That LR is looking good - nice job. Wow, that was a lot of work getting it back together! I hope it drives okay when you get it on the road - you're almost there.

Well ....had it for a spin. Its a tale of two halves .

%255BUNSET%255D.jpg

Tested the brakes , they are sharp.... Then reversed out the drive. Steering was a bit stiffer than i remember but i have gone from a 17 inch wheel to a 14.

Reversed out took down the road engine pulled well , and smooth for a land rover , the gear box was a bit vague but it always was, 1 - 2 too some finding but 3/4/5 all good and reverse was easy.

Braked and went to do a 3 point turn in the horses field. - no danger started to reverse and turn - engine went to max rpm and lots of smoke . I thought she was running away on me, managed to get it off , straightened it up and turned the key , idled normal.

Started to reverse and it went wild again.

Id only gone an caught the throttle cable in the lower steering uj as i hadnt clipped it up to the bulkhead out the way, and it was fine for minor manuvers but as soon as i went to a 3 point turn it wound the cable tight till the throttle jammed at the guvernor. Once the cable snapped normal service was rsumed and the steering went back to normal.

Lucky no damage done and a new throttle cables on the way to be routed correctly.

Somewhat relieved.

That thing was a piece of junk. I would of had it towed away! You however get the mantown award for saving it from the dead. I have honestly seen better trucks in the junk yard! The work you did was amazing! If you were closer I would hire you to fix my stuff. Keep up the good work!

cheers guys , junk it maybe but it was my junk....

that L-R has been around with us for a while - and now it should be around a while longer. yes i probably should have had it towed but i wanted to learn new things - i drive a desk durin the day and im a firm believer in that if you dont use your hands you lose your hands.

it has character and charm - and yes i might swear at it when I'm up to my elbows in it trying to fix it ....but its still much more fun to drive ANYWHERE than any of my other cars.

hopefully get all the floor pans bolted in proper , get the passengers seat in , and the fuel tank breather in this weekend - after ive changed the drive shaft seal on the mrs' car - the oil patch is getting bigger where she parks, its almost more profitable to drill my drive than in the north sea !

I gave this thing a full filters and fluids service the other day as well as doing the valve clearances. Its like a church mouse now in comparison and doesnt smoke at all - before it would smoke when cold - the oil was like tar the diesel filter was mostly water and the air filter externally was orange and extremely built up with dust/dirt/sand.... inside at least was clean.

got rid of that chequer plate tail gate though , this ones beaten up and bent but it looks the part much more than that chequer plate abomination.

still not dared take it back on the road yet though.

Picked up some new wolfs on bf goodrich muds and a set of light guards,

Interiors done , radio and speakers fitted all round , heated screen fitted and switch mounted into dash propper and a boost gauge in the empty slot.

exteriors near done and gas bonnet struts fitted.

Timing belt this weekend and new manifold gaskets .

But i can safely say its more of a scalded cat compared to the lumbering behemoth it was before.... Has 1/3rd more power and significantly less weight. Gonna have to throw some weight in the back gonna be a handfull in the wet.

Fingers crosse my welding doesnt let me down on that :)

Also 213 pounds for fully comp agreed value all mods declared - they did get a hardon about me fitting the engine though. Not what they would have said if i told them i built the whole car......

Was on 205 /80 r16 on disco steels

Now on 235/85r16 bfg mud terrains on white wolf rims

You can squeeze much bigger under there but these were an original option box on the order for and i prefer the look to massive fat floaters. Id have put on 7.50x16 if i could have got good quality tires for a good price and not just remoulds.

This one ;)

Just heading out to get started on the timing belt and inlet/exhaust gaskets .

Woulda been better to do them on the floor on the bare block but as i bought the engine untested i wanted to get a baseline of a running engine to start with instead of ******* with it and then finding it didnt work.....was it something i did or was i sold a duffer ;)

Busy weekend.

image.jpg

Drive member and hub bearing out

image.jpg

Hub off.

image.jpg

Pitted Swivel off.

image.jpg

Repairing swivel with epoxy . They only have to hold one shot grease now not ep90 oil and replacement swivels today aint all that

image.jpg

Stripped both sides

Rebuilt both sides with new bearings , seals , disks , cv joints and fresh oil and grease.

image.jpg

Did timing belt - previous owner did it with paint marks, the cam was out by 2 teeth and 1 out on the FIP , starts much better now. Was still smokey and whistling on boost

So next up

image.jpg

Exhaust off , oil feed and return off , turbo off, exhaust manifold off , inlet off , all of which was easy as none of it was torqued and many of the more difficult and hidden bolts and nuts were missing completely

image.jpg

This gasket is about as much use as a cornflake packet. Number 1 and 4 were split and the hidden inlet bolts were missing totally and the top nuts were there in spirit only.

Replaced it with a new one , rebuilt it all and took for a spin. Like a shiny new pin !

Happy at last , good chance itll pass emissions now. And the steering works.

