Does anyone know of any toolbox (without going to say Lista and ordering a custom configured cabinet) that has only 2 inch deep (75mm) drawers?

It would help if you said more . . .why/what are you trying to do? Do you want all of them at 2"? I'm thinking an architect/blueprint drawer might be what you are looking for. . . .

Well I've seen all these nicely organized tool boxes with foam here. And I'm currently in the market for another tool cabinet, so I was thinking to put the two together and start off right off the bat with foam.

Only my electrical test equipment and air tools need more then ~2" drawer heights if I lay them flat.

But most tool boxes I've seen come with a variety of drawers with few (if any) 2" drawers to lay down pilers, socket sets, wrenches, screw drivers etc.

I agree Dimitri, I really wish craftsman or US general would come out with a 26" wide roller with ~10 2" high drawers. To me surface area is more important than volume in tool storage.

As someone else mentioned old blueprint cabinets are great for "thin" storage. A neighbor down the road has a few and it is awesome. Downside is that they take up a lot of space as they are usually 30+" deep and 48" side. Despite why majority says I have yet to find a deal on one. Usually when I find them they are priced well beyond what a nice used truck brand box is :shocking:

I think craftsman use to make a few 10 and greater drawer bottom chests back in the 60's-80's, but most of them had drawers that increased in depth as you got closer to the bottom. Same with snap on and mac.

Best of luck in your hunt, if you find something that is on the market new at a reasonable price please let me know. I have a feeling that your best bet is the used market though.

I'm thinking Lista style is your best choice and even then you are being hopeful. Most will have about half 2" andhalf 3" drawers if they are even close to what you want. What is your budget?

Same as above....would help with more details. But, you may want to look at a Kennedy (or equal) machinist box..........there are quite a few online...ebay/craigslist

Yep. Mechanic's toolboxes have deeper drawers. Machinist's boxes have shallow drawers. Most of my Kennedy boxes have a bunch of tiny 1" deep drawers that are great for mini-pliers, jeweler's files, punches, etc.

2" is 50.8mm, 75mm would be close to 3"

Your right. :eek:

I was working out a Lista cabinet (custom) and they were using a value of 75 for a 2" drawer to calculate how many drawers you can install into a 900 height cabinet.

What is your budget?

I think $2-3,000.

Depends I guess.

As long as its a quality cabinet, and all my tools will be nicely organized I don't mind saving a little more money, and spending a little more as the cabinet will serve me for a long period of time.

I can tell you this, I don't plan on "financing" the tool box. So as costs increase, my time before purchasing it might increase too a bit.

blue print flat files are a dime a dozen and are great for storage. I got 4 of them that are like new. They are 52 inches winde and oer 30 inches deep. I paid $60 for all 2 bluss 2 bases. You can find the for $100 each or less and that is dirt cheap. 2 files with a base rund about $1500 new.

I am an architect so I use them in my office. I have 2 in my shop. I use one drawer for router bits. I drilled wholes in ply wood so they fit. On the other side of the drawer I keep about $3,000 worth of shaper cutters. I have so many shop squares and streight edges the fill another drawer. I have 10 drawers and they are all full of odd things. I built a small shop drafting table for the top. It fits over the top and the board can slant. It is a great place to put blueprnts on that I am using.
They make cabinets with berring drawers. You can get them in any depth you want. They are not cheap. They come up forsale at used machinery dealers all the time here in So CA. I have a half dozen of them. You can get them for under $200 each used. They run $800 and up new.

Your budget for new may be a little low but not hateful. Used Listas, Vidmars are out there for sure, but you have to be vigilant and patient. I own 7 of various styles and have paid between $230 and $700. I have one that has 12 2" drawers and 6 3 inch drawers. Paid $500 for it but drove 2 hours each way to get it. They don't come up every week but they do come up.

look for an older Craftsman "PRO SET" these usually came in black w/ red as an option, I bought one new in 89-90ish, and had it for several years, traded it in Y2K for my current Matco 2 bay bottom chest then bought the top chest to match, after I paid off the bottom. If the drawers weren't so damn thin/narrow I might have kept that box.... I hated the narrow drawers!!!

