Awesome Progress and nothing like the grunge garage thread!

Look at freecycle.org and see if you have one of those in your area, if you do just put stuff out curbside for people to come get and take.

Also, call your county and ask if they have a spring/fall or clean up day where you can bring your "scrap" like your windows, hazardous things like paint and electronics, etc. Ours has one once a year in the spring, and I have some giant totes I'll fill up with stuff to take there. With all your scrap lumber, build a few box pallets so it's easy for them to lift it off your trailer and pile it up with crud you don't know what to do with.

Sometimes the windows/doors/etc can be given away for people making small green houses with.

Also, the concrete rubble can be dumped at some places for free as long as it is "clean" and not trash. They use this as fill media to build on in the future. They usually have a sign that says no dumping but to call a number if you have clean fill dirt or fill media such as asphalt, concrete, etc.

Nothing picture worthy happened in this past week. Took Saturday off to go four wheeling so most of my downtime was spent clearing the garage to be able to get the jeep out, and a day of stress trying to fix all the things on the jeep that I broke last time I went wheeling.

So just some details on the building. Finished the door frames, they're the right size now. Bought some cheap MDF trim and installed as doorstop. Got some new doorknobs and deadbolts from Home Depot to get everything keyed alike.

Screwed a piece of OSB over the doorway under the stairs so the building is as secure as my house now. Nothing's going to stop someone determined who doesn't mind making noise, but at least the less motivated will stay out.

Another load of scrap wood is in the truck, hopefully I'll get up early enough to take it in on the way to work. There's a load of garbage ready to go in the truck as soon as its empty.

Still trying to find an economical way to put siding on it. There's always used siding for sale on craigslist but so far none of them have returned an email or phone call.

Tomorrow, grocery shopping. I never thought I would tire of fast food, but I believe I'm tired of late night fast food

It's been a long time since I've really touched the building. I was sick a long time, undiagnosed diabetes. No energy all the time. Joint and muscle pain constantly. Minor wrist and shoulder injuries from a fall at work were not healing. I'm getting better now.

I have done some other work around the property. Added a two piece bathroom to one of the bedrooms and replaced about ten feet of load bearing wall that was rotten because of the same old problem, none of my dad's projects were ever completed. The house never got proper rain gutters after the addition in 1984 so water has been funneling into the wall forever. So some bedroom renovations so I could bring in a roomate to help pay the bills, some attic insulation to help reduce the bills, and I've reframed the outside wall and back wall of the garage as they were rotting and out of square. My dad had snuck all the walls out to the edge of the roof overhang, removing two thirds of the wall studs and putting a header over the opening. While technically correct with the headers, there was no sheeting on the load bearing portion therefore no lateral stability.

Anyway, this thread is about the workshop.

Found two boxes if siding on clearance at Home Depot for $99 each and found some Similiar color leftovers on Craigslist for $140.

So it's got sheeting and siding as high as I could reach.

This looks intimidating, wild, and crazy, my kind of adventure. So I'm subscribing. Amazing work so far, keep moving. As for the busted concrete, put that in the free section. You never know when someone's going to want to fix or put in a dirt driveway. Go ahead and ask me how I know. For that matter, put everything you don't want and is in your way in the free section, it can't hurt. As for the budget, I feel some of your pain.

It hasn’t really changed much except it got filled with ****.

The siding still hasn’t been finished. The railings around the landing still isn’t done. The soffits are still open to rodents and insects.

I’ve done a lot of work on the house though.

Embarrassingly, not much changed for about a decade. It had as much siding as it needed, it was only done as high as I could reach. The back end wall wasn’t even complete. It had a bunch of sheathing missing on the top floor.
It didn’t really matter though, other than the odd raccoon, nothing got in there, it was protected by weather by all the tree cover.
This summer though the house behind me got sold, and the new owner took down all the trees.
One day this winter, there was water in one of my toolboxes.
I went upstairs and found a sprinkling of snow over everything.
a decade it’s been open to the elements and I’ve never had a drop of water inside.
So I’ve been working on the siding over the past few weekends.

Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Once you get rolling on this, do you think it'll give you the momentum to finish this off? At least the exterior?

Well I hope so. The siding and soffit materials have been a major pain in my way for all this time, taking a lot of floor space that could always be better utilized.

Well I expected to be a lot further along but there was a bunch of structural work to do, there was pretty much nothing but the roof sheeting supporting the overhang. Then I needed to put in some blocking to support the soffits later. Then the J-channel. The sun is setting it’s time to put the tools away for the night

I don't know if this is a reasonable request, but do you have any before/after pics of the exterior of the house and/or the yard? I had to go back and re-educate myself on where you came from, it's been a long, tough road for sure. Good luck with your progress.

Most pictures were lost in the Photobucket ransom fiasco. Even after I paid them there was only one photo left. I salvaged a few from another site, albeit with the photobucket watermark ingrained on them now. I’ll post what I can find

If it takes away from getting the job done, please push this request down the priority list. Work first, us second.

Here’s how it looks today. Yeah my yard is still a mess. The cedar trees dried up and died last summer so they’re gone. Exposing the awkward roofline. I’ll be straightening that out this year when I put new shingles on the roof and add more overhang to the far end wall.

Today I got the siding done on this wall and most of the soffit.

It’s amazing how long the little stuff takes.

Two different colour siding, three different colour J-Trim, and I think every corner post is a different colour. I’ve just used what’s available locally. The brown aluminum soffit was here, my Dad brought it home about thirty years ago to finish the house. I’ve gone with white vinyl on the house.

It's covered, call it good. What's the next step for you? For the shed?
Do the soffit the rest of the way around. Then the roof needs new shingles and I’ll straighten out the roofline at the same time. Add twelve inches of overhang on the far end of the roof too, it’s got a minimal amount now.
In between I try to clean up inside a little bit. 5C66EB12-7AF1-47AE-A175-7D8F5D50C9DF.jpeg

I see you are another unfortunate GJ member who is afflicted with FSD. Don't worry the support group here is pretty good lol.

Yes I often think a workbench should be a folding unit that blocks the door, so you have no choice but to clear the bench before you can exit.
Completely impractical but it could work.
Actually no. I would just stack stuff on the floor.
