I visit many mobile equipment assembly lines for my job, and I notice many assemblers these days use a Uline style HD cart with pegs around the perimeter to hang hand tools/wrenches/pliers/torque tools, and on top are the battery powered tools (18v or 20v) like screw shooters or impact tools.
I still have my roller tool cabinet from the 80's, and a 2nd large tool cart built from an old compartment from a utility service truck, which also has a large top work surface big enough for a good size motorcycle engine. I'm thinking the large tool cart is the better choice after I add ways to hang the usual hand tools. So I have answered my own question (that happens a lot).
To those who use the tool cart method, any recommendations on setting it up the best? I like the idea of having access all around the large cart so I can place it near my bike lift and easily access common hand tools and have a work surface right next to my bike on the lift. Better to keep the little used tools, electronic stuff, meters/gauges/testers etc in the rolling tool cabinet.
