I use them on occasion for boats and other irregular shaped things. In boat building they are more commonly called joggle sticks. The concept is that the stick will only fit on the outline one way so you can recreate the shape on the new panel that you are making. I have also used them for counter tops.

That is very cool. How have I not heard of this?

Now, should I get the Snap On or the Harbor Freight stick? :) Just poking fun at another thread.

I saw that video last night. I've watched a lot of her videos and really like them. Rather than focus on what the latest tool can do she is showing how to be clever about using basic tools. I'm not a pro and home construction isn't my area so many of these simple tricks are new to me. This is yet another obvious once you see it sort of trick.

Yeah, that rules. Im definitely going to be using this in the future.

Shes good too, way less annoying then most the bearded dorks on YT.

I saw a video somewhere on fitting a skirt board for a stairway. I imagine the tick stick could work, too. I'll have to consider both, and see which one is faster/easier. I need four skirt boards, and have room limitations top and bottom. Although my stairs are fairly consistent, I can't just 'go to the numbers'.

Yes, I work in construction for decades now and it always amazes me how much more there is to learn.

Well dang, that's a new one on me.

A lot of these sorts of "tricks" are just baffling, but this one is simple and makes sense immediately.
