The "WHY DIDN'T I BUY THIS SOONER?" thread

Thought this would be a fun thread to get the Christmas wish list filled out.

Last weekend I was nailing in some Simpson shear plates under the house after replacing a few footings/posts. It was my first time trying to install 16d common nails with a hammer. I got about 2 dozen nails sunk from the 1lb box, and the rest were scattered around the floor, all bent to hell from my efforts. I was near-to-tears furious and frustrated and about to knock the entire F'ng house down with the hammer in my hand--probably would have started to if I didn't have to stop working when I ran out of nails (good thing I didn't get the 5lb box). For $40 I picked up a Bostitch Palm Nailer and used it today for the first time to finish the job, and with another box of nails. I went through the whole box and didn't waste a single nail. This thing is exactly what I needed, and made the job fun.

What about you? What tool have you bought where the only downside was the regret you felt for not buying it sooner?

Lift cart. I picked one up off CL for $50 to move my garage cabinets around. I thought I'd get rid of it but I found that I use it all the time.

Impact driver for sure. Got a 18V DeWalt for my B-Day this year, the cordless drill hasn't seen too much use since.......'cept for when I need a hole in sumpthin'.

Close second would have to be a welder. Got a Lincoln AC/DC225 for X-mas last year.....my wife and inlaws are awesome! No more do I have to bug my neighbor every time I break something on the tractor. Not sure how I lived with out it. Now I'm saving up my Cdn. Tire rewards points to buy a nice mig.

I've found that I haven't used my ratcheting wrenches much. I bought a 10mm for when I was working on my wife's jeep where it only had maybe 10 degrees of movement and the combo wrench took forever. Ratcheting wrench made it much faster. I bought a full set after that, and haven't used them much since.

For me? Renting a place with a garage. It's so nice not having to completely button everything up and put everything back in the toolbox, having power, a workbench, adequate lighting, weather protection, speakers with music going, storage, etc.

smartphone. Have had it for about 2 months and can't do without it now. Just so nice to be able to monitor & respond to me ebay stuff on the go, look things up while at auction or shopping, and have access to reference websites when I'm out and about. Having google on the road is huge.

Having all of my music at hand is great too.

As much as I hate the bill at the end of the month, its easily saved me $30 (additional to my old bill) per month in time and actual money. My wife's though isn't justified beyond not having to hear her complain...

7x11 lathe. I'm surprised at all the bushings, adapters, fittings, and frobs I've made with that little thing. My latest tool is a home-made adjustable engine push-rod for determining the optimum push-rod length for the engine in my race car. (It turns out the factory length is perfect, but after mixing and matching parts, its good to double-check.)

plasma cutter

I'm eager to get one of my own. After using a friend's it's on my mind every time I have a project that could be simplified by one.

For me, especially lately, it's been my used 24" Snap On strikable prybar. I want a complete set badly, now, just because I could see them replacing every other prybar in the drawer.

Solar powerd welding helmet, Pressure washer, those mini flashlights that you get free with purchase at HF and a kerosene powered "torpedo" heater

Miller auto dark welding helmet. I wish I had bought it when I bought the mig.
Roto head ratchets
Long handle ratchets
Ratcheting wrenches

I couldn't get anything done without them now.

I still need to buy a cutting torch or plasma at some point, but the price is keeping me from doing it. I need something better than a grinder for cutting metal.

+1,000 on the ratcheting wrenches and impact driver. I bought the 12v impact driver. I can't believe the places I can get that thing to remove nuts and bolts on a motor. Plus it does pretty good at driving grabber screws too. Winning!!!

- +1 on the drill press. Every day I am in the workshop, I wonder how I survived without one.

- Rolling tool cart. Before that, I had all my tools in soft tool bags (having been a nomad most of my life). Needing a tool, knowing which drawer to open, grabbing what I need within seconds...nearly makes me cry every time.

- Rivet Fan (just ordering two of them today...the 10-hole and the 20-hole). There is NO easier way to evenly space a line of rivets (or any holes) than with this tool...

- Thread Checker...after having to take my nuts and bolts to a hardware store every time I wanted to identify them (and continually forgetting to take them 'on my next trip'), I finally got my own thread checker...exactly like the one at my local Ace Hardware...

It would probably have to be my Surefire Saint headlamp. I have 7 or 8 flashlights and this is by far my best and go to every time.

Tire Changer and Balancer. I had been looking at them for a long time and never bought one. Immediately after I got them I knew it was the right choice. My tires are better balanced than before - makes riding in my cars much more pleasant, and it saves a ton of money. I found a good deal on the tools, but I figure they were paid for in less than a year.

Veto Pro Pac - Now I have the tools I need where I need them. I can do probably 75% of the repair jobs I do with tools in that bag.

Forklift - A couple years ago I bought an old Clark forklift, I quickly found all the stuff you can do with one, and now I have a bigger Nissan.

Impact driver, i use it for trim, interior and undertray screws all the time, love it.

Decent blowtorch, Rothenberger SuperFire 2, freakin' awesome torch. (Still not quite oxy-acetylene.)

3/8" impact gun. Sees much more use than its bigger brother, it just kicks *** all day long. Takes most wheel nuts/bolts off too, big subframe bolts, the whole lot. There's very little it can't handle.

Impact swivel sockets and zero degree wrenches. Just used both today when rebuilding an ATV suspension.

any tool that my friends laughed at my for buying then they borrowed

But right now.. probably my DeWalt 12v Max Impact/Drill. I just need the flashlight and it'll be complete!

I wish DeWalt would release more tools for that group, much like what Milwaukee has done.

I had to stop and think about this one. I have a lot of tools. After the basic stuff each new tool makes things easier. But I guess the one that really surprised me was the multifunction power tool that can be bought expensively like a Fein for 300 bones or a cheapy HF for 20.

I have made more money with that tool this year than a lot of others. In the order of tools pulled out of my truck, it's hand tools in a bucket master, cordless drivers, sanders and saws, and that multi gizmo. Next comes specialty tools like nail guns, door hanging stuff, chop saw. After that it gets really specialized. Biscuit joiner type things.

I've used the multi repairing hardwood floors, tile, plaster cracks, cutting in place baseboards, cleaning up a bad miter joint and cutting metals.

Yeah, that one is the one I should have bought instead of poo-pooing it for so long. But, I never would have known if the $300 Fein was the only option. Now, I'd buy a Fein if that's all there was.
