Some examples of papers from my shelf

Just few examples from my old Stahlwille Manoskop collection. While outmoded the mkp and cmkp scale is aligned to the values for torque published in Porsche factory workshops manuals for my car. Presumably that same old world measurement system was used for air-cooled VW factory publications at that time?

Not VW but example of Porsche factory special tool set in my collection, it’s in a nice wooden box. It’s mainly Stahlwille tools some have P** designation printed in Porsche factory workshop manuals and Porsche spezialwerkzeug publications of sixties and early seventies

Back to the original question in my catalogue and associated price list dated mid seventies gives the set tailored for VW at that time as number 1000. Porsche was 1100 ( still was last I looked) . Could be supplemented with 1001 which had further recommended VW tools. These came in the Stahlwille Rollmaster of that era .

See photo with red circle. This is a British market catalogue mid seventies so term “continental” refers to European marques other than British. It had for example Mercedes, Porsche , BMW and Opel. The configuration was different for each marque.

I’m no VW expert but the sets 1000 and 1001 referred to comprised a selection collated from the vw relevant tools listed main pages. Similar to how hazet did it in their catalogues.

Not VW special tools from likes of Matra although some general tools might’ve special tools catalogues so had a VW special tool reference. My own interest is Porsche but I do have some but not all VW factory special tool catalogues circa 72/3 era but that’s because Porsche official service centres also required to hold some of those in the minimum tools and equipment holdings as specified by Porche or Concessionaire .

(I’m posting here for first time today so forgive me if this is already known and very obvious to experienced forum members).

I have both Hazet and Stahlwille tools and toolboxes which were brands that Porsche specified in the minimum holdings publications I have several Hazet Assistents and two Stahlwille to hold the sets tailored to the marque . Each have different strengths and weaknesses.. I marginally prefer Stahlwille to work with — more stable if using the top . The ability to collapse the Assistent plus the way it has accessories like the lamp or screen rubber pads or holders for Bosch/Sun test equipment can be useful. The Porsche factory race team used the Rollmaster around 1973 there are photographs of Assistents in various places in the factory and in dealers around that era. This is a factory Stahlwille Rollmaster in use at the Targa Florio of 1973, an event that the Carrera RSR won outright. Here pressed into service when one RSR was significantly damaged in the practice. Other photos exist of the Rollmaster in use with the factory Martini sponsored RSR fo example Teloche the garage the factory race team used as base for Le Mans efforts over many years, perhaps making that the Rollmaster a more apt choice for owners of the genuine 72/3 homologation special model of that era?

Thanks for all this information. I thought most German tool makers would have a list of VW tools in their catalogs. Most of the time you only see Hazet.

I have a nearly identical set that came in my Facom Expert / Mac tool general tool kit. These are great screwdrivers and very comfortable in the hand!

Bost was acquired by Facom in 1982, if I am reading that stuff correctly.
Facom was subsequently acquired by Stanley Black & Decker (2006 ?)

Yes, definitely Bost, or at least the Bost pattern.

O.k. tools. Perfectly acceptable mid grade. Some of the drivers (especially the hard handle versions) that they made for other companies in the group, were perhaps nicer tools.

The Facom drivers were / are a notch above in my opinion. The blades are better all round. But the Bost pattern are good value.

USAG used the Bost design, they now use the Facom handle design. Maybe they are better drivers nowadays, or they just changed the handles....
However the Stanley set was below 20 Euro at the rainforest store .....so...

Yes, Bost, Expert, some Britool, some USAG, and a host of others, are all basically the same.

Facom, no. They offer a variety of different drivers, but they are all different to the Bost.

Unless they have sneaked in some cheapo ones that I’m not aware of!

Have you looked at the racheting Wera Vario? I understand it uses same 6mm blades. It may only lock in one position as is it may not support the DriveLoc dimples.

I'm not seeing any difference other than that P3 Britool with the hex shank at the front end of the handle.

I bought a Wera Vario with the same thought. It doesn’t really work unless you’re willing to remove the Wiha System6 blades with a pliers wrench.

“Mortar troughs”. Not to be used with cranes/hoists. Don’t know how many of these I have purchased over the years, but with every upcoming project/site I tend to think “one or two more of them would be nice to have”. Also they are cheap, 8 Euro/ 9,36 USD each. But I think they off-set the true costs of these with the separately sold lids, I have a few of them as well and they run almost double the price of a crate/trough. The only issue I have with them, they have an unbelievable bad stench to them when they are new. I try to only buy them during warmer weather and let sun & fresh air do their thing for a while before even thinking of using or leaving them inside. I could actually already smell them while still two aisles away at the store. And when I bring them home from the store, I wish I had a pick-up.

Hazet 612N 11mm brake tool. Had to replace a hard line on the Volvo. This was the smallest head 11mm flare wrench I could find. Minimal flex with the shrouded opening on one side. Broached fairly well in the other. Bend angles were also well thought out.

So the Pressol oiler kept weeping small amounts of oil after putting it back after each use. It was not coming from the nozzle/ drip catcher - and always accumulated around the base. I reached out to Pressol, they made me go through the supplier for warranty and today that package was picked up, as they wanted the, likely defective, oiler back. So they should have this sometime next week. Let’s see how that goes from here. The only other explanation I can possibly think off is that the oil is too thin for this type oiler. But I really don’t know how realistic that is and no one in the process so far asked what oil I’m using with it. So I did include the spec sheet. We’ll see I guess.

Bahco wrenches type UL.
This type was intended to be a simpler type of wrench. It was in production from the 1950s to the late 1970s. All made in Sweden, later they were replaced by the UD type, wich was more like the other Bahco wrenches in design, both types were in production at the same time for a period, the UD type was mainly made in Argentina.
There is altleast four different versions of the UL wrenches, without holes in the handle, with holes and made for holes, but not drilled. Then you got som differences in the markings.

15mmx18mm is an unusual combination of sizes.

Agreed. It is however a standard pairing in ISO 1085.

From what I can see in the image I linked, and what comes up searching Google, there are different size pairings e.g. 14x15
