Like the Pink Jeep!

The brakes should not have to be pumped. Air is the usual culprit as you know, but it can also be a bad master cylinder. As long as that thing is you probably need to bleed a quart through to the rear cylinders to be sure to have swept the lines.

Now that I've shot off my loud mouth I'm starting on the 48 Coupe brakes.

Great to see the progress.

One day.....l

I will find the right S10@ the right $$$’s

Square backs are great, but Notchbacks rule Herb 😉

There are plenty of S10's out there, some just take more to get "right" like mine. :(

Sweet pink Jeep. Reckon it will still be around when she gets her license.

Thank ya War Wagon,
That is the plan anyway, she just turned 8 so we have a little bit of time before that happens.

Thanks Andy, not my first choice of colors, but it isn't mine so my opinion doesn't really count.

The master cylinder is/was new (I know that doesn't necessarily mean it works.), I'll adjust the cylinders and see where I'm at. Does yours have a power brake booster on it, this one is in the upper right of the photo below:
attachment.php

I wish you the best bleeding the brakes on the '48.

All,
I went to move the hearse back to the lift to adjust the brakes, it started right up and died seconds later. It would run on starting fluid, then die again. :headscrat I drove it for 12 miles last week total with no issues like this. I noticed the fuel filter was almost empty so I put a couple of gallons in the tank, still nothing. The fuel tank, lines, pump, hoses etc. are all new, there is no reason it shouldn't be getting fuel. Well it turns out one of the check valves in the fuel pump fell out of its seat. Back together now and on the lift for brake adjustments once again.

The brake issue you describe makes it sound like the brakes are just out of adjustment. The m/c only moves so much fluid per ‘stroke’ and if that’s not enough fluid to cause the wheel cylinders to put the shoes in contact with the drum it’ll require more.

I sure hope that is the issue, time will tell when I adjust them a bit more.

But something I didn't completely notice when I picked them up was what kind of shape the lug holes were it, I don't know what happened to the rear wheels but they are wallered out bit time. I installed one and tightened the lug nuts but was just too afraid they would eventually pull through and cause a very bad day for me to I'm not going to use them for the time being. :( I may end up using them as roller spares for Project Pinkie Pi though.

JB

Well that *****... hopefully you didn't pay too dearly for the wheels...

One possible remedy for the wheels... you can bore the holes and press in steel inserts. I’ve done this before when I was actually changing/modifying a bolt pattern of a set of wheels. Worked like a charm. They have several different one too.

Bing bing bing, we have a winner, Nlped, that is exactly what I was going to do, if only I knew someone with a mill big enough...

those are re-pop C6 wheels (I assume you knew that when you bought them though). Probably still workable with the inserts Nlped posted but those style wheels are really common as well, can probably pick up another set pretty easily. if you absolutely have to and swap tires.

I always wonder on deals like that - did the seller know that or? Had they driven around with loose lugnuts at some point but just tightened them up and thought "yeap that's fine now"?

The jeep is awesome!

I was thinking if the wheel cylinders weren't leaking then they are good. I'm leaning more to, has air in there still floating around. I mean the car is almost as long as a football field.
I think I have a brake line vaccum from HF. I also have the new hood hinges. They are kindof cheap looking from China. The springs are different, instead of the big spring, it has a coil type spring like on a watch. Tell me when you want me to come back down to helf on the brakes and stuff.

Iced,
I did know they were re-pop style when I saw them, the owner said he'd taken them on trade and didn't claim to know about the wear I did see until I pointed it out but who knows. Either way if the inserts end up working then great, if not I have some cheapish rollers to figure out wheel tub clearances etc.

Thank you on the Jeep, I'm happy the girls were able to find one that is already pink. Only partly because it'll save me a ton of time and work later on. :)

You are too far away though, thanks for volunteering.

Get out there with a file. Mills are for wimps. :pimpflash

Big drill bit!

Wheel cylinders aren't leaking, I adjusted them this morning and they are better but I need to drive it to really know if they are usable. I have a vacuum bleeder too and really don't like them, I've never been able to get a good bubble free bleed on brakes with it before. Feel free to come out early on Saturday and/or Sunday, I'm free until around 10 on both days. Also feel free to call and we can discuss more. It starts much better now that the fuel pump works.

Awesome picture.

Thank you Mike, I have a feeling you didn't mean my photography skills but rather the subject of the photo, and I agree.

All,
In preparation to sell the white Jeep my wife requested I swap the bumpers with fog lights, winch, radio, and a few other things. I noticed online many bumpers were listed as good for a variety of years from 76-06 and both bumpers on the TJ were universal fit. I looked at the two and thought it would be a simple bolt up job. I was not correct in that thought process. :(

Here you can see what I started off with...kinda:
attachment.php

I started off pulling everything off of the pink Jeep to install on the white one. These actually bolted up pretty easy all in all and went on quickish:
attachment.php

The most time consuming part was the wiring, the fog lights that were now on the white Jeep were never installed with a relay (why does that never surprise me :wtf:), I wired one in, wrapped it in split loom and tied it in place. Sadly no photos but the light output was much better at full running voltage.

Next up it was the pink Jeeps turn, this is there things went south. I refused to cut/drill in it so the bumpers are what had to be modified. The rear bumper was easy enough, the mounting studs didn't line up with holes, the studs were removed cut smooth and new holes drilled (partly through the old stud) for new bolts to be installed. Next up was the front bumper that must weight 300 pounds (metric **** ton). Mock it in place, admire look, remove, place on bench, measure 20 times, mark holes, drill, install, bolt down tight, mark lower holes, repeat, and finely install one last time. I'm tired just thinking about it again and my back is reminding me of that, but it is on and solid:
attachment.php

Sadly the winch plate is too far off to work so another will be sourced at some point. Reused the good relay setup that came with the lights on this bumper and we are in business.

Next on the list is to swap the radios, easy just pull the one out of the white Jeep and...wait what is this:
attachment.php

The pink Jeep wiring was worse and hacked in by a goat eating barb wire. I removed them wired in the one in the white Jeep and called it a day. At one point none of the Jeeps had spares on them and I thought this was cool:
attachment.php

From left to right JKU (35"ish), CJ7 (33"), TJ (31"). I'm in the middle of making a spare tire extension bracket for the white Jeep, it is built but needs painted, it fits the tire as close as I could and still clear the bumper but it fits fine. All that is left is to paint that, install a tire cover, wash it and get some for sale photos up. Anyone interested?

JB

One has to wonder about the genius brain surgeons who wire up stuff like that.

If they reproduce in the same way, it’s no wonder the world is so messed and filled with the people it is filled with.

My Blazer had the same guys brother or cousin do the lights. Or possibly his mother who is also his sister.

Nothing like parts that "fit perfectly" and have to be beat into submission.

War Wagon,
Luckily the only hammer I needed to use was a rubber mallet. Now a drill, yeah I had to do a lot of drilling, but all is well that ends well.

Grizz,
I really think most of it is people that just don't know better. I know I have done some hack jobs in the past and try to do better now that I know better, but old habits die hard. :) I will say all of the connections were pretty good and still clean. Now in the pink Jeep they used a grand assortment of connection methods and few were what I'd like to see. All back together now though and a stereo in each that works just fine.

All,
As promised here is the spare tire extension I threw together for the white Jeep:
attachment.php

*EDIT* Wow the reflections make the weld look terrible, it isn't perfect but is better than it looks, you'll have to trust me until I can get more photos of it. :)

I'll let the paint dry today and install it this afternoon. I didn't get home in time last night to give the white Jeep a bath but will do that today and hopefully get some photos of it to post it for sale.

As promised I'll show you a closeup of the welds on the spare tire carrier. It looks really bad undercut in the photo, I think it is just bad not really bad. :spit:

Spare mounted and it had a little bath, I didn't have time to really clean it as much as I wanted but managed to get some photos before the sun was too low.

With the spare mounted:

Before I start the next round of projects I just need to clean, clean clean clean, the shop looks like a tornado went off in there with stuff everywhere!

JB: nice work on the Jeeps. looks like your girls are very interested in what and how dad gets stuff done. I bet they will be very handy and great helpers as they grow up. my 2 girls are a lot more handy than my 3 boys are cause they watched and listened better.

that said when I talked my 30 year old thru a T trap removal you should have heard the EWWWEEE come over the phone when she saw the hairball that the prior owner had left her.

keep up the good work!!

Thanks Drives, they do enjoy being out there working some but don't seem to appreciate how uncomfortable it is compared to helping Mamma clean. Cat (5 year old) is a little tougher than Bear when it comes to dealing with discomfort though.

I don't blame her for saying that, I dislike cleaning hair balls as well.

All I can say is freaking rats! I've mentioned before a few things they have chewed up on vehicles but the latest is the variable geometry turbo solenoid which locks the truck into limp mode and VERY low boost. I'm off tomorrow and have a long list of things that I want to try to get done but this is now on the list as well.

I've already been putting poison blocks in the engine bay, they actually moved the block to eat the wire then ate most of the block. :headscrat What have ya'll done to keep them out of the engine bay altogether? It is odd they will keep eating on this one but don't touch other vehicles.

JB: get a CAT. here's my rodent's worst nightmare and her name is Cleo. she was a rescue (so probably a bit wild) that was 4-5 years old when we got her and she's got our perimeter (about a 2 block radius at last siting) pretty much rodent free except for a rabbit and squirrel she likes (she kills pretty much every baby bunny though). I haven't seen rats, mice in years and even the raccoons are taking a different route to avoid her.

with a property as big as yours maybe a few ferral cats would be great cause I had one at a rental years ago that i'd feed in the winter time, but come spring she'd follow me around and as i pulled out stuff of the burn pile to re organize for the next burn she'd eat a mouse almost as fast as they'd run out from the pile. one time i swear that she ate 5 or 6 mice in maybe 15 minutes.

meet CLEO. if you look close in the tree she's bird hunting in the tree in front of our house.

best of luck and even though i know you have the skills to fix bad or damaged wiring it's a PITA so hopefully you get the rodents to go to the next farm.

