Yes, some 80´s and 90´s Volvos had the VW/Audi diesel (pump type). The demand for diesels at that time wasn´t so big, since Volvos primary markets are sweden and the US (Both petrolhead nations). Later in the end-90´s when the demand for diesels was growing, they developed their own diesel, the "D5", straight five cylinder, with first 163, then 185 and now 215 hp. This year, they introduce new engines in all their models. Like BMW, its at modular engine, all are 4-cylinder, diesel or petrol, app. 2,0 liters, ranging from 125 to 250 hp. Different powers achieved with different software and turbos and/or compressors (superchargers). The former "luxury" 5-cylinder, 2,5 l. engines from the Skövde plant are soon history... Impressive, though, that it´s possible to get so much power from todays small engines.
