No pics means you're working quickly and efficiently...at least that's what I tell myself!
Yeah, lets go with that. :bounce:

The winch on my trailer gets used for all sorts of things it shouldn't. One day I will get the winch mounted on my truck.

I'm starting to think I need a few more, really need one on my trailer, but it isn't really built strong enough for me to feel comfortable mounting one.

I am considering on for my tractor.

That is an interesting idea, I assume mount it to the front on the frame?

All,
As was expected the Ranger bumper was too narrow for the Silverado so out came the cutoff wheel. Photos to follow when I decide where to stop cutting.

Thinking of putting it on the loader frame or making it where I can mount it on the bucket. Haven't really put a lot of thought into it.

I realized that I needed to get a photo of the engine out of the cobra to at least show I'm working on it, well you are in luck:
attachment.php

I heard from the engine builder last week and he said they are going to have to sleeve one cylinder (previous damage I tried to ignore but shouldn't have), and possibly two cylinders. Other than that not much to report on it.

I have modified the bumper from the Ranger enough to fit on Project Lever Action, I thought it was funny so it now has a name. I ended up having to cut all of the mounting brackets off of the bumper and make my own. Two were butchered together but the other two were actually thought out and tig welded, no photos of them though, photo of it mounted:
attachment.php

The winch is hooked up and working so that is nice, I do have more work to do on the bumper itself as well as build a cover for the controls. While mowing I moved all of the vehicle and thought this was a cool shot:
attachment.php

Also in other news I bought a 6' brush hog for the tractor, no photos but it is ugly but it works, kinda like me ugly but works. :rocker:

Bumper looks at home on the Silverado JB. Nice work!

I think you need 3-4 more vehicles and then just start a used car lot!

You still have some catching up to me in the cars in the yard department. LOL. I am up to 32. I really need scrap price to go up.

That bumper looks brutal. If someone runs into that they will regret it.

I was surprised at how well it ended up fitting, after some adjustments. Definitely home made, there wasn't much consistancy or square to it and now I've just added to the mess so the next person will really laugh at it.

I don't think I need to catch up, it takes long enough to move these when I mow. Last load I took in was only $30/ton. :dunno:

It is probably better than stock as for strength, but for this truck I really just wanted the ground clearance and of course the winch.

Always looks like a party at you house I bet. All those different cars and trucks lol

I keep them shuffled so it always looks like someone is home. What is bad is you can't see the two tractors, two "motorcycles", and other 4 cars. Yeah I may have a problem...

Well The Lemon finely made it, I hit 200,000 miles earlier this week:

You know what that means...yep time for an oil change. This would be a special oil change though, I bought it a present, an oil drain can that I can use on the lift:

That is about if for now, have a good one all.

You need to take that model B out for a drive.

The oil drains like that are sweet, but don't forget to keep track of the level. I can't tell you how many time I've watched Dad overfill his. Of course Ive done it a bunch myself too. Its a big mess and a bi!#$ to dump out. I suppose it would be less hassle if his waste oil tank wasn't across the shop, through a door, around a tractor, over the dozer tracks, around a saw and behind a plow. Nothing like an obstacle course with 6gal of warm oil in an awkward slippery bucket in your hands.

Anyhow, we still need a pic of that ugly brushhog you bought.

I really do, I stopped by Napa to buy a battery and they couldn't look up what I needed. I found out later and just haven't went back. It has been too long and will cause other problems if I don't.

I'll keep that in mind, I know I still have plenty of oil spilling left in my life. So far it only has a bit over 4 quarts in it.

Just make sure you close the valve before you put air pressure to it to drain it. Other wise you will have a really great post about the mess you made.

This is one of those non-pressurized units, just dump to empty.

Nice to catch the speedo on its turn over.

I have missed more than one over the years.

I was glad to get this one, I've had 5 of these cars over the years and all were either hit and totaled or sold before reaching 200k. But I finely got one even if it had the engine replaced once.

Thanks for stopping in E, I am never bored, there is too much to do and never enough time.

Speaking of that, XJ, the B is on the very short list, I cleared out around it this morning and started getting ready to fire it up. I was checking over everything when I noticed a mud dobber nest in the air intake. :wtf: To get the intake off to clean it out I have to pull the hood, to pull the hood I need Clutch Head bits and don't have any. I'll pick some up today when I get a battery for it. I'll have it running this weekend, or waiting on parts. Thanks for the push to get it running again.