Drives,
Thanks for the reply, I have considered getting another cat but am torn, our last outside cat lasted about two year before she disappeared. I don't know what happened for sure but have on several occasions seen coyotes in the yard so there is that possibility. One other problem I had with her was she would climb on vehicles, some that is fine, but if I have a friends/customer car and they scratch the paint it wouldn't be an ideal situation.

She was a nice cat even if she refused to use the litter box more than once a day. :wtf: Anywhere else in the shop was fair game though. :headscrat

Maybe I need a pet hawk and a couple of owls...

JB: some of my saddest days were when one of our pets passed, but maybe if you go to the place where you can save a cat from being killed and even give her a few good years I bet she/he would love being with you.

with all the gadgets you make and think of I'm certain you can figure out a way to keep the cat(s) off your client's and your cars and I bet the clients would love seeing cat(s) around much more than rats with long tails. maybe have a drop down net over the vehicles in for repairs?

your call and yep the coyotes need to live so cats and small animals are on their list and we've even had a few show up around here (I lost one cat years ago and didn't know if somebody grabbed him or he met his fate going up the food chain), but our pets are usually happy while they are with us.

Cleo has actually been in more of my neighbor's homes than I have since she's been roaming our neighborhood, but she comes home most every night about 10pm.

good luck

Sounds like you have a socialite on your hands. Cleo sounds like a wonderful companion and one I've seen you mention in other threads a few times. If a cat were to show up I'd give them a chance but doubt I'll pick one up on purpose.

It is somewhat surprising how many coyotes we have but how few I see. Some early mornings in the shop I can't hear my music over their howling. Of course they could be howling because I'm singing along with it. :bounce:

JB,
Have you thought about getting rid of the old grain? It could be a source of food for your population. Other than that no good ideas.

X2 on the grain. Even though it's a ways from the shop.

Also, leaving the hood up is good for vehicles parked inside. The rats or mice like a dark place. Moth balls under the vehicle is a remedy I've heard but not proven.

Living in the midst of fields like you do is a natural habitat for them so your situation will be worse than most. The guys in Illinois in the middle of corn fields have it tough too.

Sealing the shop is not a very viable option for you because of your doors.

you need a couple of good snakes. This is the one that was riding around under my tractor seat, when it popped its head out from under the seat and started to come up between my legs I seen something moving from the corner of my eye. This is when I knew that ********* thing wasn't a part of me, and jumped off the tractor while moving. This snake was at least 10 feet long. Had really pretty blue eyes.:yikes: Good thing the safety switch killed the motor. I found it a few hours later in the barn behind some plywood leaning against the wall.:yikes::Help:
This will take care of your RATMOUSE problem.

JB: I still feel bad that one of our dogs may have passed a year or two early cause she got in my garage where there was rat poison. I can't recall, but I think you have a dog or dogs so putting out poison could have a terrible side effect.

I like the food chain way to get rid of pest issues hence me not tearing down spider webs anywhere in our bushes and moving them from across the paths that they seem to learn not to make webs across now. that keeps the NO SEE UM bugs to a minimum here and haven't seen many mosquitoes in years that used to be an issue.

one of the members found 2 copperheads in his garage or burn pile and actually has them as pets now. i'm not a snake guy but having a few RAT SNAKES might be your answer and get a cat or two cause even though you might lose one or two maybe the coyotes will survive to flush out the rats so the hawks and other critters can kill them.

good luck and hope you are having a great weekend!!

If I saw that peaking out between my legs, I would have been off that tractor and in the house without my feet ever touching terra firma.

Get a Great Pyrenees to take care of the predators. Then get a cat.

What if the Great Pyrenees ends up being lazy, would he then be a Meh Pyrenees?

JB,

I should stop being lazy and clean that out but lazy is easy.

Haha nice, gotta love them, keeps you from being bored at least. By the way I should be able to sneak away while you are going from place to place on your trip. At the very least it looks like the road you take headed from Herbs to Ada has you pass through Ponca City, Ok. which is where I work, I'm sure we can make something happen.

How about 9am ish Sunday morning?

Sorry for the delay Herb, I had to leave town this past weekend on short notice as I'll explain below.

I guess I have to clean the grain bin out now, I figured they would eventually finish it all off and the problem would solve itself. :)

This reminds me of a story about a women who swallowed a fly. Pet rat snakes are one thing, but pet copperhead, I'll pass but they are beautiful.

:yikes:

If I saw that peaking out between my legs, I would have been off that tractor and in the house without my feet ever touching terra firma.

Holy ****!

I thought the same thing, I'm not afraid of snakes but I'm afraid of being surprised by anything. I think that stemmed from the first wild cat I befriended, he was all black with some funny white stripes. Little did I know how terrible his gas was.
