Try to deal primarily with one guy (or girl) at the parts place. Try to have a go to place. Then ask for a lower price, tell them you'll give them most of your business.

And regarding markup, around here, dealer list is the absolute maximum. I think it's not like that everywhere though.

Same here on the coast, have 4 local parts store chains. If you start buying parts from one of these places on a daily basis, they will give you a discount quick with out even really asking. Cash and net 30 account prices depends on purchase volume and prompt payment

I dont think repair shops around here charge more than full list from a parts store and full list is usually inflated anyways. Far as i know there is no MSLP on car parts. Most parts places set their own list prices, so it appears that even a first time customer is getting a deal or savings off list

Say a good customer walk in price for a battery at a parts store is $100. A good customer means that you might not have a account but the parts man recognizes you. Full list might be $180 to $200. Dealer OEM price maybe $160. Cant imagine a shop charging $300 to $400 for a battery

I think pricing depends on volume of product bought. I know the local Napa has three tiers for pricing, retail being the highest price. not sure what the % over cost is on the other tiers.

Napa also has the "Napa auto care center" program so being enrolled in that program for instance would net the best prices, keep in mind the shop is making a percentage off those parts too in addition to the labor rate.

Other stores would likely have similar programs.

Buying parts for myself, thru work I get the same discount the shop does and depending on what it is, Rockauto.com has been very competitive to where I've bought a lot from them lately, same parts too. If it has a core, I prefer dealing local though.
Totally agree on Rocksuto unless a core is involved. But on some items they can be high or have very high shipping. Amazon, Summit or Jegs or sometimes a store on ebay can be much better. When it comes to parts that are only OEM some car dealers do a big discount internet business, often under other names. You often don't know who you bought from until it arrives.