Progress was made and photos were taken...that is all. Oh fine then I'll actually post something since I'm already here. The bolts that hold the hood on have this "bow tie" opening and some don't have the hex on the outside. I couldn't find any of those bits anywhere in town that were big enough so I decided to make my own, I took some 3/8" (9.5mm) round rod and turned it down to .300" on one end then ground and filed until it fit the opening and welded it to an extra 3/8" socket:
attachment.php

Just like that I have a new tool, woo hoo, and it even worked. To continue on I then found out the gas tank is connected to the hood, making it tough to pull. Well time to drain the tank, huh it isn't draining... :dunno: Turns out the petcock/filter/fuel bowl was gummed up, pulled it off and let the fuel/varnish drain out. There all clean and ready to re-install:
attachment.php

That's when I got a call from work and had to go in for most of the day. Sunday was spent mowing and discovering the 4010 is throwing a fit. I'm pretty sure the float is stuck open as it is just dumping fuel out of the carb (electric pump) when the key is on. I also don't think the alternator is working, but have to get it running to test running voltage.

Never boring,

JB

Sorry, I should have warned you that pulling the hood would be a pain. All the rowcrop two-cylinders of that style had tanks strapped into the hoods. I can see that you have a cut hood around the muffler, thats because whoever messed with the muffler last didn't want to do what you are trying to. There are tens of thousands of As and Bs out there with cut hoods like that.

Pretty slick little tool you made. I like it. I can't remember what the significance of those bolt heads was.

The joys of owning old tractors! I feel your pain!

It'll all get fixed eventually, but really don't want to get into the carb on the 4010. Oh well, can't let it stay in the field forever.

I noticed the cut hood and didn't really know what to think of it. I'm sure my grandfather or great-grandfather are the ones that did the work on the hood. But since you mention it I need to replace the muffler, this one has a few extra holes in it that really aren't needed, or intended. I guess I shouldn't have given up so easy, time to keep plugging away at removing it. Glad I didn't completely fill the tank after cleaning up the outlet.

Well then, that was more work than I expected. Hood is off along with a drained gas tank, I only had about 1 gallon in it from refilling anyway. So to take the hood off you have to remove the steering wheel and the steering shaft from the front. :dunno:
attachment.php

Either way the tractor is well on it's way, cleaned about 10 pounds of mud dobber nests out and slowly going back together with it. I completely drench a shirt in about 20 minutes so my work sessions even in the morning is limited to under an hour. New muffler on order so it may not go back together until I replace that.

Since you like JD tractors, I thought I would share one my dad owned when I was a kid... a John Deere Model D (1935, I believe)

The day he bought it in 1975. Looked a little cold that day!

attachment.php

He rebuilt the engine in 1977.

attachment.php

And the day he sold it in 1984. It was never perfect, but we had a good time with it, using it on our 20 acre hobby farm.

I'd forgotten you grew up up north, I can't remember exactly what part but am thinking Mn. for some reason. Yeah way too cold for my blood. Looks like he put a ton of work into it over the years but sure looks sharp. I think of most things like a new car, that first scratch will drive you mad so might as well not quite make it perfect.

The sound of the 2 cylinder was/is certainly unique. I'm pretty excited to get mine running again but can't dive too deep into it just yet.

Sorry for the delay in checking in, last week was crazy, our once every 3 years audit hit and I didn't get much sleep or time off. Back now and in much better shape. The work continues on the ol' Model B, it will run when using carb cleaner into the intake but won't stay running on gas so I need to pull the carb off and try cleaning it again.

I pretty much have the concrete all cleaned up and that area graded and done until grass grows back in, what it started as:
attachment.php

And where it is now:
attachment.php

Lots of work but I'm much happier with it now.

So this is something I'd seen but never tried before and I'm impressed with it, works great for getting those stubborn little trees that the string trimmer just doesn't quite cut through. I also picked one up meant for thicker vegetation that seems to work well too:
attachment.php

Does anyone know what this thing is, about 3.5' long the top has splines and I suspect it is something from a farm implement but not sure what, any guesses?
attachment.php

The girls and I had a few minutes and some great weather last night so we went for a little cruise:
attachment.php

That is all for now, ya'll have a good one,

JB

Your rusty mystery tool looks a little like a water shutoff tool. Its upside-down in your pic. The top is the bent handle, and bottom gets shoved into a water valve and then its turned. Last one I saw was a T shape.

Could also be a farming tool for something but I can't think of any specific use.

I did get to look at some 4010s this last week and I was right the fenders and their mounts have several positions to use them.

Also, on my previous comments for tire size: 18.4 is just about the biggest anyone puts on those tractors but the original first wave of the New Generation (1010, 2010, 2510, 3010, 4010, and 5010) all came with smaller tires than the second wave (20 series). From the factory you tractor probably had 15.5R38 rears from the factory, but many argue 18.4R34s were an option, more commonly seen on 4020s (nearly the same tractor).

XJ, the mystery tool is about 1.25" in diameter and 3-3.5' long and solid. I really don't know what it is but it isn't much good anymore.

I'd be surprised if these were the factory tire size, it just doesn't seem to fit it all that well. Either way they are working great so far so I'll keep running them until I have to go another direction.

"Next time I have to pull the hood on the tractor I'll get to use it again, but won't be able to find it. "

My cellphone has a note feature ... I use it all the time and have separate folders for work, vehicles, house, lawn equip, ect. My go to for memory :)

Some of the early pull type farm equipment had shafts like that so you could make adjustments from the tractor seat.

Sifan,
I use the notes feature constantly on my phone, but probably wouldn't think to put the location of that tool there. If I didn't I wouldn't remember to look there to find it. :)

I'll have to have a look at some on the next property north from ours to see if I find anything similar.

Sorry for the delay, been busy as usual it seems. The coolest news is this:
attachment.php

Yep, got the Ol' B running again, fires right up and just chugs along. The main issue was the float was gummed up in the carb, cleaned the pivot point, and it ran like a top, well a two cylinder top a just a few RPM.

In other news I hadn't been able to adjust the top link on the mower on the 4010 since installing it. I couldn't turn it with my normal sized pipe wrench so I picked up a 36" (~.91m), and still couldn't move it even soaking in Kroll so this happened:
attachment.php

With about 10' of leverage it was pretty easy to turn and much better now. I also started making exhaust gaskets for the collectors on the cobra. I'm cutting them out of Hanna NA1076, I got a scrap from work and it is rated at 700°F (371°C) so hopefully it works but they have never had a gasket before so it won't be worse:
attachment.php

Oh and I got the engine back on Friday, 5.5 weeks after dropping it off, I'll take it. I should have just put an LS in it, it would have been SSSOOOOOOO much cheaper in the long run, I know all the arguments, but darn. Anyway, getting closer, last part arrives today and I'll fire it up tonight:
attachment.php

Y'all have a good one,
JB

Good news on the cobra! Bad news HRPT is cancelled. Good news I’ve made great progress on clutch install, torque tube rebuild, new seals in the diff on the 99, FRC vette for next years event. Just waiting on RPM transmission to get my T56 back to me. Then, everything else. At least the A/C works! Sorry, didn’t mean to rub it in.

Btw, the tractor is cool!

Yeah, I'm kinda bummed it was canceled, but to be honest when they moved the date and venues I lost a lot of interest then as well. Oh well, here is to next year. I'm glad to get the cobra running again, I had the first yesterday and let everything get up to temp, basically had no air bubbles in the coolant system but sadly had a small leak on the thermostat housing. I'll pick up another one and give it a try but the new cam sure does give it some nice lope.

Looking forward to you being able to drive it again, I really like the C5's and may have to own one someday. Yeah just rub in the AC part why don't ya. :scared:

Thanks about the tractor, it isn't much use since I have the 4010, but is fun.

Glad you goter running, another thing off the check list. I see the old grain bin, and keep thinking you should make a bar, BBQ, and play house out of it. Just fix the rust on the bottom and put some new corrugated metal and you have a nice little place for all to have fun.:dunno:

Thanks Herb, and long time no see. I think that would be a fun little place to enjoy food with friends and family but is low on the list unless my wife wants it higher on her list.

In other news I drove the cobra to work today, very fun. :3gears:
