i think my thermostat has gone bad, it doesn't seam to be calibrated anymore. i was thinking on just getting a new one. it has a honeywell stat right now, any recommendations for a replacement? thanks
I went with Nest and it's super easy to use compared to the other programmable thermostats.
The Nest version 2 is really afforable right now, under $200.
Be careful and don't get the super cheap ones like I did in the beginning. I got the cheapest Honeywell one for like $20 and it kept on blowing my 24V transformer. Took me a while to debug the problem.
Heres the brand I normally use from the supply house, they work just as good as any other normal stats out there.
The high tech stats are just more complicated/easier to break down in my book anyway.
The regular non programmable digital H/C stat costs me $29.00 and change.
The heat pump version is programmable and costs me like $51.00
Also something else to consider. If you aren't in the garage every day, and don't want to heat it up much past freezing, you can get what's called a "low temp" thermostat. It will go down to 35F. That's what I put in my shed. It's not programmable, though.
I am extremely happy with this one. Honeywell has a great app and online interface. WiFi is key because programming it for certain hours is not good unless you are in there on a constant schedule, otherwise you might heat it when you are not in there. I don't think the Nest knows either when you have truly variable schedules. WiFi lets you turn up the heat before you go in anytime. Sometimes I go in the shop at 7AM, other times at 6 PM, WiFi let's me adjust it before i get to the shop anytime. Keep it at 40-50 and then crank it to 65 from home. Also sends you alerts if it drops below a setpoint so if your are away from home and there is a problem that could freeze your stuff costing you money, then you can address it with the alert. It's nice when it's -30 to crank the heat from your bed before you get up in the morning with your phone or tablet. Right now I was drying something at 70F in my shop, I forgot to turn it back down to 50 and it's freezing cold outside - I'm on the couch, wallah, I just changed the shop to 50 on my computer.
