Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

Simply amazing, lots of hard work but it looks great

Thanks! I think I spent more time on Mirrors than planned for entire truck. LOL!

That's a cool project! Nice work!

What compound did you use to buff the windshield?

Thanks! 3m Perfect It II 06086 Pricey but used it on Paint, Glass, Plastic, Stainless, emblems. Amazing stuff. Nothing that I have found will bring out the color in these old baked on enamels and keep them nice. It just does not fade out weeks or months later. I used same stuff on my '65 F250, tried everything else I had used prior and after a few months would fade again. After using this 3m stuff it looked beautiful 3yrs later. The Special wax may also help. This is what I found best on my Boss 302 also.

I use a very very low RPM so pad is barely turning. Not sure how when or why but it works. Maybe 5-10lbs pressure

You are kidding right? That can't possibly be the same truck!:thumb up:
Amazing techniques, skills and results.

Naw, Think its a different truck . . . I had a friend who stopped by today and saw truck in shop and was wondering what happened to the other OLD truck! It was like, no, seriously what happened to the "other" one? LOL!

Right now there is probably 1/2 the hours of what a complete restoration takes.
Complete opposite of a typical car where the paint and body work is the most time consuming. If anyone ever decides to paint this one it will be a total cake~walk. Hard part is done . . .

'65 and the '70 Boss. (I need to look at old pics once in a while to keep me motivated and that I am not so old I can no longer do this)

How much do you think the truck will go for? Looks great already, and while the wheels aren't original, they look good on her. Absolutely loving this thread (and your others!)

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

Looking through all the pics I noticed that there were parts from:
1965 (C5**)
1966 (C6**)
1967 (C7**)
1968 (C8**)
1969 (C9**)
1970 (D0**)
That's quite a range of dates, or were some parts from another vehicle?

I do not care for this tire wheel look either. I do have the original tires and wheels. Original tires are soooo dry rotted
Just do not have $$ to buy new tires and blast and paint the wheels.

Looking through all the pics I noticed that there were parts from:
1965 (C5**)
1966 (C6**)
1967 (C7**)
1968 (C8**)
1969 (C9**)
1970 (D0**)
That's quite a range of dates, or were some parts from another vehicle?

All the parts you are seeing are original to the truck. That is a engineering number or casting number. Carryover for as many years as they could.

So of you look at a date code it could be a C5** but have a late 69 date code to match the truck. (November 1969 Build)

So if in 1965 Ford started to use a certain part it would have a C5** number and it would stay the same until part changed.

You can see they even borrowed the D0ZZ headlight buckets from the '70 Mustang.

If you look closer you will see Ford used some Mercury parts too. Namely the support brace for A/C Compressor.

Truck still has Original Exhaust . .

Some wear and tear items have been replaced but pretty much hard parts are original to truck.

There are also a lot of parts that fit 1970 ONLY. Like the grille surround, grille inserts and many more . .

Edit Add:

I did look back and there are a few parts (distributor~trans from my '65)

The A/C comp bracket Ford borrowed from a 1966 parts bin and parts used from other veh from '65~1970.

3rd digit in part number tells vehicle it was engineered for.

C9AE is 1969 Full Size Ford "A"

C9TE is 1969 Truck "T"

C9ZZ is 1969 Mustang "Z"

C9OE would be "O" Fairlane

In this case Mustang part was D0ZZ or C for 69 D for 70 then 2nd letter actual year

C9 is 69 D0 1970 C5 1965

I really have no clue on value. No doubt I saved another for someone else, typical for me to work for free. Again, I have learned you cannot save them all. Cannot understand why I keep doing it losing money on each and every project.

I do not need any more "practice", whoever ends up with truck will get one smokin' deal! At a reasonable labor rate there is over 20k in labor into truck, I will be lucky to recoup $$ spent less overhead, lights, phone, supplies. Makes me sick really.

