I saw a thread on a grinder that went **** and saw others recommend finding old block grinders. I didn't want to hijack that thread so started this one to ask if this grinder listed for sale (see pic) is worth $40 they are asking. Not much detail but he does say it works and I like that it was made in the USA. What do you guys think?

Other image... Looks rough but if it runs I imagine it can be cleaned up.

My Dad bought one of those used, forty years ago. It's the only grinder he's ever owned. Uses it at least once a week. Think he paid 20-25 bucks for it back then. That thing has sharpened a thousand miles of lawn mower blades.

If you need or want a grinder then I think that is a fair deal. I have one and it is a great working unit, very smooth

Ive been looking at those CM grinder for over a year and that's the best price I've seen. The condition of it still look in very good. I have seen much worst and cost double or more!

It's a steal for $40, 1/2hp.

Thanks for the response guys. One more question - are the wheels interchangeable (meaning could I take one off and add, say a wire or polishing wheel for example)? I'd do some research on it but I can't read the model number in the blurry pic.

Yes the wheels are interchangeable. That one looks to be missing the right side tool rest, and both of the eye shields. Looks like it has the gooseneck for the lamp in the second pic too. It does have the quenching tray too - bonus.

1/2 HP is nice - I have the same sized one...definitely some great power.

$40 good, try for $25, but buy it if it runs smoothly!

Good luck!

Good deal, 2x$20's go get it.

In case you haven't seen.....

Thanks! That thread (and the new grinder that went "****" thread) are what prompted me to look on Craigslist. As I'm nearing the end of garage remodel I'm looking at the tools I don't yet have but want to get. I looked at the new grinders but like the idea of getting an older, solidly built, made in USA grinder. I'll give the guy a call and see what happens.

I've been on the lookout for quite some time for an old C man block grinder. I would gladly give $40 for that one.

I say go for it.

Very good deal IF it has the too rests, eye shields, wheel covers. If it has the cooling water tray, burn rubber getting there! If it also has the gooseneck light, wire money first!!

I had planned on going over to pick it up this afternoon after my dental appointment. Things did not go well and currently I am laying on the couch with numb tongue and a sore mouth. There are many things you do not want to hear when you're at the dentist office, however "we're not sure what that is", followed by "we need to refer you to a specialist right away" must top the list! Apparently it's not a cavity (he dug around enough to know that)... 45 years with only a few cavities then BAM! - something "unusual". Anywho, I may go over tomorrow and pick it up. Right now I'm going to have some chocolate cake. :D

Take mower blades with you when you go to look at it.. It would be a good test that the unit will work and not bog down under load. Even if you don't buy it, you'll have sharp mower blades for next spring.. :lol_hitti

Anyone know what gauge the wire is inside these units? I need to rewire mine.

Are you talking the power cord or the actual armature windings? The way you say "inside" leads me to believe you are talking about the armature.

I bought it. Settled on $30, which I felt was a good deal. I'll try and get the back off tonight or tomorrow and get some pics of the wiring.

$30? YOU ****. Did they have the missing rest or eye guards floating around by chance?

I am talking about the wires connecting the relay, switch, etc.

I'd put some good 14ga in there and call it a day.

Hey! I finally got my first "You ****"! Yay!

No, didn't have the parts. I'll see if I can find something compatible. There's a guy on here that refurbs them so I'll reach out and ask him where to get spares.

The missing tool rest will be super simple to make. I think they actually still sell the full plastic eye shields. You got all the important needed parts so

The shields are still available? I'm looking for a set for mine.

I'm pretty sure the all plastic ones are. I've been working on a die to make some of the older metal ones w/ glass. Because ya' know. Metal eats plastic for breakfast. :lol_hitti

Look through the block grinder thread, I think the shields are mentioned a few times.

Actually, I believe mine has 1 of the metal framed glass guards. Let me know if you do come up with a way to make replacements...........or if they are available elsewhere.

Can you post a pic/model # of your grinder?

67Carl, now that you have the grinder home, can you post a model number and MFG date? I think that one takes the all plastic guards.

I haven't had a chance to open it up yet but during an internet search found a pic of the internals. I'll post a pic below.

For some reason I can only post one picture at a time using my iPad. I will post another pic in a seperate post below with the model number. I didn't see a manufacturing date anywhere on the outside. Is it located internally?

Here's yer second:

YOU ****!!!

Awww, now I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy! Mele Kalikimaka!
