flyingkite,

When were you in Germany?

It stinks that you were not able to purchase anything from Bauhaus after taking those pictures. Thanks for posting the cool pictures .

How were the prices for Bosch, Knipex, Wera screwdrivers, and Wisent screwdrivers (Wiha) compared to U.S. prices?

Which cities in Germany did you visit?

Did you visit any other tool stores besides Bauhaus?

The Bauhaus store you took pictures was located in which German city?

Thanks,

Dave

Prices are not outrages especially having in mind that we are dealing with the high quality tools. Anyway, Knipex line in Lowes seems to be slightly cheaper comparing to the Bauhaus price tags.

What's funny you won't find "Made in China" tools anymore, now they are "Made in PRC". Under German supervision, of course.

I bought some stuff in the OBI, German do-it-yourself store like our Lowes or Home Depot. They sell their own brand, Lux & LuxPro, some tools are actually rebranded NWS cutters and pliers (LuxPro line).

I have a question for the guys with Stahlwille sockets. I have not been able to use them twice now. the first nut was on a 1977 BMW cylinder, had to get a 1/2 12PT. The next was today on a 1981 vw rabbit truck, it was an 11MM. a little grubby, but the twelve point wrench by Stahlwille fit:headscrat These six points sockets seem a little tight. I tried the 1/4 Stahlwille 11MM socket as well as the 3/8 11MM stahlwille.

geeez... ****** germans :D

There are also good Germans!

These nice people below gave me permission to take pictures of their tools.

Not all Germans are cool mechanics, now you can see what tools ordinary workers used when they assembled the summer patio for the Beer Restaurant.

Doing something in a small German town has some disadvantages, though.

Every passing car would stop and folks in the car would comment on the work progress, give some advice or simply say Hi.

OK, I need the super tool detectives from this thread to help me out here. PB Swiss made a line of interchangeable screwdriver blades who's part numbers (individual) all start with "PB NC6-190/" followed by the sizing (done in the typical PB Swiss way). They were introduced new in 2006 and can be found in the "What's new in 2006" PDF brochure from PB. They've since been discontinued and I'd like to buy some of the closeout stock. However, I can't figure out what interchangeable handle they fit. Since they're discontinued, I can't look that piece of information up in the current catalog or on PB's website. I'd like to buy a SwissGrip handle and a set of these blades, but I can't tell what SwissGrip handle they might fit.

Can anyone figure it out?

A very recent purchase- Shroder tap wrench with reversible ratchet. German made, lovely quality feel to this and less than €15. I bought it to use as a ratchet screwdriver in tight spots (primarily in woodworking), just fit a standard 1/4" adaptor in the chuck and away you go!:)

Are they 6mm hex or 1/4" hex? Wiha did/does make a 6mm set with a cool magnetizing/demagnetizing handle. :dunno:

Went to woodcraft today and seen all kinds of interesting stuff. First I noticed all the English made Stanley tools have foreign content now and no Sheffield England COO. :( Also I noticed German made Colt bits and they are very affordable $2.99 and up for single bits and $20-25 or so for a set of them.

Picture367.jpg

Fein Multimaster sets were $350ish till the end of the month(if only it was on sale around Christmas...)

Was looking at Tormek and whats the difference between the 2 other than size? I'm looking to get one later this year or early next year if they run the Gransfors Bruks offer again.

Picture366.jpg

Later I went to Sears and was talking with some guy in the electrical section who was a fellow tool nut and invited him here. :) Looked at heat guns and they are made all over Czech Republic, Romania(I bet that one has nightmarish quality...), Switzerland and, Swiss made(50% Swiss content?)

Also found this on clearance for a buck. :)

Later at Office Despot I impulse purchased these while getting ink.

The case is pretty flimsy compared to a Pelican/Peli but works great for its intended purpose of holding writing instruments.

I can't wait till I get the FN paid off so I can start buying tools...

That's long been a bit disingenuous. Hellaby isn't in Sheffield and a lot of their plastic components are imported (although mostly from France, rather than China).

I have loads of those boxes, since they're also a lot cheaper than Pelis and all Really Useful Boxes branded products are UK and US (Ohio) made.

It depends. Some of the Wiha Basic pliers (regular red handles) are made in SROV, and some still in Germany. The Wiha Professional pliers (thicker red/black handles) I believe are still made in Germany.

Most of that plastic moulded stuff is still made in 1st world countries because it's bulky & mostly automated.Major exception is the Rubbermaid ones which are made in Malaysia , Newell-Rubbermaid sold out as per usual.

Anyhow i haven't bought any tools lately , i am saving money for my holiday in the USA in a few months.I will buy some tools over there it is far cheaper:thumbup:

Oh yeah i forgot to mention i recieved my Ernest & Wright scissors last week and inside the silk lined display case they come with a card with the seal of Sheffield on ,a blurb from the mayor and his signature confirming it is made in Sheffield. It is cute.

Yupp, maybee because gedore is good. Did you know that most ( not all of course) of the German tool companies ( like Hazet and Gedore,...) are located very close to each other, in the region of Remscheid. I mean, really like neighbours.

I was under the impression the Ruhr valley was the heavy manufacturing district. Is this no longer so?

Here's my only tool from Spain (I think).

Remscheid is actually closer to Cologne than to the Ruhr Valley. But it is all very close to each other. The Ruhr Valley was famous for the heavy industry. Remscheid and Wuppertal were and are famous for forged steel products. They are about 15 miles apart. 15 Miles in the other direction is Solingen, which is famous for knifes and scissors. The Ruhr Valley is about 30 miles away.

What series # are these short Stahlwille Stabil wrenches?

In deep 75* ring spanners from my 1955 catalog I see

17 Petit but only up to 8x9 or 5/16x11/32, much shorter still at 95mm
and
20 Stabil are 75* and "normal" length box wrenches.

I suspect they are from a discontinued series?

page 3 of the 1955 Stahlwille catalog has this map to their Wuppertal-Cronenburg Works.

They also had the new Bosch cordless electric vine bottle opener :)

Monte, do you happen to know of any dealers that sell the IXO heads separately? I've picked one of these up, only with the torque adaptor:
I'm looking to get the offset adaptor and 'vino adaptor' (aka corkscrew fitting lol). I can pick the former up from Amazon, but thought I would ask here rather than double the shipping. Thanks Monte! :bounce:

PS, Monte I forgot to mention that you have an awesome knowledge of tools, and thanks again for putting this up!

Actually, while I'm at it, does anyone know if MTC tools have an online catalogue for their wares? I cannot find one online. (They are a Japanese firm making pliers, they've been here before)