Problem is when I realize I will lose $$ AGAIN i keep plugging along doing it the same knowing with each $$ spent I will never see it back. With hours spent on this truck I could have had my 427 truck completed and the Eco Project driving down the road. I guess its time to go crawl back in my hole again . .

Be back in another couple years doing the same thing once again . . Never Learn!

I do not think I want to know how much $$ I spent on this project and want to forget the time spent also . . Not to mention a friend who spent approx 110-120 hrs helping that I have to come up with something to return the favor. No $$ just time . .

And a half dozen or so other friends who pitched in. If I were selling pencils on the street corner for 2.00 per hour I would have made more. Time to go make a sign will work for food . .

Can anyone borrow me a piece of cardboard (burned the rest to keep warm), and a magic marker to make the sign? A ride to the street corner? SPent all my gas money on chasing parts . .

Everyone figures me for the "fix old tractor" type. I have done it but don't make a habit, just takes too long and its a hobby for so many, as soon as the old guy dies the wife says" give me 400$ and I never want to see it again" I know guys buy for 400 work on it for a month, spend 500, sell for 8 and figure they made 4.

Hang on to your shorts . . . .

I am a couple days past on the Magic Soap mix! LOL!

Later this evening will spill the 25yr secret!

I can mix it in my sleep depending what I am cleaning but to try to put that in words a bit difficult. Flat out flunked English in high school . .

Today was supposed to be fire the '70 390 FE but not sure I will get there tonight.

You are hilarious - I love reading your threads! How long you been working on that Eco-swap? Must be years now? The 390 fe build us like crack to me! I have one in my Galaxie and one on the stand awaiting rebuilding and detailing. Can't wait for it to look like yours.

You mentioned several moves, one cross country.....who moved? You've been in AZ forever right? Hope your health is settling down and you can restart the "big swap"!

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

On a serious note: A friend I have known since 1987 has gone missing. Has not been seen since Saturday. He was person helping me finish up truck then I was going to help him rebuild the 460 in his 1955 panel.

Not often I think that way but have that sinking feeling.

He is usually very reliable when he says he will be somewhere.
He was looking forward as much as I was to get truck done this week.

Doc appt this morning then its time I start looking, something not right.

I can't wait

See my other post, maybe later today

Like waiting on a new bottle of ketchup to start pouring out! ;)

I currently have 5 FE powered vehicles and 4 extra FE engines including a 410~416 Project.

Like a fool I moved to spokane in 2005 moved back to phx in 2011.
In 2011 I moved to a appt in spokane after our house sold and until my daughters got out of school. Then to a rental house then to current place.

Started the Eco Project I think in April 2012.

I am beyond anxious to get back on it and my 427 Project Truck.

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

Friend has been found. At 62yrs old a bit down on his luck he has been living in his vehicle in the desert, he had become very ill (no insurance no doctors)
He should pull through just fine. A bit worried there for a while but its usually me he calls when he is in a pinch. I knew he wanted to help get this truck done so we could start on his '55 engine job. Phone off for days trying to conserve battery power.

I'm glad you found your friend, hope he gets better real soon. My best buddy had cancer about 4 years ago, he came out of it, but realized who his real friends were. I would take a bullet for him and think of him as my brother. He has a 65 f100 his dad owned. I'm hoping we can get it back to it's former self. Truck looks great!!! I also get a chuckle out of the magic soap suppense.

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

Getting down to the wire. Still have not started truck. Distributor needs to go in and of course got a bit carried away with each part before install. Dont want to have to pull anything off and re-do down the road.

Supposed to have it going before I quit for night. The be-hurrieder I go the behinder I get . .

Painted steering wheel Gloss black, after realized it should be Metallic Black for 1970 like the steering column is. Sanded it down, found the Metallic Black paint left over from my '70 boss 302. Did not matter what I did it went on rough like total dry. After wasting a hour or so realize someone had added TEXTURE to the black metallic. Now after about 800 coats of paint just added flat clear for now. Close match to column.

5 minute break over. Back looking for the "MAGIC" Wand

Thanks All!

