Mr. Lilscorpian has been pretty quiet. I wonder what he has been up to.

Been workin on the house! 7 months ago we started in on the master and kids bath at the same time which ended up being a little much. Built both vanities and 2 built-in assemblies in about a month. Spent the last 6 building drawers, drawer fronts, doors, and side panels. Son's spring, summer, and fall lacrosse + unhealthy work travel this year contributed to the slow progress. Nearing the end now though.

Just wrapped up the kids vanity last weekend.

Left this thread alone for a variety of reasons. Primarily it's because some got to belly aching over my posts not being garage organizational (which I actually agree with ). Second, and most importantly, most of 2015 has been more like shop disorganization. Had my share of learning moments as usual. Screw boxes hit the floor during cabinet assembly - reminder that particleboard isn't designed for any abuse.

Probably won't get back in the shop to work on the shop until winter. Wish I had more time, I have a few organizational projects I've started that is like to finish and post.

It's your thread. Post what you want in it. I personally love to see all of the projects you do regardless of whether they are shop related or not.

Beautiful work in the cabinets btw.

I spend my share of time with the kids and wife. I'm also an addict. I have to be building something. I'm a software engineer by trade but that job is just mental gymnastics. I gotta do something physical or I go crazy. I jump back and forth between wood and metal and throughout the years, I've managed to learn a little here and there from friends or jobs I held at one time or another. So the way I keep from going mad is to build stuff. I have maybe a dozen projects going at any one time. Sometimes I work on the house (makes the wife happy), sometimes I work on the truck I'm building (when I need some greasy clothes), and other times I work on the shop and try to figure out ways to make working in it easier, faster, etc.. But to be fair, I only get a day here or there. It just so happens I'm burning some built up vacation. Life is busy and normally I have to steal a couple hours here or there...or I can't sleep at night.

Sounds so close to my life it's scary...

Come over to my place and bring your track saw!

I'm working on outfitting an enclosed trailer as a jobsite trailer and trying to figure out how to get 10 lbs of stuff into a 5lb bag.

I too need to be building or fixing something, so I've given up a cushy desk job up and starting my own GC/handyman type business. Figured I could make the tools that have accumulated over the years earn some money. Now to earn enough to buy that tracksaw.

Re: Tool Organization

I know most people will buy a pre made holder for screw drivers and pry bars for their tool box or cart. I purchased this cart about 3 weeks ago. I hated always laying tools on the top. It would make it hard to find certain things. So i decided to use different size pre cut pvc pipe. I picked it up at home depot for 1.38. Nuts, bolts and washers were from work. I brought my pry bars to home depot to make sure they fit and I now have this sweet holder that takes up zero room on the cart. I might make another one similar for my extensions but this is the first step. 7673d7031cd2b9a44e0d995a5d0be2ec.jpg2eb6b976adc913551fcfc1d5e6ced1cc.jpg

This is how i have a few of my drawers organized. I wouldn't trade my Ernst socket rails for anything.

Where did you get/how did you make the screwdriver organizers.

Don't you think the Ernest socket rails leave a material of space in the drawer wasted?
There is no organizer for my screwdrivers. I just have them laid in there, but they don't move around too much. The Ernst socket rails do leave a lot of space but i had enough room to store everything I needed in the drawer and it looks great. I plan to eventually have three boxes. That drawer is all 6 point sockets. I will have another drawer for 12 point sockets, and one drawer for impact sockets.

Looks like the screwdrivers are set in foam.

Three boxes? I'm trying to get everything into a single box that I can roll into and out of the race trailer. One set of traveling tools.

Re: Tool Organization

For those of you who've noticed pics are missing, an update -

It seems someone managed to get FTP access and buried a bunch of their own **** deep in a directory that I don't typically change. Guess naming it "persisting" gave it away. I deleted huntress if code pages and static html content. Neato.

I've requested the site lock be removed and should have it back in a day or so I'm hoping.

EDIT: It's working now. The thread should be restored to the helter skelter mess it was. ;)

Nice setup. I like how yours has more vertical control over the pry bars. Mine, shown below, allows the shafts of the bars to swing around as the cart moves. Not a big deal but feels sloppy and less organized.

lilscorpian, fantastic work, all of fit. Especially your design solutions to storage.

Ignore the fools quibbling about you being 'off-topic' in your own damned topic. ALL of your creative works contain designs and work that is highly educational and interesting. That sort of thing ought to be welcomed in ANY topic.

Most of us are here to see and learn new things. So please don't let such pedants deter you from sharing your works.

Re: Tool Organization

(Sigh)...it appears that Tapatalk image hosting doesn't work as well as I thought it did. For the most part I've used my personal website to host my pics but occasionally, when I had something quick to share, I just threw it up with the Tapatalk feature. After looking back, I've found that many of the pics hosted there are dead links now.

Why? An image probably persists until it hasn't been referenced for some set amount of time and then it gets deleted from their server. That's how I'd do it anyway. My lack of updates probably contributed to it.

BOO

To complicate things, if I try to go back and fix them, I can only fix the pics referenced in my posts not the replies or references that include copies of them which means (*****) there's no way to fix the thread anymore unless I become, or get help from, an admin.

So, in my book, Tapatalk ***** for image hosting.

Scorpion.....I started back at the beginning of this thread AGAIN yesterday, was up at 3:30 this morning, and just now finished it. There is just so much awesome in this thread that so I can keep it at hand when I get ready for my big organization, I put it in my Signature, for all to possibly see that visits any of my threads. The work you do it just way over the top, and should be a must read for anyone.

