Toolbox Painting Technique

I am painting a vintage Craftsman toolbox and am having trouble finding a suitable color. My challenge is that I need a flat color that has a little texture to it like the old Craftsman and Kennedy toolboxes have, does anyone have an idea as to how to make a flat paint get a little texture. i am limited to spray cans as I do not have a spray gun. i am thinking of some kind of technique that you could apply after the flat spray pint is put on.... any tips or ideas are appreciated.

i think that's a little too much texture, what would be ideal is if i could find that hammers look, that has a little texture, but that are ALL glossy, don't care for a glossy vintage toolbox!! I'll have to see if they make that bed liner spray in a medium-dark grey, that's the color I'm going for.

I've never used them, but do the "hammered" finish paints actually leave a texture on the surface, or just the illusion of texture? If they actually leave a texture, you could use one of them as a sort of primer, and then paint over it with the flat color that you want the final finish to be.

Well, i think the hammered has somewhat of a texture, but not much, i think what I may tery and please let me know if you think this might work, spray on the hammered and when dry, take a 000 type of steel wool and lightly wipe it down, maybe that will take the shine away, either that or do they make a clear coat in flat?

Have you thought about an industrial paint and mixing in Homax's mix in texture and try rolling it with a foam roller?

If you put a light coat of the truck liner it's not to heavy of a texture.

I used some stuff called Hammerite on a homemade tapping jig.
Went on real nice and dried fast, and still looks good years later.

You can buy flat clear in a spray bomb. Paint with whatever hammer tone you like then spray the flat clear over it.

The bed liner spray from HD is not heavily textured. Wrinkle paint may be an option too, but it has more texture then the bed liner spray.

I used some PLASTIKOTE bedliner spray can stuff. It only hada slight texture. The more you spray, the rougher it would get. I put a couple coats inside the tub my my granddaughter's wagon when I painted it, but I never painted over it.

EDIT: I used plastikote spray bedliner not Herculiner as I had earlier posted.

You could just spray your bedliner down and then put your color of preference over it on top.

For the money and the ease of it it is hard to beat the hammered stuff. Colors are decent, looks good and holds up well.

Take a look at this type.
My wife bought some for a plastic yard playhouse for our grandaughter...it's slightly textured and comes in several colors.
It's textured but not overly done.
