Tool Cart vs Tool Cabinet

I visit many mobile equipment assembly lines for my job, and I notice many assemblers these days use a Uline style HD cart with pegs around the perimeter to hang hand tools/wrenches/pliers/torque tools, and on top are the battery powered tools (18v or 20v) like screw shooters or impact tools.

I still have my roller tool cabinet from the 80's, and a 2nd large tool cart built from an old compartment from a utility service truck, which also has a large top work surface big enough for a good size motorcycle engine. I'm thinking the large tool cart is the better choice after I add ways to hang the usual hand tools. So I have answered my own question (that happens a lot).

To those who use the tool cart method, any recommendations on setting it up the best? I like the idea of having access all around the large cart so I can place it near my bike lift and easily access common hand tools and have a work surface right next to my bike on the lift. Better to keep the little used tools, electronic stuff, meters/gauges/testers etc in the rolling tool cabinet.

Lots of magnetic accessories out there. I am in the process of weighing my mobility options and it seems like they’re coming out with new stuff all the time.

I think 26" to 56" roller cabinets work best, add side hanging for tools etc and you got nice mobile work area/tool resting surface too .
Never seen the point or benefit of a cart over a roller cabinet .

Ilike that the top of the cart is open, giving easier access to tools without having to open drawers all the time

I keep my cart empty. Its easier to lift in and out of the service van then set the buckets of tools on them.

I keep all common tools loose on roller cabinet top and top drawer .
I find the work surface for dumping tools and parts and light duty bench right at the job far more useful and time saving .

To me, you simply can't beat the versatility offered by a multi drawer cart with a deep top till. I like the flip top lid because. i attach several magnetic rails for my quick reach items. the pry bar storage is handy for everything from trim tools, to hose picks, to ratchets and breaker bars, and even pry bars.
I actually use a multi cart system depending on the task at hand. In addition to my main tool cart, i'll have one or two Durham two-three shelve carts. These are used as everything from a work surface, to a storage space for components as they come off of the engine.
One aspect no one mentioned on the carts with 360 degree hang hooks, is security. perhaps security isn't a factor. :dunno:
