Well... I got the application for the permit submitted. I should know something AROUND Wednesday.
BBchevro,
While I am hopefully optomistic{but not holding my breath}, How is it like getting all this stuff done down under? Here they want a permit to fart.

It's pretty much the same here - and you get the same run around where you get shuffled from one department to another.

When we were looking to buy our current home, I wanted to make sure that we would be allowed to build a suitably sized detached garage - all that I could get from them was "just submit your plans after you purchase the property".

Fortunately that is when I discovered private " building approval consultants" - for a fee, they do all the dealings with the council and what they say is legally binding.

It added cost to the build, but IMO it was money well spent.

It's slow here at work this morning, so I checked me emails and found one from the city.
I opened it up and started following the link to my online account.
I got FRICKING APPROVED!!!!!!! I can go down Tuesday a.m. and pay for my permit and can start making another wretched mess in the garage.
I keep going back to look at it and make sure I am reading it right and that it hasent changed.

Well...I jumped the gun...AGAIN!!
My application was approved for further REVIEW.
MY HAMB buddy,49Fordpu, commented that this stuff is a test of patience. I told him on this kind of test I usually get an "F".:D
At least I can add a couple more paydays to the budget first.

While I await impatiently for my permit to go through, I have stayed busy. I re-arranged my south wall with the peg board and osb from other projects that were no longer needed. The peg board had been on the wall where the new garage door is {hopefully} going to be. The osb board is from the collapsible dog kennel I had built before. I put the pegboard on the top half of the walls and the osb on the lower half. When I figure out how to post something besides thumbnails, sideways/upside down pictures. I promise to post them up. Not too sure what I just did different but at least it worked.

I got an email from the city late last week. They would like to have the "spec's" for the building to make sure the new garage door won't collapse the structure. No problem, I still have my copies of the original blue prints with all that on them.
Now, I just need to run them in to them. Work has me scheduled for the next six days straight. THAT'S SIX DAYS MORE I HAVE TO WAIT FOR MY PERMIT!!!! AAAAARRRRRGGH!
Yep...failing my patience test miserably.

Tuesday the 6th, I FINALLY got a day off and took my original blueprints downtown so they could be scanned into "the system" and sent to the appropriate places for approval. Brenda, the "application specialist", has been very helpful. She said since the plans were approved once before, there SHOULD be no problems. I have given up on the idea this process will be quick.
However...I FEEL much better now that I gave up hope. :D I may get a passing grade on this patience test yet.

I have some tools and stuff in a shipping container for 12 years now, since I have seen them!!, can't wait to finish this house.
Love your loft, that's something I don't have....yet!

It's going to cost me $150, but, it's going to really PISS OFF the nasty new next door landlord who wouldn't give me an easement. She threatened to turn me in to the city if "You even think about it with out a permit". I'm NOT telling her I have one till after the job is completed.{Aint I a little stinker?} She makes the wicked witch of the west look like Mother Theresa! Thank goodness she lives out of town and rents the place out. THEY are nice folks!

That's really great news RR - and I like your way of thinking (in regards to the wicked witch of the west ...or is that "east").

It's Tuesday the 5th and I have paperwork!!! I also had a pick-up had with lumber in it. I used structural adheasive to hold the p/t sill plate to the floor. I cut my 2x6 wall studs just long enough that I had to knock them into place with a stout hammer. This put enough pressure on the glue below the will plate the glue oozed out from under a little bit. I ran my finger over it and now it looks like a bathtub calk seam.
On my next day off, I will post the pics.
My son moved back home for a while, and works 4 am to noon. AND THE COMPUTOR IS IN HIS ROOM!

Here is what I have gotten, so far. In the first pic, I have removed the trim board from the frame so I can measure the siding thickness. {Yeah, I had forgotten}. In the second pic, I broke out the W.M.C., weapons of mass construction! The third pic is the pressure treated sill plate. I couldn't find a hammer drill to put down anchor bolts with. So, I used a full caulking tube and half of contractors adheasive. That sucker aint going anywhere! After the sill plate went down, I fitted my 2x6 wall studs. The very bottom pic is the studs all in and the garage door closed. I measured them out on 16 inch centers like the rest of the wall so it doesn't look TOO out of place. At least until I cover them up with cabinettes or pegboard. The very last picture, the wall with the Pennzoil sign, is where the new garage door is going to go. The gray board on the saw horses gives an idea as to how wide it will be.

