I stopped in here the other day. Finally realized it was 2 blocks from my work headquarters. Simply amazing if you get the chance to go inside.

Walked out with these!

Next time I'll snap some pictures from inside. The section they have full of bench vises made me drool. Honestly, I didn't know where to even start.

I'm pretty sure the youngest boy in the family was working there too, which gives me hope it will be around for a while.

only ordered from them once but the tools I got were great, Barco crowbar and Norseman drill bits. they have a somewhat eccentric assortment of good stuff.

I'd need some kind of intervention to save my family budget if I lived anywhere near Epstein's.

They hand write receipts as you go around and pick stuff out. If he's not busy, somebody can usually be talked into taking you around and showing you the place. It's a real hoot to see the basement. They had boxes of tools and stuff from WWII era that had not been opened and inventoried yet. Don't miss the military surplus stuff either.
Be prepared to spend a good deal of time there looking, and even then you won't get to see it all.
Cheers,
Jim
PS Their Grayvik line of hammers are like "rejects" from Vaughan. They tag them as Grayvik and sell them thru HJE. I looked at a bunch of them and for the life of me, I couldn't see anything wrong with them. If I was looking for good USA made hammers and didn't have any, I'd buy these first and never look back.

So is there only one of these places or is it a chain? What are the prices like?? Are you paying for antique tools?

I am not an expert on Epstein's but I believe it's the one store. You can check them out at http://store.harryepstein.com/c/M.html

Their closeout items can be priced quite nicely. The forum here had an Epstein's day sort of thing last summer. They do carry a lot of USA-made items, if that makes a difference to you. In any case, they tell you where each item is made.

I have ordered from them maybe five times. Great service.

Yeah it would be!

Paycheck's path
Employee ---> you ---> HJE

I do a fair amount of rifle shooting, and at one point I turned in a resume at an engineering/surveying firm about two blocks from the Nolser bullet factory. In hindsight, I'm kinda glad I didn't get a job there, because I'm sure that I would spend 25% of my take home pay in their factory store...

They hand write the bill. They also take all your stuff up to the counter for you. Pretty neat place. I walked down each aisle a couple times and found new stuff every time. Fantastic store. One of a kind!

Grayvik hammers are great. I would die to see the basement. Guess I never thought there was one. Thanks Jim!

It's funny that you mentioned the prybars. When I was there, I bought all five sizes just to make sure I had them. Tonight,(right after I posted about being at HJE's) I used them to break into a house where the doors were all locked up tighter than a drum. Started with the smaller sizes and worked my way up to the 36-incher. Man, can that thing push a door laterally against the frame. Didn't even have to stand up for leverage. Was just down on my knees at the striker plate level to do this. Popped that door open like it was a sardine can and gained entrance.
Dog inside was barking like hell as I jimmied the door. Good thing it was a friendly dog though because he came shooting out the door the second it popped open. Owner was really happy too. She didn't have to call a lock smith on a Sunday night. I told her she better put a key in the garage somewhere for the next time she locks herself out. Didn't even charge her much for the service call.
Cheers,
Jim Don

While the price is attractive for US made hammers / pry bars, I've been highly disappointed with the Grayvik tools I've bought from HJE. Bad bevels on pry bars, and rough casting marks. The Grayvik hammer I have doesn't have a flat face, in fact its slightly pointed. Honestly, it irritates me every time I see those tools.

Also, I bought a couple of their made in USA house brand tape measures, planning to make them my default tape measure style. However; they have a important short coming; the tape case length is some very random fractionated number. When taking inside measurements, its very handy to be able to just measure, using the tip, and the back of the tape, and add the length of the case, (generally something simple like 4 inches), to the displayed measurement for the total measurement. Because of this, pretty much all tape measure have the case length stamped into it; but, not this one. But, that's probably just as well, considering that this tape measures body's measurements ends up something random in 32nds in I recall correctly.

Not trying to knock HJE, they seem like a great company, and I look forward to spending lots more money with them, just wanted to share, a friendly warning.
