Re: My Atlas 412A Lift install/review

Thanks drives, and no it was not an impulse buy. A lot of thought before hand as I had to move the 2 post lift to another bay as this is the only bay big enough to accommodate it. I'll post up some pictures of the lift swap if I can find some.

Re: My Atlas 412A

There was nothing wrong with what I said. Her Cuda doesn't have any rear end adjustments. It only a front end alignment on her car. What others read into it is out of my hands.

Minds like sewers. That's what it is. :D Good job you didn't mention giving the chassis a thorough going over.

On the plus side, you're not worrying about your thread not generating interest any more. Probably not quite the type of interest you intended, mind. :D

Nice lift Dan, do alignment jobs make up the bulk of your work or is it just another feather in your cap to offer to your customers?

Re: My Atlas 412A Lift install/review

Not the bulk of it Mark. But we do a l lot of front end work here (ball joints, tie rods, etc.) and had to farm out the alignments. Losing time and money. Either driving the customers vehicles to another shop of telling them they needed to. Most of our customers did not like the idea of having to take the time for another "alignment appointment" and would request that we had it done for them. Well sending two men out to deliver the vehicle and then again to retrieve it got kind of expensive. So I made the choice to offer the service right here. It has been a blessing in disguise. Not only saving time but also adding revenue to the garage. I should have done it years ago.

So you found what was intended to be "my garage thread" but what I found was a lot of members that took it as I was bragging about a lift that few would have any use for. So I did not continue with other projects that are done at my shop. Most of the guys here talk of their garage projects. And it's fun to follow along, but it seems that when it's what one does everyday for a living, it doesn't carry any interest. Rightfully so I guess. So when you and Lyndon and the other blokes ask about my thread, this is the problem I face with having one that is "garage related". I hope that made sense to you......aka...TTS(the thread starter):lol_hitti

Re: My Atlas 412A Lift install/review

It makes good sense to do as much as you can in house (my place of employment does that as much as we can - for the same reasons that you stated).

I don't see the thread as bragging Dan, as I was reading it I thought "this would be a good start to Dan's garage thread". (hint, hint)

It's a huge lift for sure, but you have a very legitimate reason for needing it - you want to show off. :lol_hitti (just kidding).

It took me a long time to start a "garage" thread - simply because I didn't think that there would be enough material to interest people (then I had the the idea to pad it out with various side projects).

On the other hand, you have lots of stuff happening in your garage - so you have no excuse my friend.

Cheers mate.

It'll continue tomorrow.:bounce:

Yeah Dan, don't let it get you down, post more. The title may hurt your views but once people see you have more to post they will start posting as well. If I started a thread called "Singer 211 install and review" I bet there would only be me and two posters. One with a question about plumbing and the other would be a smart ***.

I don't know much about a lift but I am interested in what you have going on up there.

Re: My Atlas 412A Lift install/review

Last week I had a "simple wheel bearing/ hub assembly replacement." Normally that job should take between 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on how bad it has rusted onto the knuckle. This one was a little more of a challenge as it had to be cut off before a new one could be installed.

IMG_20160304_073407625.jpg

First I had to cut a piece of the hub so I could get the cut off wheel close enough to split the bearing. Then C/V shaft. I was hoping that I would be able to save the C/V shaft, but that didn't happen.

IMG_20160304_081927774.jpg

Just another problem we face up here in the "rust belt". And just to let you know, I did heat the thing until it was glowing red and it still wouldn't budge. You can see the chisels behind it inducing a lot of pressure to no avail.

Yesterday one of the projects was to get the seat covers off my Delta 88 so they could be sent out to Nines, who is going to make me some new ones. Here's the beginning of the project. It'll be months before there'll be an update on the seats.

DLC: nice idea. take one of your ongoing threads and give it a new name and move it to garage gallery. :D

I'll check in and see what the pro is doing at his shop and hopefully learn a few things. GOD knows I might even ask a few questions too.

cheers and have a great day

I am glad I live down south where we don't have rust like that.

:lol_hitti:lol_hitti Good one Strouty. It seems to be the norm on everything I have to work on. But in a few, I'm going to show you guys the clean side of what I get to do.

Drives, I can't take all the credit for that. Strouty made a great point about lifts and how they seemed to kill a thread. So a thread about lifts was doomed before it started. And BBchevro, Lyndon, and the other blokes have been onto me to get a thread up. So............

Well welcome aboard. Show these guys your "little shop" and some of the "small" stuff that you guys do in it.

That lift has made life a lot easier since we installed it for sure.

You sneaky devil you :lol_hitti - adding your thread to the bottom of your sig line, then sneaking up on me like that. I'm glad to see you posting in here. And if I lived closer (OK - a freakin' lot closer) I'd be down to see you in a heart beat. The things I could get you to do on my poor Falcon....... Don't go there girlfriend! :willy_nil

Great to see you updating this as your "garage thread". And to have a lift like that - you lucky, lucky bar steward..... :lol_hitti

Lyndon

Thanks Lyndon. You are one of the first to notice that "slight of hand" trick I pulled. I can thank you guys for forcing my hand on a garage thread.

