This is the largest thread on the board, with hundreds of thousands of views and someone is complaining about what's supposed to be included?:wtf:
I like this thread because it highlights tools I don't see in my neighborhood and gives you a different view of how things get done across a large pond. Thanks for keeping it alive.

Everybody knows that this thread is really called "Tools from Germany" but they're too polite to say it. Tools from other countries are allowed in on the honor system. :)

Since the Old World includes Africa, can we see some African tools?

Monte,

Do you own any Olfa knives that use snap-off blades?

If yes, which knife body is better built (NT or Olfa)?

Which snap-off blades stay sharper the longest (NT or Olfa)?

If you have not used the NT knife, can you please post feedback later to the above questions?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,
yes i own 1 Olfa knive (pictured below the stanley knive) but it´s the simplest and cheapest one (3.79 dollar) so to compare apples with apples you have to compare them in the same price range and function but my other 9mm size cutters are from different price regions. I think the major difference is not in the quality but in the function of the lock mechanism (auto lock, slide lock, screw lock) , the quality among the price range will be about the same at least for me it seems so when i look at the store and compare Olfa to the others (KDS, NT, Stanley, Tajima). I use blades from "Lutz", Stanley, noname, noname "solingen", KDS and NT. There seems to be not a big difference among these with the no name on the last place and "Lutz" and the black colored KDS blades on top. With the amount of my knives it can take a while until i can report back about the NT knive since my new favourite is the Stanley knife...

Anyone know if any of the Germany makers have an e-torx set that isn't swivel? All I've seen from Hazet & Stahlwille (from Samstag Sales) is the swivel sets. If anyone knows of a good selection found from resellers in the US, I'd appreciate hearing about them.

i would contact dealers and ask for them (and to find the best price)

iirc you preferred Stahlwille ??

Actually, China used to make high quality goods, at least in Fifties (1950 -1959).
That time relations between China and Soviet Union seemed to be cloudless and a lot of stuff imported from China was on sale in Russia. All goods were of exceptional quality. I could recall very good Chinese thermoses, dress & cloth, shades, china sets, even underwear. The dress probably wouldn't compete with the latest and greatest Paris fashions but lasted for years.
So, it was actually West who spoiled China when started looking for a cheap labor.

You still can find these nice thermoses from Fifties in Russian kitchens.

Japan *is* definitely Old World™; China on the other hand, and as far as tools go, is New World: profit driven "Corporate America" **** tools for undiscerning lusers that have sold their jobs and the future of their kids to Walmart and Wall Street...

I agree 100%.

But, Japanese tool quality and Chinese tool quality are not the same thing.

I agree.

we have already seen South-African tools.

might be interesting to see somme egyptian ones too.

We need more tools from Africa and the middle east in here. I know we see on occasion stuff from Israel or Suid Afrika so there has to be more.

Also since everyone else is sharing their opinion I would prefer if chinese(or similar) tools even rebrands are kept out of this thread. They aren't the same quality and the hurt western economys in the long run. As for Japan theres no reason why it shouldn't be included the quality is very high and the designs are unique not crude copies of tools from EU or USA like you see with chinese tools.

I agree with "american lockpicker" and "Fedwrench" 100%. In addition, since "Monte" started this thread (my favorite on GJ), is the "unofficial moderator", and keeps this thread alive with his nearly daily postings, I think we should respect his wishes to showing tools from outside the "old world" like U.S.A., Canada, and China.

The two reasons (amongst others) I enjoy this thread is that (until today) it has remained apolitical and not spoiled by bickering (unlike some past threads on GJ). This "Tools From the Old World" should be all about high quality tools, discussing them (including advantages and disvantages), and sharing dealer contact information for purchasing them.

IT'S THAT SIMPLE!!!

bart1,

Can you please post a wide angle view of your Japanese hand tool? I am guessing your tool is a plier but I am not sure.

Thanks,

Dave

"Welper" welding pliers i think

Basically this thread is about tools from outside the USA because in this forum there are already about 94306 threads about tools from the USA so i thought 1 thread about non USA tools is OK :)
Since it´s not a political forum or about society etc. tools from all over the world are welcome, not only from Europe but also Japan/Asia, Africa, South America etc. since it´s a tool forum... about tools...

Agreed, a great thread. I've found myself reading pretty much the whole thing. I didn't see any complaints about whats supposed to be include. I did read a couple of posts about what shouldn't be included though.

Everybody knows that this thread is really called "Tools from Germany" but they're too polite to say it. Tools from other countries are allowed in on the honor system. :)

I M AGREE !!!!!!!!!!!! for all of ur opinion for old world tools:rocker::rocker:

Speaking of non-made in germany tools. I got me these here recently.
"Toolcraft" cable knife and "Compass" Screwdriver Set.
I was rather sceptical about such brands but regarding the relatively low price, I gave it a try. Now I must say I'm pleasantly suprised. The finish of both tools is great. Definitely no ****. I'm still sceptical about the blade though but the diamond tip screwdrivers did fine so far.

Awesome Japanese made plier:rocker:
I know how to identify JIS screws. But how can you tell if a tip is JIS?

From my observation,no specific marking to know a JIS type philips screwdrivers..usually they mark with P1, P2, P3 or P.1,P.2,P.3 at their product. (standard philips screwdrivers mark PH1, PH2, PH3).
If u still confuse how to choose a JIS philips screwdriver, I strongly recommended u to purchase Vessel screwdriver because is confirm with JIS of philips bits:rocker:
Pic below for ur reference:D

Hazet has a complete selection of Torx sockets that you can get individually or in sets (e.g. the 854 T 1/4" socket set). You can have a complete pdf catalog at hazet.com and if you are interested in buying Hazet tools, you can contact me anytime for a detailed offer. Shipping is 5 days and the prices in the homeland of Hazet beat US suppliers most of the time.

I think Felo ?

Heyco still offer your screwdrivers but also a modern version (see link) which looks like Felo.

Thanks Monte.

No, i dont have any 8150. Nice ratchet, i will order any for take some pictures.

Good idea ! :) The back of the ratchet looks exactly like Snap-On with the same patent numbers on the black plate, the website says it has 80 teeth !
(maybe thats the reason the Snap-On "Dual 80" ratchets don´t say "Made in USA" :) :deadhorse :))
