Glad you found someone to accomodate. It helps when they are already in the neighborhood working.
This, and as someone previously mentioned, being flexible helped. He basically did this as a filler for his afternoon.

Whatever he charged you is better than trying to climb yourself or maneuver a pole saw overhead that was,.... how long did it need to be?

I'm not too old, but I lost interest in heights in my 20's due to vertigo, climbing myself was out. I figured the tree was 70' or so, so a 30' pole saw and me working from the tractor would have been just enough to get the horizontal limbs. Maybe.

I'm going to measure it when I cleanup to see if my height estimate was correct.

Yes.

I'm not a heights person....

I need someone to come by with climbing gear, go about halfway up and tie the top off and cut as I handle the rope. Once the top is gone I can fell without any issues.

I hate heights too, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. I had a friend of a friend quote me $1500 to drop a 35" dead ash tree leaning towards my house. But $400 for a 50' boom lift (and I had it fully extended) and sweaty palms for a few hours let me safely take it down as well as trim a couple other problem trees myself.

But it sounds like you found someone to take care of it for you for a crazy deal.