I'll try to keep things going here as I must remember to take pictures of some of the projects that happen in the shop and around the house. Stop in as often as time allows.

I hope some of the things I do around here won't bore you poor folks too badly, but if they do, please feel free to critique. I am no Bob or Lyndon when it comes to writing a good story. I was never a good story teller.

As you would have noticed from my thread - you can waffle on in your own thread about any bleedin' thing you want to. Heavens knows it's been ages since I ventured near a post about "garage" type things. :dunno:

But Geeeeeesuuus I'd like to

Go your hardest my friend - just don't do much of that "merican" lingo - us blokes in the back lots might not understand ya'll...... :lol_hitti :willy_nil :dunno:

Oh, and that picture taking thing is what I have problems with too - wife thinks I've gone loco sometimes I'm pretty sure (rushing into the house in the middle of a job - cussin' and cursin' because I forgot the "swear word deleted" camera"). . . .

Lyndon
Did I just say "ya'll"...... Someone get me another drink! :headshake

Thought some of you might like to see some of my back yard. It takes about 3 hours to mow the lawn (on the rider). This is looking south.

East view.

North toward my shop

Not really anything to see toward the west.

I got two of them Don. It was a package deal. Man they don't give those things away. Mine are just 6K. But make the lift a lot more versatile. Makes it easier when doing a alignment.

Thats why I got the platform, figured I could always add the jack down the road. Hoping that some day they might go on sale, or I win the lottery. :lol_hitti

Anyway there are to many other things the garage needs first and the only way I can justify the cost is for equipment maintenance. Bought to much equipment last year and will see what this year brings.

I'll see if I can find a picture. We used to have a above ground pool where the raised beds are now. And the deer used to come and drink out of it. I have some pictures of it somewhere.

When I was shopping around for the lift, most of the rolling jacks were going for around $2k. That's a lot to add to the cost of the lift when you want 2 of them. But I got lucky and it seemed like Derrick Weaver and Greg Smith were having a price war. And I got the benefit of it.

DLC: was that a current picture today? looks like you have Seattle's weather or if not today at least I know it doesn't snow all year round in Maine now.

love the yard, shop and probably the house too because it looks like you have a covered porch maybe with the railings I see. just curious what you grow in the raised beds or does it just end up being food for the deer?

cheers and have a great weekend.

Lyndon: your posts are very entertaining Y'all. :bounce:

Strouty's dead on. It's not from today. Lilacs won't be in bloom until the end of May.

Yeah nines, pretty quite around here. It's a dead end road about 4 miles out of town.

I'm going to get up some pictures here of a old ceramic stone I'm getting mounted. It was used in a optical lab years ago. They used it to bevel the edges of lenses. It's real cool. Check back in a few days and I should have it posted (or a least some of it)

Here's the start of the ceramic stone project. I got the stand from Tinker Rick. He saved it from going to the scrap yard. It's a perfect fit, and will give me a place to mount a motor.

20160325_135836.jpg

It's got a water feed tank with spicket as well as a drain hole in the base. I'm not sure why it has the other set of pulleys on it. Maybe some type of auto feed feature. There is a truing stone built into the back of it.

Thank 1/2. Appreciate the compliment, but it'll be hard to be half as interesting as most of you guys lives that I've butted in on lately. But with all the knowledge that is shared between Rod, Mark, Lyndon, Andrew, Gerrard, Terrick, Lamar, ........the list is long and I'm not leaving out names that I didn't drop, just would make this post go on for a while. So I'll conclude that it's most of the GJ members( it's quite a group we have here).....Anyway, the talent here is incredible (maybe because most of us are old f%$ks!)
I've learned so much from reading what others are doing. I know!:rolleyes2 Get to the point.....Gee, I guess that was the point!! You guys are talented and in comparison, I find my projects a little lower on the scale of interesting. But I will continue to use this as my garage thread and thank you Steve. You have my total respect as a human being. You subscribing to my thread comes as a cherished and humbling moment. I have followed you(stalking from afar) since I joined this site....you:rocker:

I'm loving the fact that you're "garage" is on here. Loved the view of the yard. You have a great outlook.

Thanks Lyndon, I'm better now.

I will post my "boring" projects and let you guys be the judge of their value.

I am excited to get that ceramic wheel working again even though I don't have a real use for it. It's just a neat old stone and I'm sure it will put a very nice edge on a pocket knife.

Thanks for the compliment, I've lived here 20 years now. I'll try and find some old photos of the back yard when we first bought the place. There was no back yard. It was a wet overgrown field. Good thing I cleared it years ago as I don't think I'd have the ambition to do it now.

Dan, I'm so glad I stopped in. The hoist is very cool and everything, but it wasn't interesting to me, so I didn't stay long the last time I visited. But the pics of the yard, the shop, some of the toys outside, and the stone, they give me a better sense of who you are . Very nice and very pretty yard. When you get a chance, if you don't mind, how about a stroll around the place? Enjoy your weekend.
