@codeadidas and @reclaimer Thanks for checking in!

Release of the Titanium 1/4" drive ratchets is pushed back to early this year.

A couple small updates.

1736423032781.jpeg

The switch and socket release button are now machined Titanium vs 3D printed Titanium on the original production run. Way too much post-processing on the metal 3D printed versions.

Pictured is my old beater (rough prototype finish) with the new switch:

Several limited-edition versions of the 1/4" drive will be released. One version was cryogenically treated and "Superfinished" by CryoHeat in CA. We also micro shot peened (as usual) and did some other surface treatments afterwards, so it's not their usual mirror polished finish. It's much smoother than our normal finish and allows for even better performance of the coatings, while keeping some of the benefits of a shot peened surface.

As machined and pre-coating finish:

The biggest thing will be the strength of the gears. The alloy we're using is absolutely ridiculous. There are some other features that will have to wait until release to mention...

The small dots on the nose of the gears are from hardness testing.

For the Titanium spark plug sockets, we're going to release a slightly more polished version with several new coatings (in addition to Gold, DLC and Iridescent DLC).

The extension/cheater pipe is going to look quite a bit different but in a really cool way. It offers an extremely direct transmission of torque from the girth of the beast despite being very lightweight.

Prices and release date aren't set yet, but we're looking at Q1 of this year.

The superalloy gearset edition will be quite expensive (if you thought the standard version wasn't already!) and made in very small numbers. It's probably one of the most insane hand tools money can buy. These are materials literally used on the space shuttle.

There will be a few standard versions left (Taiwanese gears) but they will have a few upgrades as well.

All the SO guys won't like this but it is Koken-style where the direction switch "points" in the direction you want to rotate the fastener.
Oh damn I mean this is more of an EDC pocket dump kind of tool but that would annoy me 😂

honestly idk if I would buy it either way but I’m definitely out with the backwards lever I got gifted a koken ratchet and traded it because it was annoying to use

@teagueo Checking in, whats the good word there?
Thanks for checking in brother! I'll have some nice pictures to put up soon, but right now, no huge updates...

Got some turns in working on the lawnmower today.

@CallmeRuss Thanks for putting up a pic! You have one of the only DLC/TiN fastener combos out there. We're not too good for mower work lol.

Does Koken call those "Deep Nut Grip Sockets"?👀

Yes those are deep well nut grippers and some mid length 1/4 koken sockets.

Holy ****, the ratchet is so cool and the CrN (Dark Iridescent) looks awesome. All of my motorcycles primarily use hex head (Honda) or torx (BMW) fasteners, so the 1/4" bit holder will actually get used, but the sockets not so much. Just cool to have. Man, this would make a sweet gift (sends link to wife...)

Just curious, is that 1/4” 100mm extension also coming available separately to order if you already have the first series ratchet ?
I hope it’s compatible.

Way cool tool!!

Superleggera

Ed Iskenderian and I are smiling when we read this. He loves the descriptive words which had no technical referent. Now, we need a
Superleggera Polydyne 5-cycle Magnum
version.

I would be shocked if it's not compatible right because it's a quarter inch.... I would be very unhappy if I couldn't use another quarter inch sockets with this. And if I can use other quartering sockets with it then I should be able to use the extension with other ratchets

:rolleyes:i mean in the function as an cheater bar in the handle.

but you never know ,at least my metric 6,35mm square extensions work with the ratchet :ROFLMAO:

Yes, the new extension will fit inside the handle of all the previous Titanium 1/4" drive ratchets. The square drive on it, however, Koken ZEAL sockets will barely fit.

Only a handful will be leftover most likely - making less than 50 of them, scrapped 2 already...let me know if you want me to keep one aside for you.

Dumb question for OP if still monitoring: Looks impressive. BUT when I want a 1/4 drive I usually want a small head and handle. Are titanium materials properties such that you need the wide and ribbed handle to be rigid enough? Also I would want a smaller head to fit in. So I am puzzled why the large radial build in the head. Is it necessary due to material properties again?

What I am saying will not matter in some applications and may be specific to what I prefer. But generally I look for super compact with 1/4 drive. Low backdrag is good too. Sometimes flex head can be nice. Again, I am not sure if titanium materials properties would be friendly to flex designs or not.

I purchased one of your original quarter inch ratchets. I’m really thinking hard about getting on the pre-order for the set. What is the lead time if I should happen to hit buy?

Thank you! There's definitely a place for compact head/slim neck designs.

Very "thin/slim" designs necesitate using heavier steel alloys (higher Modulus of Elasticity AKA stiffness). A conventional ratchet design made from Ti would flex more than steel.

Our ratchet was developed purely for lightweight. It has the highest failure torque per it's weight of any available ratchet (independently tested).

Some current users are a Rope Access Technician, a SCORE international race team and a guy with a Catamaran.

Are titanium materials properties such that you need the wide and ribbed handle to be rigid enough?
The density of Ti is about 2/3 that of steel w/ similar UTS and yield strength to steel. That allows us to use more material while weighing less than steel - we exploited that by placing the extra material strategically.

Post in thread 'Titanium 1/4" Drive Ratchet 2.0' https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/titanium-1-4-drive-ratchet-2-0.523660/post-10375713

If you compare a ratchet body to an I-beam, the biggest increase in stiffness comes from increasing the beam height

So I am puzzled why the large radial build in the head. Is it necessary due to material properties again?

It's pretty comparable to most 1/4" drive ratchets:

Head size is based on the chosen gearset which is very light, low backdrag, favorable loading style for our design and has an expired patent 😄.

Thanks for being an early supporter brother! I sent you a PM.

The estimated shipping date for this set is late July. It's a conservative estimate at this point, but things always pop up...

A few nice closeups of our tools in Aaron Colton's toolbox on Toolbox Tours latest video.

Aaron's a Redbull sponsored stuntrider and pretty awesome bike builder. He has one of the cleanest ratchet/socket drawer setups I've ever seen:

Ratchets shown at 22:32 (linked timestamp below) and some other tools beginning at 29:20.

I love Aaron's PW50 build:
