Hi guys,

I'm building my first garage at the end of the month. The concrete has been poured and the walls will be built from timber.

The timber will be built as individual panels like a 'kit house' and nailed together after placing them in their final position.

My walls will be made up as follows (internal to external);

1. 9mm plasterboard.
2. Tyvek Housewrap.
3. 4" x 2" Stud wall with insulation between studs.
4. sheathing like OSB - What thickness do I need?
5. Tyvek Housewrap again.
6. thin battons providing an air/ water gap.
7. softwood cladding (T&G siding).

What does everyone think? What would you guys recommend I change, if anything?

I'm a heating engineer, not a builder so any help would be appreciated.

thanks, jimbo

My timberframe panels are built like this (inside to outside):

-4x8 sheetrock
-6" thick 4x8 styrofoam
-4x8x9/16 OSB

each 4x8 panel is nailed & glued to the outside of 6x6 posts that have 6x6 bottom and top headers...then the entire building is wrapped in Tyvek housewrap & then sided with western cedar siding.

You sure it isn't 7/16 osb? That is most common, I have never heard or seen 9/16 osb before. The most common we use is 7/16 (walls), 19/32 (roofs), and 23/32 (floors). Of course I actually prefer plywood, but OSB is inexpensive and some of the new stuff (advantech) is actually pretty darn good stuff.