Now to get to the rest of the list i have,

This is a great thread. Your work is amazing! Esp considering the starting condition, extra especially considering you did it outside. Really, really great stuff. Best of luck with your inspection.

my garage is a shoe box(or rther a toolbox) and i have understanding neighbours at the moment ....... they dont mind so long as i pack up my noise before their kids go to bed and my garden doesnt look like a scrappies (ie there is progress and it doesnt stagnate)

for the most part they have expressed great interest in the progress - most of the menfolk "wish i could do something like that" followed by their wives jabbing them in the side :d

couple of the neighbours already do similar - one has an old 70s ford and another as an old american open top classic ford tractor

aye its hugely motivational......

i mind the boost when i got the 200tdi started for the first time.....

then the next step was to get it rolling forwards sand back wards....

then the brakes....

then i took it for a drive - and it **** on me. i was down and bummed till i saw it was my mistake and not a fucked engine.

then i spent a bit of time actually setting it up and making it as road legal as possible and took it for a spin up the track - it drives like a new landy - tight and precise (as landies are) most of the landies you drive now esp old ones are shagged out slack worn as **** things that are horrible to drive - and mines was no different before i rebuilt it .. its hopefully got a new lease of life now !

Nice job getting it back on the road - it looks like it will do the job for you. Good luck with your inspection.

I liked the way you fixed the pitted swivel with epoxy - I wouldn't have thought of that. That's something I'll have to try. Does the swivel hold a lot of weight? Is there much abrasion on its surface during use, or does the grease prevent that? The epoxy coating might benefit from an additive like silica to toughen the surface, or maybe graphite powder.

The swivel takes all the weight on the front wheels, its an odd way to have a steerable driven front wheel, but its a solution from the late 1940's when it had to contain a universal joint and gear oil, as it was before cv joints. Its one of those things that have stuck even though it would not be done like that now.

while it does hold all the weight - it only holds the weight on the roller bearing and the railko bush at the top where the hub is mounted too and the bolts at the back.

the actual sealing surface that i have epoxied the chrome on is only a seal surface.

MOT tomorrow....bit nervey to say the least.

Well it failed.....

But very minimally.

Rear fog light didnt work .....- it did prior to test. How ever if you held the switch in it did work , so ive stripped it down and cleaned the contacts. Working grand,

The headlights are dim .... He reckoned the earth , i think the bulbs are just tired , trying to get my hands on new light units to put bulbs in tonight .... Stupid sealed beams.

And one single plastic clip on the brake line on the chassis leg....

Ill live with tht given the **** state it was in.

over the moon mate..

its been 5 years since it was last on the road according to previous mot docs - december 2010 was when it expired :s

and it feels so tight almost new car like - even has the obligatory draft from where the drivers door doesnt quite fit right against the seal.....

the lights were the earth was hooked up to their aftermarket relay loom wrong - under what convention is blue an earth when you have red black and blue...... DOH

500 miles in

after a slight hickup where the starter solenoid died the day after mot.... DAMNIT

its averaging 28mpg(thats a uk gallon) brim to brim on the first 2 tanks of fuel.

goes like a stabbed rat from 0-40 - does 70 on the motorway eventually and still wants to pull.

turns you inside out on braking ..... had to do one emergency stop as no one seems to accept that i can actually make progress in this... and pull out on me as if im doing 25mph.....

Need to change the rear UJ's and an oil seal/bearing on the transferbox... that can wait till after the wedding.

Chuffed to bits with how its turned out. Just treated it to a crisp shiny new box of tools to bolt into the bed incase of future issues :D

getting married next friday.

Its been a while since ive been about - works just been heavy as hell.

18 months later still going strong - just been for its second MOT after12 months on the road and 6 months standing as i was working abroad - but it sailed through.

Goes to show do it right first time and it'll stand you well. My only issues over the year were one bearing in the steering column gave up and my fuel sender gave up.

Needs a paint underneeth to keep rust at bay and all trans fluids changing as a precaution before i stick it back on the roads as its spent alot of time last winter wading through deep water during floors providing sandbags and aid to those in flood stricken areas locally.

going to try floor paint this time i think. The chassis black i used wasnt very impressive last time.

:shocking: Yeah loving your work, man. Btw, I've got a 2002 Eurovan over here in Minnesota, land of salt-on-the-roads-in-the-winter. It's starting to rust pretty much everywhere, including around the windshield. You guys have a link to DIY rust fixing? Don't think I have the courage to try painting, but who knows.

I've found these. No idea on their quality:

http://www.instructables.com/id/repairing-a-rust-hole-in-a-car/

https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-repair-a-rust-hole-in-your-car

Urgh bondo.

A light skin of p38 over some panel beaten welding is ok but what you have posted is a bodge good and propper.

That rust will be back from under the bondo quickly

Cut rust out and weld in good metal but if painting worrys you I guess weldings out the question ?

A bondo bodge will get you through Inspection if it's non structural over here not sure about in the states.

Yeah, no holes in the metal, just "rusty" looking. Maybe I should just sand it to shiny metal and spray some primer on it. Sigh…it's really far outside of my area of expertise (graphic design, lol).
