Made in UAE(United Arab Emirates) is an unusual COO but the stuff seems decent and everything I've seen from there is European designed. :) If anyone has seen any tools from there please put them up.

Also I went to an out of the way building materials store to buy an English made Stanley plane I had seen earlier but it was sold and the newer model was assembled in mexico and cost $15 more. :(

Monte, I thought I'd ask your input and advice over these Gedore offset wrenches please! I picked up this set of 6-41mm wrenches a long time ago (okay, maybe only two years or so ago, before my knowing about GJ!). They are unused old stock, part of a container load of tools the vendor picked up from the UK. I'll try and remember more of the details, but a lot's happened since then! :dunno:

They are old, and a mixture of German and South African in origin, from the No 2 series? (They're at which number now? :)) I haven't had much - well, any - opportunity to use them (yet), but every time I pick them up, I can't help but feel there is something wrong with the coating? They are not smooth like other brands I've used, in fact they feel horrible to the touch... were it not for the fact that they have virtually all sizes up to 32mm, I think I'd flick them now... do the pics show the finish on these, and do they look okay?

The Gedore stuff I've seen and used (1990's and earlier) has been not quite up to par in the finish department. Strong as heck though.
I think of Gedore as the inner beauty performer. :D

The finish on all my Gedore tools are "matt". They aren't the most shiny or smoothest tools, but they a though as nails!

I know we had the following many times in here but I just had to load up some detailed pictures. This thread gives a great view at so many tools where the manufacturers sites lack and helped me a lot with my purchase decisions. So thanks everybody for your tons of pictures! All I can give in return is pictures also. Maybe those help others as well. Keep on!

finish? that's for merkans! real men don't use shiny chrome!:lol_hitti
what's this obsession with finish & perceived "quality" instead of fit, usability, durability and real, every day use quality???

:dunno:

more seriously, i do have an old Gedore N°2b 18-19mm, way older than yours, and the finish is quite plain and, yes, different than a more recent N°2 20-22mm... it has withstood three generations of hard users better than the newer one(already retired due to chrome peeling and a bit more abuse and exposure to acids than was adequate...:rolleyes2).

so there is nothing wrong with the finish of your wrenches, it's just plain, utilitarian instead of "oh so shiny!" and slippery, that's it. just use 'em!

i'll post pixes of both later...

Sorry Cosmik, don't misunderstand me - I've no issue with believing that Gedore do good stuff, and I'm certainly no follower of the 'It must be shiny/have chrome' school. I can certainly live with utilitarian, if that is how they are/were meant to be.

But I've not felt/touched new Gedore tools, or old stuff belonging to anyone else for that matter. These are old, I knew that when I purchased them, and I had/have no issue with that. They were offset wrenches, with a huge size range, and of German manufacture (of sorts). But these are the only tools I have touched/used that feel weird in my hands, like it's leaving a residue? I dunno... I will keep them around for a while longer methinks.

mmmm... looks like you missed the obvious ":lol_hitti" there!
that's what happen when reading northern hemisphere posts upside down...:D

there is also the possibility that your wrenches are cadmium coated, although i'm not sure that Gedore used to do this, which is equally toxic and "eeeeky" to the touch...

the good side is that they'll give you smoother hands by having you use gloves!

@ Monte

how does the Toptul compare to the Facom 440 when it comes to fastener fit?

The fitment is identical

neu102.jpg

Monte:
I hope you give it much use to the bits and the wrenche to give us your opinion about the quality of Bianditz and Toptul.

i will use them but it can take a while until i have a opinion :)

Servus, Monte,
The Stahlwille screwdriver pictured in your post closely resembles my dad's Witte "Quadro" screwdriver:
Hope this helps,
Chreese

aahhhh thanks !!! i think we have the answer !!!!

Directly from Germany:

nice ! the new catalog !!! Did you order some pliers too or only the catalog ?
:)

Can u please insert a 13mm nut/bolt at a open end Facom
+ Toptul? and take some pics or short video:)
Btw:Facom 440 have a very nice finishing:drool:

are the pics above ok ?

btw.: cable cutters:)

neu105.jpg

neu107.jpg

@sick puppy:
the newer Gedore tools look different-they have a brighter matt chrome finish. Older tools looked more "steel grey"
or had a uglier finish. The new stuff looks pretty good imho (if you like a sandblasted matt finish :))

@T20
nice pictures!!!!

Thanks Monte,

I ordered a metric set of the 440's from The Tool Academy in the UK, a lot cheaper if you go to their website, rather than their ebay store.

I got a 1/4" and 1/2" socket set from Koken today. These are my first Koken tools and so far so good. They seem to very well made and I will give them a try this weekend. I also took some photos to compare with my Facom and Beta sockets. The Beta and the Koken have a striking similarity in fit and finish. I believe I read somewhere that Koken made sockets for Beta :headscrat.

ok think i got the hang of it!

Got these things because Imperial/American sizes are very difficult to get here in France on a Wednesday afternoon!

The vice cost £10 and the spanners averaged ot to about 20p each. The vice replaces a piece of sh1t that was made in China and broke and will probably come back as another piece of sh1t after it gets melted down again!

Got to love the boot sales. Was embarrassing how many bits of metal I was picking up each time from people who thought they were getting rid of garbage. OK so they aren't the latest Snap-On or Facom but they will do a job and in the right light some of them are quite pretty! ;)
