Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

Time to move on from this one. Once again lost my shorts but another not so much of a Project has been found. Details as it happens. A lifelong dream vehicle is about to be acquired . . Stay tuned . . And no I can never leave well enough alone. BIG plans for new project too. Will need a bit of help with how I should go about it. Kind of have a picture in my head but will see how it all works out.

This is the real time warp Ford! Looks like it just rolled out of the showroom. Great work and hope it goes to a good home.

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

I am interested in magic soap. I guess they don't advertise what they would have trouble shipping. I am in upstateNY and wonder if anyone within driving distance would be interested in going in on a shipment?
Timewarp, if you ever find your formula sheet and what you use it on, I'd be interested in it.

I do have the "formula" in my head but its the sheet that tells where you can buy it I cannot find. The "mixes" are above in this thread. Really depends on what one is trying to clean.

Thanks!
For original paint it came out nice. Only non original paint in that pic is white on top of fender. Battery acid left its mark . .

Truck just left a few days ago. Shipped out of state. Guy called and said how happy he was with truck.

No profit in it at all but its gone and time to move on . . He got FREE labor 4 sure.

Can I "HINT" on next couple projects? Just what I need but keep tripping over nice stuff . . LOL

Can one say Low mile "Ramp Truck" ?

How about a 40 something yr old "Wrecker" ?

Goal has been to have a Ford L-M "garage" with a Texaco or Sinclair Theme.

Looks like that is slowly falling into place. It may take me another 5-10 yrs to get there but at least I have a goal? LOL

Just do not ask why more project when I have 3 unfinished ones now.

The "Ramp" & "Wrecker" I hope to not touch until I get the 427 and Eco Projects well on the way.

I have made commitments on both the Ramp & Wrecker so will see if they pan out.

I am good at "dreaming" up projects but not so good at finishing them. LOL

I'm feeling a strong urge to try this soap....

Going on 26yrs of using the mix now.

I did not get a response from place that makes it. Makes me wonder as when you look on the "net" its not available.

I did find a place that would probably ship it tho . .

Great thread:rocker:

Thanks! A LOT more to come.

Always had a fascination on the older BIG trucks. Some of the Current and past projects others have here on GJ really got me thinking more I should just do one. Still would like a cabover some day too. I like the 30's & 40's on those.

I finally bought the paint last week to get shop painted!

Color not close to what the "chip" was but already spent the $$ so that is what it will get. Hope it looks ok. If not I will give it a couple years then re-do.

Would be interesting to get some of the new / corresponding products they offer and compare your "magic" mixing formulas with the products you have been using for years.

Well, So much for wrecker plans.

I have no clue what this thing is worth but bidding is now a bit over what my high bid was.

What is a 1972 Holmes wrecker worth?

I was figuring 2500 with fee's and tax would be a good start. Not sure I really want to have more in it knowing brakes do not work and potential cost of getting it home if I cannot drive it.

I was looking forward to turning it into a working wrecker with FoMoCo
Ford L-M in Ford Blue.

http://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/all,az/auction/view?auc=1066294

I doubt I will have another chance to get a vintage working wrecker that is in my backyard.

Current bidder is a "dealer" we will probably see it on ebay soon for 8500.00

Too bad, that wrecker looks pretty clean. It would have been a good project.

It would have been neat but the wrong year to bid much more than 2500.00

If it were a 1966 or a 1934-56 I would be more interested. Top year would be a
1966.

Oh well, cannot have em' all!

I would rather put the $$ into EcoProject or the '66 427 Project.

Still hoping to do the Ramp Truck anyway. Will not know for another 30 days or so.

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

A few more examples of detail~cleaning.

This was my Original Paint 1965. Super nice original truck but like the 1970 Ranger a bit not so nice under the hood because of battery acid splatter.
Pretty much did same thing to it as this '70.

Not much I cannot clean with a few magic tricks I have found.

As mentioned before it took me nearly 20yrs to find something that would clean like I wanted it to and that was only being short on one product I used that worked pretty well and mixing what I had left of another product and BINGO, wow did it work. So its been another 25yrs perfecting how and what to mix.

DSC01435_zpsa98630a8.jpg

WOW! That's just like my Grandpa's 65. Same color. He owned it from new and had it for 40 years, as he lived to 105. It still exists, but unfortunately I don't own it. Wish that I did.