BTW these boxes were made by Waterloo, and was my 1st box I had with ball bearing slides.

Find a used snap on and order some drawers? I believe ( correct me if I'm wrong not a snappy expert ) they're set up for different size drawers regardless of configuration. Like you could take out a deep drawer and snap in 2 shorts.

Steevo's point about the older Mac's is spot on. They do have shallow drawers and you would be surprised how many tools you can fit in them.

Dimitri, your thinking on shallow drawers makes sense.

Your budget for new may be a little low but not hateful.

I can order a Lista for that amount off their Listabox website.

Kennedy is actually cheaper then that, I could afford Kennedy's 15 drawer Maintenance Cart and top chest for that amount of money.

Only tool boxes I can't afford is the likes of a new Snap On etc. with that budget.

Some of the older Mac boxes had almost all shallow drawers:

I'll have to keep a eye out thanks!

Thanks, I mean it, after noticing that most companies are not producing shallow drawers, I started to think maybe I'm the crazy one for wanting it. :bounce:

buy 2 harbour frieght 26 in toolboxes and put all the 2" drawers and the next size up in one, and then put the big drawers in the other one. might be worth looking into. there was a thread awhile ago about the 26" one being reconfigurable. maybe the 44" one is too and you can try that also.

Your not; I've been saying the same thing about the drawer depth and wasted space about as long as I've been on GJ, and thinking/practicing it longer as best I can. Some people agree, some don't... :dunno:

Most Drawing files are "D"size or larger, (A = 8-1/2 X 11; B = 11X 17; C = 17 X22, D = 22 X 34....)

So the interior of the drawers fits that paper with some clearance.

"C" size Storage is rare at best,but a good size for garage use D is a little bid, the larger sizes you need major shop space for.

there are also some Medical drawer sets made and I have 5 Bretford built units, (Three 4 drawers w 2" drawers, and two 2 drawer w. 4" drawers...) and if I had 6. That would be my primary tools storage in a double wide unit.

There is a good Lista tool box that is pretty good for your desires, but it is a bit above your current budget.

It's a shame SO doesn't let you order a box in the drawer configuration that works best for you. (especially since the frames allow for almost any drawer depth configuration).

It would help them justify their insane prices.

Drawer height it the topic that brought me to Garage Journal in the first place. I have 20 year old Craftsman tool chest and roller box that have a lot of thin drawers. I'm running out of space inside, and like a few in this thread I need square inches over cubic inches. First I tried adding an intermediate box, but there's nothing available in my style anymore and the all black Kobalt I got didn't match my red/black drawer combo. And worst of all, the extra height put the top drawers in the top box at eye level. I had to stand on my toes to see in, and needed a small stool to see in the back of the top.

So I decided I needed a new 40-42" roller, but they have so many deeper drawers they actually have fewer square inches than what I already have!

The best website for configuring toolboxes I've seen is Cornwell's. Too bad their prices are so high and they don't really have any of the smaller sizes. You can build a 44" cart, but the drawers available are only 3, 6 & 9 inches high. The smallest box they make available on the customizer page is 58" - way too big for my space. It would be a pretty cool box full of 2" drawers and in your favourite colours.

So I asked around Stanley is probably the cheapest for a custom cabinet at $3,417.80 (including the hardwood top)

toolbox_zpscda6941b.png

It might take me a couple more months (especially including freight), but I might go with that.

It's 43" high (without the casters), 45" wide and 27.75" deep.

The top drawers is 5x 2.25" (5 drawers), the left is 5x 2.25" and 1x 4.625", and the right is 3x 2.25", 1x 4.625" and 1x 5.375".

We will see though it is pretty expensive, will have to think and plan a bit for something like this.

Depends who you ask....:)

The sizes you listed are "Engineering" sizes.

Architectural sizes are:

A=9x12
B=12x18
C=18x24
D=24x36
E=36x48
