I am a egineer by education and a bit crazy on vintage screwdrivers.

I don’t have much information I’m afraid, but I have seen those screwdrivers, and others like it, in Bundeswehr tool kits.

Can’t now remember what the tool kits were for, but the screwdrivers were definitely “Letranit” and they had the same colour handles.

Seemed to be very good quality tools as far as I can recall!

I don't want to clutter up two threads, but for anyone looking to order their old-world tools from https://handtools-from-germany.com, I wanted to share my recent (and sadly ongoing!) experience in doing so. I hope others have had better luck.

My absolute favorite T-handle hex keys ever. USAG from Italy. These have stood up to 20 years of regular use with little or no signs of wear. I really like that the hexes on the short arms are offset by 30 degrees to ensure that you can always get on the bolt. The only problem is that they only come in metric. I'd kill for a matching SAE set.
I've been wanting a set of sliding t-handles for a while. Just picked up these Facoms (84TCD) for a good price. I do like the ability to slide the t-handle, but on the other hand the round bar on the USAG would probably be more comfortable than the hex bar on the Facoms. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs ...

Facom and USAG are both SBD companies now, and it appears that the USAG t-handles are available under the FACOM name.

Been a while since I treated myself with this many nice tools!

First up, a serious set of pliers putting old ones aside apart from a couple of indestructible weidmuller crimpers and shears
pliers.jpg

Then some screwdrivers, note the small wiha on the left is my absolute favorite for PLC work, highly recommended.
Can never have enough mains testers so I got two of the same Gedore red, really cheap for an ergonomic model.
screws.jpg

A gentle persuader
hammer.jpg

Not so gentle persuader, nothing on the label but internet says china, too bad, feels nice.
Don't mind the dirt I needed to use it right away.
ham2.jpg

This one is a special project, I figured I can fit 10 of these in a systainer 3rd gen 237
Will be getting 8 more when the systainer arrives and will build a small set of rails to fit them snug!
organizer.jpg
org2.jpg

Got some local staples, much cheaper than any made in china namebrand.
And a swiss made universal blade set.
cons.jpg

Bonus bits from Unior
I'm a 3/8 guy, but something possessed me to buy a 1/2 ratchet... (it might have been on sale)

Cross post from the new tool arrivals thread.

Gedore Needle Nose and Diagonal Cutters. These are nicer than I expected and will probably be buying more. Beautiful machining, tight joints, zero slop and the tips / cutting edge meet perfectly. Made in Austria.

Although they have red handles, these are part of the main "blue" line of Gedore tools and not part of the budget "Red" brand of tools.

I may be susceptible to the influence of youtube videos. 😊

IMG_8189.jpg

Went for non ball end. Seems like ball end keys are more common than 'normal' now. I've not had any trouble with ball end, but assume it must be a compromise on fit, to get the extra angles.

IMG_8191.jpg

'Shiny nickel-plated'

IMG_8197.jpg

The case/holder is no frills and definitely 'compact' compared to others. It does not hold the keys tightly, so maybe not a good choice to keep in a mobile tool bag, despite its small size. I've found it's best to push the keys all the way in to the holder to keep them tidy.

I had a pair of their combination pliers, and was also very impressed with fit/finish, and overall niceness of them.

Does anyone now if these Made in Austria pliers are manufactured by Stubai?

Judging by the joints I was thinking of Orbis Will, but they are a Knipex subsidiary these days.

Kind regards,
Oliver

If you watch this video from 8:13 you can see how they make their own pliers
The website says that they produce pliers in Austria since 1972

Thanks Monte! I had no idea Gedore had a factory/plant in Austria.

Since we're on a Gedore kick, here's a couple of Austrian-made pliers I picked up a couple of years ago from Cripe for a good price.
They are *very* nicely finished and function perfectly. I haven't used them heavily, but I've used them a fair bit and they show essentially no signs of wear. My only beef is that the handles are ridiculously thick and the ridged portion interferes with how I like to hold them for fine mechanical work (which is mostly what I use them for). I wish they had normal dipped handles, and I've even been tempted to take them over to the belt sander. But I like them nonetheless!

Does anyone have both the old and newer style PB insider, and have a preference for one over the other? Or can speculate why one may be better than the other?

I have both. The older one is annoying because the cap can unscrew in use. The new one the cap rotates and you slide it in/out; there's 2 thumb "pads" on each side to grab. The cap stays in place somehow, it doesn't slide freely in/out.

Get the newer one. A very worthwhile redesign.

I would like to ask if the new WBG wrenches are still made in Germany ?

Hi!

My advise would be to contact WGB with the part number(s) you're interested in, and they will tell you where/ in which of their plants it is made. I did that quite some time ago, and they were more than happy to answer any COO question(s) I had.

Rule of thumb: Made in Germany still counts for something, so if something is in fact made in Germany, manufacturers will put it on their products if they somehow manage to fit it somewhere on the actual product. Some will use "Germany" if "Made in Germany" eats up to much space (Stahlwille for example does this on some tools, but with them you can be 100% sure it's actually made in Germany if Germany is on it. However there are manufacturers that use just "Germany", where I'm highly skeptical of the COO.)

If you check the catalog: https://www.wgb-werkzeuge.de/download/WGB-Katalog_2021.pdf you will find that they have tools pictured that clearly show "Made in Germany" - it underlines what I said above, if it is made in Germany, they will go above and beyond to convey that. (See page 03/6, 03/7, 03/9 for example.)

Kind regards,
Oliver

Are WBG a manufacturer? Quite a lot of their tools look familiar.

On a side note, been wanting to try this style of spanner for a while.

Yes, WGB is a manufacturer. At least they used to be. The way the current entry of company history reads, they might have given up the in-house drop forging (located in my home state) and only utilize the offices these days. If that is the case, it's a fairly recent move, I talked to them a few years ago, and back then they still made tools in Germany/Breckerfeld.

In between the lines of charity projects/ social engagement, you can read that they have a plant/factory in India.

"In the Indian state of Rajasthan, close to our production site in Jaipur, we support our own educational project, the Marino Wahoe School in Kukus."

Would like to get this project wrapped up soon. The Russian stuff poses some real challenges due to the language barrier, but I make progress a little bit at a time. ;)

Greatly appreciate any help you can provide. BK

(** NOTE: of necessity, I have to replace the funny characters (like ß or ü) with "standard" characters or they don't transfer properly to other machines/operating systems. )

Some bits and bobs.

More screwdriver/bit magnets.
Back up PB PH0 ESD drivers for work.
Felo bit boy.
Toptul 'long' combination spanner. (They make standard, long and extra long. 'Long' are very similar lengths to standard Snap on spanners).

IMG_8263.jpg

I think the Felo bit boy is an older model (available new on UK ebay in two colours for about £10).

Poor man's PB Swiss insider? First impressions are that it feels a little cheap. The blue cap looks and feels a lot like one of the yellow plastic containers inside Kinder eggs, and the bit storage thingy bangs around inside the handle. The handle is very smooth and slippery. On the positive side, it's compact and not excessively fiddly to get to and change the bits. The removable magnetic bit holder is possibly a step up from the PB Swiss as you can swap it to a quick release bit holder or what ever is your preference.

I expected the cap would unscrew, but there's a spring and a rod that goes through the cap and into the handle. It works well, but does not feel durable.

IMG_8292.jpg

Maybe a useless idea, but with the small dividers removed, four power bits could be stored in the handle.