Have you ever mentioned the magic soap to your drs. ?
Hopefully you are not allergic to one of the chemicals in it.
My father worked with kerosene for 30 years before he became allergic to it and the skin on his hands started blistering and getting raw from it. Once he got away from it his hands healed up, it took a few years with raw hands before he found out. The doctor put a little kerosene on a Band-Aid and taped it to his arm for a week then took it off and found the same reaction. Take care hope all is well.

The 1956 Belair Story:

Way back around 1994 I had a home~made car trailer for sale in the local auto trader (no craigs list or ebay back then) I did not own a computer . .

A guy shows up to look at trailer (its painted red) A guy shows up to look figures it will work for hauling his 1956 Belair around from shop to shop as he was trying to restore it.

At this point he has owned the car for 8yrs already and not making much headway in getting job done.

He likes the trailer but his wife would want it white not red. Think I was selling the trailer for 1000.00. I had never installed fenders on the trailer.

We came to the agreement that if he gave me the 1000.00 for the trailer I would help him paint it along with add fenders to it.

He buys trailer and pics his car up from another shop, pushed it on it has been repainted to the tune of 5500.00. Baking soda blasted first so you know where this is going.

The get car up on trailer and he gets hit home aiming car to his somewhat empty garage.

Trys to coast the car off trailer into garage as car is now moving fast into garage he realizes the shop has disconnected the brakes and it crashes into his toolbox in corner of shop pushing in the right quarter panel and damaging his snapon tool box.

Story continued soon:

:dunno:
Story continued soon ???
I was just getting into it

"SideTrack" is my middle name! LOL

Back to the story which you will find out why its important to this car/build.

Some time after the car was crashed into tool box he called and asked if I was ready to help him paint the trailer and add fenders. We started early on a saturday & sandblasted, built fenders then painted the trailer. Rewired the entire thing. When we were done he asked how much he owed me.

I told him that I promised if he bought trailer I would help him paint and add the fenders no charge. Lets just say we have been great friends since.

He a helicopter pilot for local highway patrol at time now retired but still working a civilian flying job.

He asked if I would be interested in helping repair the quarter panel that was damaged. We started on the quarter panel repair and because the paint was coming off in sheets down to bare metal decided to repaint the entire car.

We had planned on just outside of body re-paint but we soon found out the door jambs were also an issue with paint literally falling off. There was surface rust under everything with primer on top, full of BONDO etc.

We then pulled the body back off frame and found a absolute mess underneath what was done. What was supposed to have been stripped~painted was covered with rust proofing and crappy body work.

It went on the rotisserie from there.

A couple pics on rotisserie. He had found a used rotisserie and we modded it to fit.

The yellow primer is House of Kolor EP2 my all time favorite primer you can no longer buy.

We stripped the entire outside of body to bare metal and sandblasted the firewall and undercarriage. Then primed and sanded primed and sanded until it was like What finger tips!

A Nevada car (where he grew up) the ONLY rust spot was on quarter behind door about the size of a quarter. Nice nice car other than that. It was a real shame some hack got a hold of it and made a mess, we now had to tear it apart and basically start over.

for further reference this '56 belongs to Mel.

Once we got body off the frame I joked to mel I think he needed a upgraded power plant.

He said find me one! I picked up the phone and found a 1995 LT1 out of a wrecked corvette with 20k miles. The next day a saturday we went to look at it and transmission . . The rest is history. We also picked up a disc brake rear axle out of a 1995-95 Z28.

For some reason I have very few pics of this job as it was pretty much a "favor" helping him out and he helping me with my projects. like the Blue '65 Mustang coupe.

I do remember replacing the eyebrows on the fenders but do not recall why. I remember them to be solid so could have been a prior repair.

Did entire job in lead. This appears to be after the replacement and some lead work.

Remember now I have not had any body work training of any kind, this is probably not the "correct" way but how I did it. The trial and error method with lots of "practice". LOL

Started in 1997 and rear section and underneath painted in 1998. Then I moved to a different house, he was putting daughter thru college etc

The doors and front clip was painted in 1999 at my new place . . Those are pics of fenders bare metal. Surprising the paint was still a perfect match.

Because of the LT1 and distributor down in front we modded the core support and front valance to fit the larger radiator vs just putting it in front of core support like everyone else.

We also added A/C, built the headers from scratch as nobody made headers at the time for a LT1 in a 55-57 Chev.

Got a bit carried away with a little headwork and a custom roller cam.

Car side lined and in early 2005 I moved to Spokane. In 2006 Mel moved back to Nevada.

Mel came to Spokane and we discussed having him trailer car there so I could help him finish. But at that point our house was for sale not knowing if and when it would sell with the thought of moving back to Phoenix area. We held off. In April of 2011 The Spokane house sold and we moved into a apartment. After the kids were out of school we made the big move back to phoenix now in a rental house with no room for a project but enough room to keep my most important toys indoors.

July 2013 Mel hauled the '56 down from Nevada and dropped it off at my place hoping we could finish. With my poor health and his busy schedule it has sat for those 8 months. Life gets in the way I guess. With my other projects waiting and another on the way it was hi time we got back on the '56 to finish it up for once and for all.

A pic when it arrived early last July:

IMG_1166_zps40d90c06.jpg

Big day yesterday we dragged it out of the cobwebs into main shop.

It has gotten a few chips, marks and flaws from sitting so many years. Plan is to do the best we can touching up here and there, have the interior done, finish some wiring, A/C, power windows and now that Mel has owned the car for 28yrs and has never got to drive it, do you think its a good time to have him finally realize his dream? I do!

All in all having the paint already 16yrs old it still looks fantastic! Far from perfect but . . . a little scuff a little buff and a bit of MAGIC SOAP.. LOL

Magic Soap does it AGAIN!

Magic soap at its finest hour . . .

48yr old truck and its starting to look - - - -

Removed seat and floor mat. Cleaned seat with a quick shot of magic soap and a rinse. Same with cab floor and Mat.

I do not think the upholstery would look this nice if it were kept in a sealed box for the 48yrs.

A few after & before pics

You keep cleaning on that and the fire dept is going to want it back! Still unreal that it has been unregistered all this time, and you have the original MSO. I guess the AZ MVA will do a double take when they look at that... You'll have to see if they'll let you keep the MSO after processing the paperwork for "historical" posterity..

Its been a while so a few updates for those interested.

The '56 Belair started back in 1997, painted the body back in May 1998. has been taking space in my garage for a year now. Around 2000 the doors and front clip were painted.

Seeing as though Mel has owned car for 28 years and has never driven it down the road we figured it was high time to get back on the project. I need the space to be able to work on the ecoboost project. Main shop is just too small.

A couple pics just prior to paint.

Arizona truck that was restored prob 20yrs ago and a pretty amateur job.

Sat in a storage yard for 12yrs and was getting stuff stolen so it was moved here.

At this point the task is to get it up and running. Drivetrain is from a Late 70's to early 80's Z28. Inside fuel tank looks like blacktop . .

Of course the '56 Belair as it sits now.

'56 Belair HVAC lines. Instead of making hoses for A/C decided to make them solid lines in the very tight quarters.

Great thread!!!

Loved the F250. Someone got a killer deal on that truck. Too bad you lost money on that one; I know where you're coming from. My 70 GTO is for sale for $120k (not a typo!) - best concours restored at the GTO Nationals last year - and I'm taking a BEATING at the selling price.

Anyway, you should think about working on other people's stuff, but by the hour. Lot more lucrative than working on something you own and then selling it, unless you just do a quick clean and retail it.

Anyone make any progress on finding/shipping Magic Soap ingredients?

Instead of clogging up the EcoBoost and 427 Truck project thread thought I would add a few more of the ones I have finished here. See post
1155-1160 In ecoboost thread.

A few more that I was able to finish with a little history.

My 427 Comet from around 1978

It was originally lime frost green. Absolutely perfect original paint but I hated the color.

Stripped it down and painted it black as seen here. My FIRST paint job!

Paint store told me to never paint a car black for my first paint job . . LOL

File0017.jpg

File0016.jpg

After a year or so and wanting a car candy brandywine I stripped it down again and did just that.

I always think my **** is sore from sitting at computer too much. To be honest I think its from kicking myself for ever selling this car!

These photo's were taken on way home from traveling up to Kingman AZ to meet the Hot Rod Power Tour. The Ranchero was mine too. 416 Stroker powered that got 12.0 mpg while my hot rod 427 got 13.5 MPG on same trip. NOT going over 60 mph

427 Comet in 2000. 2 oldest daughters now 19 & 17
