Probably not what you were thinking. This is a tool/jig call it what you will. I had never heard of this before today it likely has been around for 100s of years.

Works well for rectilinear figures - for curves, requires some interpolation.

I use them on occasion for boats and other irregular shaped things. In boat building they are more commonly called joggle sticks. The concept is that the stick will only fit on the outline one way so you can recreate the shape on the new panel that you are making. I have also used them for counter tops.

I'm not a pro and home construction isn't my area so many of these simple tricks are new to me. This is yet another obvious once you see it sort of trick.

I saw a video somewhere on fitting a skirt board for a stairway. I imagine the tick stick could work, too. I'll have to consider both, and see which one is faster/easier. I need four skirt boards, and have room limitations top and bottom. Although my stairs are fairly consistent, I can't just 'go to the numbers'.

Yes, I work in construction for decades now and it always amazes me how much more there is to learn.

I first saw them used by master boat builder friend in the 1960s. He called them tick sticks. Thanks for posting.

A lot of these sorts of "tricks" are just baffling, but this one is simple and makes sense immediately.