August 1st 1958 I was unleashed upon the world. Since I will be working on that day, the wife and kids decided to birthday me today instead. I had been talking about getting a small laptop/notebook for the garage. Well... guess what I am typing on. Ahhh...I better tell you 'cause you'll never guess.{heavy sarcasm there} I got me a shiney new Acer Chromebook! Yup, using it RIGHT NOW!!!!!
Now to find some millenial to teach me how to down load, file, and post pics. I guess I should stop kicking and screaming. I have entered the 21st century!:lol:

Well done, you are only 3 years older than me, I am doing the same thing. My kids reckon that my most used expression is " what is this thing doing now?". Then you get to that age old add...."they changed the question when I just learned the answers"
HBTY, enjoy.

Okay, I haven't been able to get a handle on the "Google Chrome" laptop thing yet. So I kicked the kid out for a while to use the old computer. First picture is the header beam for the new door opening. Second picture is after I got it up in place and secured.{heavy Sumbitch too!} Third pic is the contractor taking ANOTHER coffee break. Real hard getting this guy to work for any length of time.:D Fourth picture is the contractor{me} installing the trim piaces around the opening. pic #5 is the re-used garage door just before the only wind of the day came up and blew the door over onto my sawhorses and destroyed my coffee cup. it was full too.

In picture 5 above, you can see the 10 lb. weights we used to roll the garage door around to the front of the garage. We did it "Egyptian"style, rolling it over the first one, then putting the second one in front, roll it, move a weight, roll it, move a weight, etc.

Since the openings are the same size, I re-used the vapor barrier and siding from the new door install to close up the old door turning it back into a wall. I also reused all of the door track and hardware. After some paint touch up, you can hardly tell it was there.

Then I had to redo the inside. The southwest corner of the garage always catches the afternoon sun and turns into a radiator for that corner. I had put the peg board up first and nailed it to the old door header on the top edge. BEFORE I decided to insulate that corner. DUMB! Good thing its flexible enough to bend out from the wall and get behind it to work. I just LOVE making extra work for myself. I also installed a couple more outlets on the wall. A four gang above the bench and a single next to the bench where the grinder/wire wheel will go. Next payday I plan on going through all the **** on that shelving, box, rickety-assed, p.o.s., and building a some real shelving in that corner. That thing is made of 30+ year old MDF board and should have turn back into sawdust years ago.

Man, that looks so good. You must be so pleased with yourself, and deserve to be!
Looks really good. Made me so happy to see it, that I am going out to the garage and work on my series2 air bag mounts for my pickup.
I suppose this is a belated birthday present to yourself, hey!

A stroke of luck that the wind came up and ended up breaking the contractor's coffee cup. Maybe you'll get more work out of him now! :lol_hitti

But seriously, great work and progress. The door looks great and worth the effort. You have a really nice space there.

I doubt it.:)
More upset about loosing the contents than the cup. It was fresh, hot, and full.

Have you ever had one of "those" days, and it stretched out for a week...or more? The speedo stopped working in the dailey Buick, along with the turn signals, power steering pump. I managed to forget my phone was in my pocket when my granddaughter said "Lets go swimming P-paw!" I didn't remember where it was till it was vibrating out its final death throws in my pocket. The new phone "should" arrive tomorrow and I can take pictures of the back fence rebuild. I got the turn signal to work, but, when I signal for right hand turns my 3rd brake light comes on. new switch is $120. Power steering pump got replaced a month ago and started making the same bearing noise again. Thankfully this time it was just the pulley wasn't tight enough on the shaft. An extra thick lockwasher was all it took. The speedometer cable is got me puzzled. I put a new cable into the housing and it worked fine for last night and this morning. Note the past tense of "work" here. I yanked the new cable insert out and it's broke in the same exact place as the old one. I will pick up a new cable and housing at work tomorrow. By then my new phone/camera/pocket computor should be here and I can take and post some pic's of the new projects as they happen.
wish me luck. I need all I can get right now.

Gee, my DW just read your post and says to me..."he is your double ganger, same type of luck. Works like a bull and get a turtle pace done."
Keep going, it worth it.
BTW, Are you ready to learn how to use the new phone?, have you organised one of the kids to get it set up for you, that's what I do.

Aw **** Terrick! The phone saga continues! The insurance covered the phone for only $49 bucks. And then the NEW ONE took a dump after only 2 days! I got phone number 3 today. It was covered 100% but, I am waiting till my next day off and going to the Verizon store to get "professional help". If this one goes bad, I might need "professional help" of another sort!:D