Back, feet and brain killin' had to take a little break, Leg all swollen up . . Kinda painful.

M A G I C S O A P 1st part of this story is some of the ingredients.

A pretty big clue here. Its how I mix it and what you do to make it work.

H E A T is nice.

More when time allows.

I was finally able to get engine to crank on its own found TDC now I need to get the dist in. Add gas in A.M. lets hope it runs . . No leaks and no funny noises.

Also need to make new gasket for the fuel sender and get it in. Tank bone dry from when I re-soldered the suction tube.

Magic soap hint number 9 ***** I V O R Y liquid soap, did I mention heat?

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

A few asked if I was going to restore the Grandma Step.

Took a bit of time but think it looks good.
Not sure if this was in the Ford accessory book but obvious very vehicle specific. Probably 67-72 F Series only. Good for right or left side.

A bit disappointed I did not get it running yet. Just sooooo much to do.
Lets hope things fall into place tomorrow or will miss the show. Already missed its main purpose the Auction.

Will get some better pics once I get it running and cleaned up. Slowly gathering a coating of dust.

**** is dragging but gotta get another hour in if my legs & feet will hold up . . Break time over.

Thanks!

About 15 minutes after my last post no more work happened, leg was too sore to keep going so crashed.

Back at it early this morning with a HOUR wasted already on the computer. Gotta get busy see if truck will actually run and drive.

I had planned on leaving at 11:00 am this morning for show. With 1000-1500 cars if not early nearly impossible to get a decent spot.

I still have to check brake lines

Bleed Brakes

Drop in Dist

Some type tune adjustments

Finish Cleaning up Interior

Torque Wheels

Clean Inside of Box

Wax Complete (Magic Wax)

Hood Latch Install

Emergency Flasher Light~Bezel

Make sure all lights work

Add Coolant

Polish Door Panel Stainless Trim

Install Door Panels, Trim, Arm Rests

Arm Rest Detail~Paint~

Hand Polish Steering Wheel

GET OFF THE COMPUTER AND GET BUSY! LOL

Now where did I put that "Magic Soap"? Brain?

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

There's a nice F250 at the local car show. Looks familiar. . .

The Green 1970? The one he is asking 10k for?

Or are you talking about the one you helped bail out after the clutch linkage fell off, clutch went to floor and almost hit another car? Thanks for helping that guy out as otherwise when daybreak came he would have still been there.

After you left the dimmer switch shorted out and the headlights went off.

He did mention something about "Magic Soap" on a transmission case if you wanted to try it. No clue what he was talking about.

A few pics with a camera other than a cell phone. A photographer I am not.

Just cannot get them to turn out how the naked eye see's them. Still experimenting but pretty clueless with camera adjustments. Of course inside of shop too with mess everywhere.

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

Now the question lingers. Was it worth it? Satisfaction to have it looking better and now back on the road. But would I ever do another 67-72 Truck? Absolutely not if it was me footing the bill. I do enjoy doing it but not at a losing $$ type deal as I do not feel I need any more "Practice".

If I could take those hours back and put them in my '66 427 Project and have it COMPLETE and the remaining bunch of hours left over could have my EcoBoost truck well on its way maybe even running.

I would not do another on my dime if the truck was FREE. It will make a very nice truck for someone else at my expense. Something I can surely not afford to do at this point in my life.

Once I started I did not want to "give up" abandon the project. So if anyone is looking for a nice '70 Ranger . . . I have found something else I would rather have.

I still need to add the wipers, do a complete detail getting all the finger prints and smudges off, I really want to put the original rims back on with stock hubcaps. Do some fine tuning. A lot of work left to do but at least now I can drive it in and out of shop on its own power and no longer have this HUGE pile of parts taking up space.

Re: 1970 F250 Ranger Project R-S 2014

Pretty nice truck. Lots of effort, very impressive.

As far as the pictures go, odds are that your white balance is off from the shop lighting. If you shoot with a grey card, it can be fixed later easily.
