I am a recent arrival to GJ and have only heard of your former site. I never had the pleasure of using it. I still thank you for your efforts to share the resources you have. Regardless the outcome.

Twertsy: sorry to hear your Tools Archive site is down for the count, but as you say you might have learned some valuable lessons so if you do this again it will be much better for you and all of us if you do.

hope you are enjoying the tool museum you live in too!!

Mike, long story made short, NO. I've decided I've had enough frustration with it so when I have time (who knows), I'm going to rebuild it from scratch, incorporating lessons learned, and copy/paste all the old content into the new site.

Todd,
I hear you. Probably the exact way I'd go if I were in your place. Good luck!

TA is coming back! Bear with me as I rebuild the site. It is currently available but will take some time to get back to where I was. Things are hot & heavy at work but I'll continue chunking away at the rebuild as I have time.

Great News. Being a fairly new member I didn't get much time to visit the site before it went down. Can't wait to explore the vast knowledge you have accumulated. Thank you for taking the time to first gather all the data and for bringing it back from the grave.

Todd,
That’s really good news! I used it all the time. I’ve saved up a few more GMTK and other WW2 tool pictures to upload.

Great news. Like Toto, I had minimal experience with the site prior, but I am seeing lots of references here to it. Thanks for putting in the effort to bring it back to life.

Todd, that is great to hear. Did not expect you'd be able to get it back going this quickly. Thanks!

Well, right now I'm simply moving all the old stuff over to the new site. After that I'll be integrating some cool new features. It's a process........but I'll get there.

Woody,

If you recall TA 1.0, there was a 'Bio' section that provided as much historical information (articles of incorporation, capital, date of founding, major patents, expansions, moves, etc) as could be found on each Mfgr, A to Z, including names and some basic biographical data on founders and officers, etc. That is part of what Todd is moving/reconstructing. I will be an Admin again and I will be more than happy to add any new/non-redundant information to those Bios from you or any other user/contributor, as well as entirely new Bios for Mfgrs that were not included in TA 1.0.

All,
It appears I haven't yet set up the "Account Approval" email function yet. All of you who have requested an account have been approved. I continue to work through all the company history pages, and then will move on to building and integrating new and interesting capabilities.

Merry Christmas!

All, as a reminder, you need to send me your preferred password via [email protected] so I can set up your account. I'll email you back when I've finished.

Greg and I are still working through the best way to document tool examples. I've finished putting up the tool manufacturers, but haven't yet decided on the best way to manage the upload/documentation of tool examples. We're working on it......

Well, things are coming along nicely. I'm "Re-learning" how I created some of the stuff on the old site, discovering new capabilities with the upgraded software, and realizing some of the functions I used in the old version aren't yet available for the new version.

Currently in the "design" phase of a new functionality that will allow you to find tool set (socket, wrench, etc.) configurations and keep your inventories right on the site. You'll no longer need your healthy spreadsheets to keep track of where you are and what you're missing to fill up your sets! You'll also be able to keep your inventory private, or allow people to contact you if they have something you're missing by publicizing your missing pieces. Because of the MASSIVE amount of work involved in documenting all these sets in the various brands and timeframes, this is going to be a "pay service," just a little something to cover expenses, probably like $1/month or thereabouts.

The other effort I've re-invigorated is the Trademark inventory. My plan is to allow you to search EVERY "tool-related" trademark ever registered. I've currently only listed the major manufacturers (Bonney, Blackhawk, Herbrand, Williams, etc.) on their pages but this will be a future search function. The intent is to allow searching by the mark, the mark description, timeframe, tool types so marked, and registering company as a minimum.

If you haven't yet brought up ToolArchives on your smartphone, give it a try. I've designed it to be very easy to use on your phone so you'll be able to take advantage of features like the ones above while on the move at sales/flea markets, etc.

Lastly, please don't hesitate to throw ideas our way for features/functions you'd like to see implemented. Focus on things that would help people in the hobby find and manage information quicker and easier.

Thanks! Todd

Todd your old site had some method where users could add photo's etc to build up data for the various brands, etc.
Will you be trying to do that again?

THANKS for this major labor of love.

Yes, but we've been discussing that. Trying to come up with a way to:
  • prevent duplication
  • ensure temporal attribution so we can align production periods
  • keep it consistent
  • and conserve server space

I was running up against the cap on my server space with TA 1.0, mostly due to catalogs, and the next jump in hosting was HUGE. I'm not inclined to pay that next level hosting fee so we're looking to provide the capabilities, while conserving space. This is the major reason the catalogs aren't posted up yet. What I'll likely do is upload them to the ITL and reference them.

I have begun add catalogs. This morning I focused on Blackhawk adding 1919, 21, 26, 27, 30, 31, 35, 37, 38, 39, 43, 47 and 1953.

For now, go to the Blackhawk page, and click on the "Blackhawk Manufacturing Co." link under Tool Company heading to view all content published on Blackhawk. I will be creating a view to better locate catalogs but it is what it is for now. I just ran out of time this morning.

Ok folks, there is now a top menu link for you to browse catalogs. Just pick the company and the available catalogs will show up below in the year order they were published. Bear with me as I get all the catalogs up there, but Blackhawk and Bonney are done, working on Plomb now. Here's a direct link to the new page: http://toolarchives.com/catalogs

Thank you for all your hard work!

Questions:

1) Where's the "create account" link? Since the old user data is lost, I can't log in of course. But I couldn't find a way to create a new account.

2) Will you be accepting donations to support the site? If so, set up a link on the site for PayPal or other form of electronic payment

3) Are you interested in receiving catalogs, ads, etc that are not yet digitized? I don't have the time or capacity to scan the dozens of pages of tool ads I've collected (mostly Popular Mechanics/Science magazine ads from the 50s & 60s) but I'd love to see them get scanned and uploaded.

Ditto the thanks for all the hard work put into your site Todd. I access it nearly every day. I like the donations to support idea. I'd be more than happy to chip in.

Brian,
If you read above, shoot me an email with your user and PW.

I'm working on some "pay to access" functionality, and will have a PayPal set up soon.

Yes, I'll eventually like to have that documentation, but it'll take time.
