I saw a Snap On truck yesterday by a Great Bear auto shop that's close to my house. I wanted to stop, but I don't know or use the shop and have never dealt with the driver/owner of the truck.

I wanted to pick up a few wrenches that I need that I don't want to buy from their online store hoping to avoid fees and shipping.
Two out of three Snap-on drivers that I've just walked up to their truck have been really great. The other one seemed like he really didn't care to deal with me because I wasn't going to buy a whole lot. I've had good luck walking up to Mac and Matco trucks also. The good thing around here is that there are more then just one of each type of tool truck. So you don't like the guy in the truck just find another. I just walk into car dealer's service dept. and ask what day the Tool trucks show up , none of them seem to mind you asking.

We need a tool truck locating thread. I have called Mac and Matco, not very helpful in giving out info. Also cornwell, unless you are at a shop 5 days a week it’s seems to be a secret. Would also like to know other Snap-on dealers in my area, the territory line can be irregular and you may have a few dealers near by. Any ideas how to structure this sorta thread on GJ?

Here in central Connecticut I only see Snap-On trucks. I haven't seen a Mac truck in a long time. Matco has been rare too. There was a Cornwell truck in my area, but I haven't seen him lately.

I live in the sticks and we see the Snap On and Matco trucks all the time. Snappy comes every Thurs. and Matco every other Tues. The Mac guy went belly up about a year ago and no replacement so far.

Wish we still had that SK truck Ricky Joe mentioned above. Maybe he was just passing thru too possibly. All together I wish we had more trucks. It’s mostly Snap-on and Matco in this area seen multiples of each. Have two Mac trucks and 0 Cornwell or SK or Gearwrench to my knowledge. At least I have access to all of those big 3 trucks though just wish more stopped by my work.

Apparently you have to look at the donut store to find them… he had two dozen donuts as he was getting back in the truck. Must have been off to see some good customers. This was in the Raleigh, NC area.

I've seen a SO truck at my tire/alignment guys shop in Cary - wonder if that's him. Almost stopped last time, and decided that would be a bad idea...

I was in Rocky Mount today and saw a big sign on the door to a body shop: No Tool Trucks Allowed.

We used to have a regular Cornwell dealer. He went over to Gearwrench. I can get Gearwrench for distributor pricing so not much reason for me to not only pay above retail BUT tool truck premium on top of that for it. The thing he had going for him when he was with Cornwell was the Cornwell sales fliers are typically decently priced and were lots of pages of stuff you could use unlike the handful of pages that Matco and Snap On have (and half of theirs is overpriced **** like sunglasses and junk for the house). The actual Cornwell made in the USA line also was a good bit cheaper than the equivalent from the others

you aren’t missing anything off a Cornwell truck. Buy Wright, Williams and Proto instead. Cornwell themselves makes nice tools but it’s all industrial grade stuff meaning good quality but less innovation. Most of the stuff on their truck is going to offshore relabeled stuff (the Bluepower line, their diag stuff, air tools) or third party stuff you can literally get anywhere else for cheaper.

oh and after he went Gearwrench then left we had a new Cornwell dealer drop by and started coming last year, he dropped us after a while because nobody was trusting of Cornwell sticking around.

In the Illinois suburbs there are a ton of snap on and matco trucks always on the road, and to a slightly lesser extent, MAC. I haven’t seen a Cornwell truck in ages. Haven’t seen any independent tool trucks for a long time either.

Thank you for the window into Cornwell.

Here in Maryville, TN there is a Matco guy I see driving around several times a week. The Snap on guy I think is based out of a town to the north and doesn't venture down here too much and just last week saw a Gearwrench Truck leaving a Firestone. Had to do a double take didn't realize such a thing existed.

We have a Snap On guy...knowledgeable, and easy to deal with.

Also have a Cornwell guy that will go out of his way to help you. Also easy to deal with.

Used to be a very nice Snap On Lady, down to Tarentum, Pa. Not sure? She may have retired? She was sharp! Knew tools and vehicles that req'd "special" tools ........inside out!

The MAC guy moved back to his native Texas...

Boy, would I like to flag an SK Truck down! (take me back to 1972!) LOL

That's pretty funny - my guess is it's a big time-waster when guys are on the clock and have work to move down the line...
Yep, had that problem when I had the shop. Warning the techs and tool guys about BSing for a half hour on the truck didn't seem to help much, I ended up threatening them to get results. I'm a little surprised about the sign on the bodyshop door, I thought most body guys were flatrate.

I don't claim to understand the dynamics of working in a shop, esp. at flatrate, but even when it's their own money I can see how hanging with the tool guy and BS'ing with the others while doing it could be an easy habit to get into, and when it's the difference between the customer getting back their car and the card getting swiped, I'd think the shop has problems at that point.

You lost me on this one. I did see a Matco truck close to Gainesville,VA turning off of US. 29.
I'm sorry, I was addressing redneck welder, and that I thought I knew who he was talking about. I work and live in northern Virginia, there was a long time Cornwell guy who had his franchise pulled a few years ago. I have a few things I bought from him a long time ago. He now drives the gearwrench truck around here. I work in sterling. I have seen the "new" Cornwell guy in Manassas and sterling, his name is Max. We have a matco truck that comes by as well as snap-on. I have seen a Mac truck in Manassas regularly but I don't have his info.

No but it would not suprise me for there to be plenty of others that have done so. Softailgarage here was a Cornwell dealer briefly before it went down in flames and he said he wished he had gone Gearwrench and they would have wrapped his truck for free.

About the being on the truck for a long time: I tell my shop I need tools to do my job so therefore I’m doing them a favor by buying the stuff. Then they realize I’m right and haven’t said anything since then. Plus once you get on our truck it’s very crowded and you can’t get out till others leave. I try to buy something each week because I’m usually the only one who buys anything so I don’t want him disappearing. Everyone else just pays their bill or gets warranty or hangs out. He is here for an hour and a half so I’ve spent my fair share of time on there too lol. When he comes today I’m going to be the first one out there like always. My dealer is great.

Oh yeah and the reason for coming to this thread I seen a Matco truck going down interstate 81 thru Christainsburg about 30 minutes ago we have a perfect view of the interstate from the back of our shop. Usually see one on 460 too. I swear probably about 10 years ago I seen a Cornwell truck in Salem Virginia just as another poster mentioned seeing an SK truck in the same area. Makes me wonder if we used to have a lot more in this area or if they happened to be just passing thru the area. Back then I didn’t pay attention closely to stuff like their information or anything cause I was still a kid and more interested in a “big truck” than reading the side looking for a phone number lol.

I have an acquaintance who runs a tri-county (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach Co's.) air compressor sales and service business. I happened to be there when the Cornwell dealer was there, I ordered some bolt extractors from him. He didn't have the set I wanted on the truck, but no issue in ordering, I asked him to drop the tools w/my shop-owner friend, which he did. I got their current catalog, and he told me, "you can call me and I can drop tools here at your friend's shop for you." Sounds like a good deal for me.

I knew a Broward Co. (Ft. Lauderdale area FL) Snap-On dealer, he was easy to deal with no issue with not being a frequent purchaser. I also was acquainted with him from a local bike night, among his bikes was a turbo XS-11 Yamaha, he had it yellow, and it was well-maintained. He sold the franchise and moved out of state, but he later returned to so FL.

This is a recent phenomenon, but... Whenever I don't need a tool truck I seem to see 2 or 3 in various locations... but when there's something I want to get from one, they're nowhere to be found. As soon as I make do, ****, there they are again. Used to be I knew that on ** day at ** time the Brand Y truck would be at location Z... :dunno:
