So you're upset that people don't have banged-up tools? Or that they're selling nice tools for too much money in your opinion?

I don't get the point of this thread. Yet I couldn't resist posting. Shame on me.

I'll take the bait (again)...

So older people can't have nice cars? Or an attractive spouse, either?

What else?

Might seem like there's a lot of people with big collections if you only look at this forum. As a percentage of the population it's hardly any.

People can do what they want. If having 15 vises makes you happy that's fine.

The only part I can agree with is that things can get thrown away when the owner is gone. The stuff should end up with someone who appreciates it.

I agree and that's why I have been having free sales. Just come and get it and keep this stuff out of the dumpster.

Um... I have a bullet, a post, and a couple C'man vises, some would call them "collectable", yes, I did paint them and they look really pristene, but trust me, I use the hell out of them.

To me, if you can't use a tool, then it's not a tool but a space taker. Even the few oddballs I have (like my Flying Merkel Adjustable) is subject to use. Something about letting a noble and worthy tool languish just doesn't seem, well, "right"...

What drives me nuts, OTOH, are these people who take awesome and classic tools (say, a Hay Budden Anvil) and let it dit there in a collection for whatever reason, cold, alone, and abandoned, not an ounce of orange steel gracing it's surface...

You don't understand it cause you're looking at it wrong. YES...they're tools and could be doing work. BUT....they're also quality antiques. Restored antiques at that. And restored antiques demand top dollar. You see it and think "Jeez!, That's NUTZZ!" But another collector down the road might say "Woah! That's the rare vice I need to finish my collection!" And be willing to pay that seemingly ridiculous price.
So, it's not so much a guy hoarding vises that he's not going to use......as a guy collecting a certain thing. No different than collectible die cast cars, dolls, old toys, tractors, knives, pottery, or any number of other "collectible" items. You see?

Oh, and trust me.....a guy that's going to do "real work" is NOT going to buy a vise at HF.

I realized awhile ago that 6 weeks after we pass EVERYthing we had and some that took a lifetime to acquire willl be sold, given away or thrown away.

Why does this bother you? Do you think it bothers the BILLIONS of people that came and went before us?

... Says the guy with the polished vise as his avatar.

But seriously, if a guys takes a beat up vise destined for the dumpster, fixes it all up, paints and polishes it, and then his descendants throw it in the dumpster when he dies, so what?

I get jealous sometimes when I see people hoarding cool stuff that I don't even have "one" of. But that just drives me to work harder, not be bitter. G'head. Covet thy neighbor's goods. It keeps the economy going.

Tool polishers,,,,I don't get, but whatever.

Tool hoarders.....I might qualify for....at least that's what I am told.
But then I use my tools.
Can a hoarder also be a user?

Lighten up Francis.
Let a man enjoy collecting and restoring something that he will never use. No skin off your teeth. We all like tools - it's only natural that some will take it a step further and start a collection. Honestly I think they are doing something good by rescuing and rehabbing something that 95% of the world would have considered to be nothing more than scrap.

I am a hoarder & polisher, buy I use every tool or machine I redo, in fact I like using it even more after it's restored. Here's my 1970 PM60 just redone & flattening some stock, 90 year old anvil gets used a lot, I just like everything to look nice. What I have been doing is keeping a list of tools & equipment with values as a guide for them.IMG_0538.jpg

I'd say I fall into that group also. Anybody that says you only need one wrench of a particular size probably doesn't do much work with wrenches.

Cars, guns, cats, baseball caps, coffee mugs, art...People collect and hoard anything and everything. As stated before, dying with it has always been done and always will. Just because you give a specific type thing special value doesn't mean much in the big picture.

My guess is those guys listing these vises on CL and the like are doing it for attention. They want acknowledgement of sorts for what they have or do. It gives them something to do while shooting down offers and if one sales for what they are asking then it justifies their actions and gives them bragging rights of sorts.

I've seen a similar complaint from musicians. Professional musicians aren't rich. A good 20th century mandolin or acoustic guitar is now a collectible, priced out of reach of musicians. The musical instruments go into glass cases, and the best musicians can't use the best instruments. I think musicians have a legitimate complaint.

The difference between the complaints is that a 1923 Martin guitar produces something different from any other guitar. But an old vise produces the same quality of work as a new vise.

They sit and sit and sit...... even on here....displays of vises all painted up like a barber shop sign......

I got set off yesterday looking on craigs........I dont Need anyones vise I already have 1.....ONE...

I havent been on this forum in a few years and Now I understand why others before me ranted about tool polishers..

hey whatever man........maybe there is a OCD on vises and tools....the easy street for a used vise--it get painted and sat on a trophy table...LOLOLOL pathetic

Have you price a good American made vise, they are outrageously expensive. I have my ole father inlaws who got it from his dad but the jaws needs to be replace. Have you price good American made vise jaws lately? Oh my goodness, I see why people run down to HF for a cheap vise that will use once blue moon. But for me I am going to hold on to vise I have cause its unique, American made, belongs to my ole father inlaw. Waiting for jaws to go on sale LOL

Good tools, or collections either.

I'm kind of on craftsman47's side, although GJ has convinced me to buy a few tools that I really don't need. (After 50+ years, did I really need to go out and buy a 3/8" drive 3/8 deep 6 point socket ? It might never get used in the few years I have on this earth.)

Sure, Snap-On tools are nice. Maybe if you have been twisting wrenches professionally for more than a dozen years, have your vehicles paid off, have your kids higher education planned out and some money in the bank for retirement, you should treat yourself and buy, CASH, some !

DIYers, just walk away ! There are much better things in life to spend your mony on.

Don't ask.
The stuff you see on craigs list isn't posted by hoarders or collectors. Hoarders and collectors don't sell (no collection is ever "complete").
Most are guys that flip them. They spend their spare time searching for them, cleaning them up, painting them, advertising them and posting on forums to inflate the demand.

IMO any antique is worth more in original condition (as long as it is usable) than it is restored.

BTW: My chinese vises work just fine. Who knows 50 years from now it may be more desireable.

It seems to fall to 2 groups. The hoarders and the users with a little over lap in between. I have had some nice tools over the years, some would say rare but I always pass them on. I end up with ugly stuff that I put to work. Think of it this way, those hoarders are providing a service to the next generation when their collections get dispersed.

Well I went and hit a few auctions and scored 3 wilton vises....I plan on cleaning them up and painting them nice. Then I'll post them on craigslist so you can add another to your hate list.
The couple craigslist ads you posted.....they're beautiful vises, why would someone not be happy to own something like that? What impact do these "overpriced" vises cause to your vise?
All this vise talk I feel like I need a new vice!

You priced a new bullet vise lately. Not exactly cheap. Who cares if someone spends the time to paint them and sell them. It’s called a hobby. They might even enjoy talking with people who call inquiring about a nicely restored vise. I have many chainsaws, some would be considered collectible, and while they get used they aren’t abused like the work saws. It’s fun to run them, and I could sell them for a tidy sum, but I enjoy them so I keep them.