The ideas in this thread, not only by yourself, but others, are abundant enough that anyone with a table saw, or a mill, or sometimes just the very minimum tools should be off to a great start of getting organized.

And again, this thread should be required reading. :rocker:

I was reading backward from the last post and fell across this..went to the start and now I'm addicted.. Thanks Kevin.. lol..

Thanks. Yea i took advantage of the lip the cart had on the side. I had it originally with no spacers and it had the pry bars all crooked. So i installed like 5 washers per bolt and now they sit straight.

Re: Tool Organization

lilscorpion, one the image hosting archive problem... You could create an accompanying thread to show the old pics only. No commentary, just archived pics. Anyone who wants to can do the same for their broken link pics as well. Thanks to you and all contributors for sharing some really good ideas.

You might want to do some testing with imgur.com. It's free, and has some really handy features like appending s,m,l,h to the end of your given image name will give you different image sizes (small, m, large, huge) without any extra work. Example (small, medium, large):

Garage Journal allows you to save pictures directly to the Garage Journal website. I've got pictures saved here from my first posts back in 2011.

Amen to that!

I'm feeling so inspired having read through this entire thread over the past few hours. It's a shame that i'm confined to the apartment life for now. Granted, i'm ONLY 25, but i'm ALREADY 25! There's so much that i want to build and make!

Did you ever get that heater installed? :bounce:

I was 25 when I got my first 110v welder and that's right around the time I also started buying tools from harbor freight on a very limited budget. I lived in an apartment and kept my tools in the single detached garage (probably wasn't a great idea looking back. Everyone starts somewhere, ours seem very similar. That was nearly 20 years ago for me now and my list of things air want to make never has gotten shorter.

I've not gotten to the heater. Turned out that my gas line isn't big enough where I was able to tee into it so the size coming into it needs to be increased. To do that I need to do some serious drywall surgery that I'm not interested in doing just yet. I've spent most of the winter this far doing wood working stuff which isn't nearly as bad in the cold as metal working.

Thanks for the compliments.

I've been quite but not because I was silenced. In early November I started the mad dash to attempt to bring some of my long term projects to a conclusion (my wife is getting antsy). Kitchen remodel - done. Kids Jack and Jill bath - done. Master bath - nearly done. Study - in progress. Master closet - pre-demo, cabinet fabrication in progress. If I can get the Master bath done, I'll take some time and get some updates up.

My garage is a huge mess. If I showed you, you'd all be disappointed. :)

I just started to finish my basement this past week. Moved everything to my garage woodshop. I can relate.

Wow I just started reading but had to scroll to the bottom so I could subscribe to this one. This will take a while to digest and of course steal all of your ideas. Bwahaha! Really some awesome stuff.

I've been into woodwork (Gpa was a custom home builder for 63 years, entire family is in it. Father has owned his own successful interior trim company for residential builders for over 20 years) and metal work (out of necessity from getting into building and racing just about anything with wheels since I was 13. I have a Masters degree in computer programming and analysis from U.F. and my first job out of college was a loan officer. Go figure. I'm all over the place.

I can really relate to being a programmer and a 7 year clean recovering addict with the need to do something physical after work to get an unexplained urge to go away. On top of it I have been told my OCD has gotten worse since I went clean. So reading through this thread has been liking reading a biography in a way. I love what you've done along the way and it's definitely something I wish I would of chronicled myself along the way. It's very therapeutic.

Hope you had a wonderful holiday and I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Figured it's time for an update on the "why no tooling organization" side-bar. Sadly I'm still working on completing the projects inside.

The kitchen is almost done. One of the last efforts is to replace the face frame around the oven and make the upper and lower cabinets. After removing the oven from the pre-existing cabinet, I got to look at how the pros install an oven.

c7962e073ee50b494737cc91110f0e9b.jpg

The infrastructure of the cabinet had been completely hacked away to make room for what must have been a slightly wider and/or taller double oven at some point. For the most part, none of the cabinet structure remains between the upper and lower cabinets.

4344912f33f60ae50d2a6a9cf1f98489.jpg

The upper, which we had previously been storing all of our electric appliances, was being held in place by four 3 1/2-inch long screws into drywall with no anchors. Surprised I didn't fall out with the weight it had in it.

Post demo, ready for the new.

24501979d31cc4063ff535c3e670a9d1.jpg

The more disable replacement is a complete upper cabinet that gets its support from 2x4 cleats going all the way around the bottom along the wall as well as being attached to the one-piece face frame. It needs to be strong to support eBay I have planned.

b1d706aad99ff7d2065157768d054306.jpg

The lower cabinet is a basic base which is setting on a 2x4 platform, anchored into the wall, and attached to the face frame as well. The lower will receive two drawers for cooking pans.

Re: Tool Organization

Normally I would prefinished the face frame before I installed it, but opted to painted in place so I could touch it up if I had problems installing the oven I needed to touch up spots.

I decided to use one of the telescoping cabinet designs I had previously vetted out in the garage for the overhead storage.

5f38ebff6337b5f2b5e1f9866a18e169.jpg

When open, it's much easier to access the full 24 inches of depth.

f5b84ab80b2b27496a4f6952cc44421a.jpg

Previously, the unit only had a single drawer below the oven. Many times it had irritated me that we had to move so many things around to get a pan. Just saw that, I decided to add an internal/hidden second drawer so that I would have to shallower drawers for storage.
