Ive seen many videos of tool salesmen doing demonstrations and proving to the customer that they have a product that you cant live with out. But in the real world the snap-on guy and matco guy just come in the shop and stand around with their thumb up their *** and they MIGHT bring a flyer a few times a year. I have thought to my self MANY of times if I even tried half as hard as these guys I could do better than them.

So does anyone have a dealer that gets involved or do they just wonder around shop?

My mac dealer will bring in a tool bag into the shop every week to show off the tool deals and will even do a demo every now and again. Sometimes lets us try out new products as well.

I don't think there's enough money in the world to be a tool man. Too much competition from other brands, online tool stores (for all of those rebadged tools), and ebay. Not too mention, the deadbeats that try to skip.

However, I've seen dealers over the years that ranged from one extreme to the other. I had a Matco guy that wouldn't even get out of the truck unless it was to chase down a tech that owed him money. Techs would flock to his truck though. I once had a corporate Snap on dealer that had a tote tray that was shaped like a tool truck. He would tote and promote new tools and specials in it often through the shop. I really miss him. Now retired, I think he could have easily sold ice to eskimos.
The Cornwell dealers I've had over the years have been some of the nicest people. However, I've never had one that lasts more than a year. I have built a relationship with a dealer that stops near our facility. He has new tools on display as you enter his truck.
A lot of the dealer's actions depends on how he's received on his route. Some places will only let the tool truck on the premises during lunch. That doesn't provide much time for demos. Of course many tool truck brands sell themselves by just showing up. Some techs would buy a turd if it had the right brand stamped on it.

my dealer while he doesn't do demos or the like. he brings the flyers around. im the one who usually buys if at all really. the boss bought a ratchet and a screwdriver from him thats it.

the boss had bought a bunch of craftsman a couple years ago and replaced whatever was worn out and took it home. id sure like to see what he thought was bad! i know the bosses dad had alot of snap on items and such from what ive come to understand.

my snap on guys does a good job though. even if he can't get the boss to buy, he knows he can find me something! he brings flyers and tells us about the deals and promos going on. my dad will buy things on and off here and there as he has most of everything he wants or needs anyway.

id like to see how other dealers do things just as a comparison.

I've been buying snap on off the truck for years and have never seen a demonstration, it's more dealer restrictions I'd say in some cases, I've been screamed at by the boss for talking to tool guy, shoulda just took my tools home and said "well this is how efficient i am if i aint buying tools" pisses me off, tool time one hour a week is f all....I make it up 5 times a day.

I had a Mac dealer at one time that kept a clean, well stocked truck and always gave new flyers. At the same time the Snap-on dealer would never come around even though I preferred Snappy and always bought from him. The Mac guy would show new products and deals in the flyer. Now it's reversed, the Snappy guy takes more time explaining. I'm still lucky, both dealers come by every week for just me. I pay cash and always get discounts from both dealers because of it.

You would think they would really try harder but they just don't always take the time. To avoid the conflict with the boss, I punch out for break or just go off the clock. My new boss doesn't care one bit. Some set amount of time should be set aside though. That's a good thing to hash out when you get hired. It's not fair for the boss if he's paying someone to stand around for an hour and not fair for the tech if he doesn't have the opportunity to upgrade tools or better himself by knowing what's available.

Working from home I can not even get my snap on guy to call me back, and I meet him where ever he is on his route. I have met him 2 times and bought 400 from him just those 2 times, I guess I never knew how good I had it with my old guy before I moved. He would email me every week and let me know the specials and was always on the lookout or used stuff I was looking for.
