand and still nothing. What I didn't do is properly diagnose them but didn't really know how at the time. I took the time to really dig in and eventually discovered the harness I purchased was not wired correctly.

The tan and tan/white wires were in the correct location going into the computer for sensor 1 on each bank. The purple and purple/white wires were wired for sensor 2 on each bank of the engine. So I was getting 1/2 of a signal for each sensor and the computer couldn't figure it out.

I pulled the plug and moved the purple and purple/white wires, started the truck and logged the results:
attachment.php

Working great now.

I also dug into a previous 80% throttle run from 8 mph to 70 mph where I was looking for transmission slip. I thought I discovered I was slipping really bad at low speeds and high load. Turns out I don't think I am slipping at all it was just the speed difference because of the gear I was in. :lol_hitti I also don't think I'm just blowing through the torque converter. :headscrat

Now I have to try to figure out why it feels like a dog, not nearly as fast as I would expect for the amount of power it should have. Hmmm.

On a related note the drag strip in Arkansas City, Kansas is supposed to re-open after a few years on the 21st of September. I may just have to take a trip up there and make a run and log it to see if I can discover any other problems I might be having.

Sure makes sense now. Are you using HP Tuners? Clear out your kam memory and start from scratch now that you can control fuel in closed loop, follow your AFR's at part and full throttle, adjust as needed, then go to timing, transmission, etc. Good luck!

Last Run is coming up, its a old and nice car show. Usually have around 1200, of all kinds of vehicles. They also have vendors that sell car parts to flea market , and Tee shirts. It cost a few bucks for entry, but nice park location. If you have a nice paint job on your vehicle, don't park it close to the kiddy swings and other play ground stuff. Sometimes some kids will throw the small rocks at cars etc. Ask me how I know. I think on Sunday they open the drag strip, not sure if they do the nostalgia drags this year or not?
JB, I had a lady give me some old cover alls that belonged to her husbands friend. They are from CONOCO, one pair are from the 40's and it looks like the logo was painted on, Another pair has the patches about Ponca City, and got a old plastic hard hat that has the logo on it. These were before Phillips merged or bought out CONOCO. I will try and get some pictures of the stuff. They look like they would fit you, I think men were just physically smaller back in the 40's and 50's.

Rix,
Yes I'm using HP Tuners, I've never heard of clearing out kam memory so I'll have to investigate that a bit more. I really need to get a wide band O2 sensor to do much with the AFR's from what I understand. I plan to do a little bit of work on it but don't want to spend too much time on this tune because I will be putting a cam in this winter along with some new gaskets and other fun things.

Yep spot on Ric.

1/2,
Glad ya'll concur it must mean that is the way to go.

Dwight,
It was a relief but now for some reason the AC isn't kicking on. Hmmm I've never been but plan to try to make it this year. Also as Herb mentions below they are reopening the drag strip in Ark. City and having the Nostalgia drags too I think on Friday.

Herb,
I've heard about it a lot but never been, I'll try to convince my lovely wife to bring the girls and her Jeep along for it. I have a pair of OLD coveralls that are green and say CONOCO in yellow painted letters. They are really big on me and are probably 40 years old or so. (Yeah I said it REALLY OLD like 40 years old. :lol_hitti:lol_hitti)

Post some photos if you have them. Phillips and Conoco merged in 2002 so not that long ago really only 16 years...**** that was a bit ago, I must be getting old too.

Well after about 2 minutes of searching it looks like KAM (Keep Alive Memory) will reset when you disconnect the battery (Which I did when I repined the ECU connector), and when you flash a new tune with HP Tuners (Which I did this morning with a bit of spark adjustment.) Looks like I should be good to go.

I really haven't been doing too much exciting lately, of course I have been pretty busy with work doing a shutdown/turnaround/outage whatever you want to call it but here is a small update. I had my truck and trailer full of scrap:
attachment.php

I traded that scrap and $100 for some new steel, seems odd I give them 1,500 lbs (680 kg) and they take my money and only give me 150 lbs of steel in a different shape. :headscrat

If you looked closely and remembered back I also installed the front drivers side fender flare, much better, not good but better. I also finished everything on my little to do list other than the fuel gauge. I can't fix it all at once or I wouldn't have anything on the "round to it" list. :lol_hitti

I also tried something I haven't done in a really long time, probably 2 years, I washed my green car:
attachment.php

Yep still ugly but the tank before I got almost 51 mpg, and a 10 tank average of 48 it deserved a little love.

I also finely ordered a timing light that works in something other than complete darkness as well as a vacuum gauge. I used these to tune the idle air screws on the carb as well as the timing for max vacuum then backed the timing off 2 degrees. From what I've read that is about what I should do and where I should be. I took it out for a test drive and was shocked! :shocking: It ran like a completely different car. Before I'd have to really get on it and try to break the tire loose in 1st. Now in 2nd when I punch it I'm on a slip-n-slide, it caught me off guard the first time but I learned to love it.
attachment.php

I also ordered a wideband O2 sensor that'll work with my tuning software but also has a gauge so I can use it to tune on the cobra a little if I feel it is necessary.

I have another project coming for a visit this weekend that is really out of the ordinary for me and will give a recap if it all works out.

No problem now Herb, I could have borrowed one as well but got tired of it sitting on my wish list and wanted to give it a shot. Now the only vehicle I own that I can use a timing light on is timed...I guess I don't need it anymore, or need to buy another vehicle to use it on. LOL

Good to see you are getting things in tip top running order! Do you work at a refinery? My uncle worked at a small private( later owned by Co-op) one across the river from my home town and I remember the big shutdown to install the first, and only, cracking tower in Nebraska. Big deal in a small town and they threw a big, free bbq for the unveiling and fire-up! People, especially farmers, were worried the atea would run out of fuel No pipeline into the area then. Gas was $0.16/gal! Hope it goes/went well.

I was about to ask you what prompted the car wash, then realised you were just making sure it continues to deliver sensible mileage.

Funny hot the “blue car” looks very clean and shiny, however, I suspect the consumption is a bit better, or is that worse than the 48 average.

Rixtrix,
Yes I do, I won't say for who but I really don't know why I'm sure you have seen the logo in some of my photos before. I know what can happen when something big like that happens in a small town. When we had the second largest portable crane in the world here a few years ago it was a pretty big turnout from the town. We gave guided tours to some people from the city council, and a few hundred kids from schools in the area. The crane we used was I believe the Mammoet PTC 200-DS, not my photo but one I stole from the interwebs:
attachment.php

In the configuration we used it in it had a total reach of 525 feet (175m) but with all of the masts it could have had 627 feet (190m), max lifting capacity is 3,200 metric tons or just over 7,000,000 pounds. If you look close at the photo on the ground you can see people walking around. The red boxes on the back are shipping containers and were filled with sand for our use. I can't remember all of the specs but it was an incredible site to see. I remember one morning coming into work and seeing the crane from ~20 miles away.

TA went well thus far and is over for my part unless something happens during startup. Fingers crossed

I think I knocked a couple hundred pounds of dirt/mud off of it when I washed it. Felt good to see it clean for the first time in years. The fobra does stay pretty clean most of the time but the mpg is pretty laughable for something of that size. Looks like my average is 14 with high of 17 and a low of 7, not bad for a 2,400 lb car. :lol_hitti

JB I luv the Cobra. I am glad you are getting on top of things.:3gears::3gears:

Thank you 1/2, I've become quite fond of it myself. Strange that I have owned it for over 8 years now and have never tried to tune the carb and timing other than by a very untrained ear. What gave me the kick was watching a show on Motor Trend on Demand called Roadkill Garage. Most of it is hi-jinks but there are some really good tips and tricks they explain pretty well.

Cobra? Where’d that come from? Lol. Wish my daily driver got 18 mpg let alone 48.

I bought it in 2010 a year after I graduated college, I called it my student loan because I was able to pay my own way through school. It is what I refer to as the Warthog as Andy mentions below. Since I purchased it I've replaced the entire front suspension with tubular arms and adjustable coilovers also with bigger brakes. Narrowed 9" axle with discs rather than drum brakes as well as coilovers. I had the seats and dash re-upholstered, re-wired most of the car, went to an internally regulated GM alternator, new accessory drive, and replaced the transmission after I broke it in Louisiana. Engine however I haven't really touched, it is from a mid 70's full size car with iron heads but it may have a cam, I don't know.

I believe that is the Warthog that hides in the garage.

Beautiful car, by the way.

Spot on Andy.

I had a pretty busy weekend but really didn't get much photo worthy progress made. Friday I helped my buddy with his Mustang. He was ready to get brighter headlights. Here is a before and after he put together:
attachment.php

We also fiddled around on a few other small projects on it but one I should have photo'd but didn't was some transmission work. The output shaft seal had been leaking and we discovered the output shaft bushing was in need of replacement as well. Not too bad and the lift was great to get it all apart and put back together.

I cleaned the shop a bit and got sidetracked on drill bits. I have one complete set of bits from tiny to 1/2" that I use most of the time and keep sharp but have a bunch of other misc. bits I inherited from my grandfather that needed sharpening. I spent a couple hours playing on the Drill Dr. and they are all done now:
attachment.php

Saturday each of my daughters had a soccer game and another game on Sunday. I'm very happy to report they each scored their first goals this weekend. :bounce: Between the games on Saturday I helped my BIL move, had a break for lunch and made a huge mistake and ate something I shouldn't have. My stomach has been very mad at me since but I think is finely getting better now. The other mistake I made wasn't as involuntary, I tweaked my back again but it didn't really start hurting until later at night. Now I'm pretty much useless to do anything but still had to mow on Sunday and that didn't do it any favors. I don't recommend having GI issues and severe back pain at the same time. It makes for some rough days. :(

Tell me more about those headlights in the Mustang... what brand & how do they do as far as light patterns?

Thanks!

From what he has said they are much brighter than the original lights, I can't say 1st hand though about the pattern or of course longevity of them. They are Turbo Sii brand about $85 on amazon. Now as far as installation I wasn't really happy with them on his car. The retaining ring didn't fit with the new lights very well at all. We were able to make them fit but not a fan of that part at all. If I were to trim/grind on them some I'm sure they would have fit much better. I'm thinking about getting a set for my wife's Jeep to see how she likes them but I know REALLY good lights for it are much more expensive. We shall see in time...

I think I'll pass, I'm about burned out on bits for now. :bounce: Thanks for the offer though.

Looks a little bit better.

I don't think I mentioned it but the strange high class project that was supposed to be in my shop last weekend was pushed back a week due to the weather. So I had a week to kill with other small projects and now that the drill bits are all sharp I decided to tackle this little project:

Anyone care to take a guess other than an effigy or the obvious wiring? :bounce:

I do have a bit of copper and brass, and a good amount of aluminum for you Andy but there won't be much copper to give away off of this harness. I had 45°F (7.2°C) this morning, it was perfect weather for working in the shop. I opted out of driving my cobra today though, just a bit too cool for that.

Outlaw,
You are correct in that it is a red/blue harness for a 411 drive-by-cable ECU. I already have a bench harness that I made a couple of months ago, but what is the PP your referring to?

It is actually going to be a standalone harness to control a 5.3L LM7 (LS based engine) and a 4L60E transmission. The plan for now is to put that into my brothers in-laws '83 C10. I've been asked to install a cam and do a basic tune on the engine to get it running, they will install it and I'll do the final tune on the engine once the truck is running. My plan is to get it all together, install it on the old Suburban frame and do the test running and initial tuning on that chassis. We shall see how that plan goes though.

I thought maybe it was for Pinkie Pie.

I can't even keep track of my own acronyms. :lol_hitti I have another engine I can use for P.P. and two more harnesses if needed. I think I just have too many projects :headscrat

Nope, not that, I just have a work problem, work gets in the way of shop time that is a problem.

Ambitious project!

I think my part of the project will be easy enough Andy, getting it to run in and communicate with the C10 will be the hard part.

I pulled more wire and cut some today, nothing exciting. I did drive the cobra today though, nice cool drive.
