I am torn! I am usually good at deciding, however I can't pick one. I need a 1/2" ratchet! I only have 2 in 3/8, and one in 1/4. I want something from Europe.

Gedore, Facom, Stahlwille, or Hazet!? too many choices. What are all of your recommendations? They're very expensive... so I can only buy one.

I would like something of a pear-head shaped ratchet, but round is okay too, as long as it has a few thousand teeth :D

but not France! don't buy french stuff, it's way too cheesy for your taste! :D

although i do not like most of Facom stuff(too shiny and expensive for what it really is) i do really like the x.151 and x.161 rats(where "x" stands for "R" for 1/4", "J" for 3/8" and "S" for 1/2" and so on...) and good news for you: they're not making'em in France but in Italy, in Gemonio more exactly. :D
still, i wouldn't buy one new for retail price being the cheap, cheesy ******* that i am that now discovered that on the other side of the Rhine there's more appropriate tools:spit:... if you can find the S.161 for peanuts go for it young man!

the Hazet 900-series rats are truly awesome: you can beat back an invasion of canucks like that of 1812 with one and still wrench happily thereafter with it... worth it's price without a doubt. you won't find many non-american(read "not snap-on nutcases or tools") on this forum that would let go their own without it being in their dead hand...

as for Stalhwille and Gedore: if no reasonably priced Hazet is available: well, they're really good too along with their sockets! :D

round head: Facom S.161 with more teeth than a ghetto loan shark.:lol_hitti

what will you sell your second kidney for then? :bounce:

I've never said anything bad about France! I've never been there. Maybe the 4 yrs of "forced" french classes have biased me a little.

Does it say "Made in Italy" on them? I don't have an Italian tools... what a good excuse to buy one! :)

Hahahaha. That's good stuff lol. I might have to go for this 900-series thingymajigger after I looked it up. It sure is pretty! The 916GK I think.. it's 150$ though! I might have to sell more than the kidney :shocking:

They have loan sharks over there? And I'm not selling my second kidney! That one is my favorite, and I kind of need it to live. I mean, I couldn't enjoy all my tools without it, so I guess it stays :D

But the advantage of the Stanley is, when I bend the heck out of it and take it back to Walmart, I get to see the look of O_O on their faces when I exchange it :D

I'll probably be getting a Craftsman at some point, 1/2 at least. It's cheap and I can warranty it in 5 minutes if need be... and while I'd love a hazet, I can't sell any of my Kidneys just yet :)
I see your point, I just keep forgetting about tool warranty in the US. It is not common over here. Yes our Facom dealer offers warranty, I am not sure about Stahlwille. Recently a dealer for Toptul offers warranty as well. This is such a small market and dealers come and go. Actually I think few tool-sellers in Iceland qualify as delers to begin with.. many of them trade with dealers in europe.

I have never gotten a replacement for damaged/broken tool. Not even tried.
Thankfully el-cheap o Asian tools are getting better. More and more shops over here are using them. Local prices on quality tools are "up there" $400+ is the price tag for the smallest 3/8 socket sets from Facom/Beta, for Stahlwille it was $500+ last time I checked.

I just love the warranty thing we have going here. I mean, people complain it's slow sometimes and whatnot, but generally, you can get a brand new tool from a bunch of manufacturers with very little hassle. It's nice :D

How many sockets are in those sets!? :eyecrazy:

This set is priced $505. Using the current exchange rate. However this is old price - this dealer does not update his webpage often and does not sell through it either. I would not be surprised if the price is significantly higher today.

*Edit 12 july.
This set cost today around $350, price on website is wrong.*

Oh... wow. That's horrible! I'll pray for lower tool prices for you daily, good sir. That's rediculous.

You are on an island a bit far away, but cmon, that's really high. I thought I was getting ripped off for my FHX80, but I guess not.

Cliceu, how do you like your Gedore ratchet so far? I was looking at that specific model, but of course I don't get to handle it before I buy..

nice Wiha haul !!!
so the bank crisis finally had something good :D
Finally, yes. I was among those here that saw it coming and it almost did cost me my mental health arguing with friends and family to prepare for the worst - when everything was going so well prior to the collapse.

Olafur: So - my pin punch hunting trip went quite well after all!
without buying pin punches :D :headscrat :D
:D :headscrat
Perhaps here we have the difference between a German and an Icelander :D
I was so happy finding wiha pliers on sale I did not care I did not find any pin punches. Of course this makes no sense - a pin punch mission is NOT accomplished without any pin punches. Your logical and well organized German brain spotted this in a second!:lol_hitti:beer:

ps: what do you need the 3/4" tools for ?
I sometimes work on full size trucks (Scania, MAN, e.t.c), construction machinery ,modified 4x4 SUV's and so on. Actually it is not bad idea to have one 3/4" braker bar and 3/4-1/2 connector (or few 3/4" sockets) for the DIY guy. This takes the strain off the 1/2" gear like braker bars. Cheap 3/4" T-bar can handle much more than even the best 1/2" brakers.

@americanlockpicker: Very nice Fabrique-Nationale:bounce: What's the price in USA for 5.7 ammmos ?

I paid $50 for 2 boxes tax included since I'm a good customer. :)

I'm hoping to pick up 1000 rounds of sporting ammo off the FN forum and 500 rounds of armor piercing ammo online later this year.

I also have some Finnish scissors that have lasted me years. Those Finnish can make some left-hand scissors!

Must be talking about Fiskars. I have quite a few pairs and one is left handed. :)

One pic of my French/Taiwan collection.

I really like the plastic clip, It is brilliant and I will probably buy 440 Italian Facom combination spanners in a clip like this for my travel kit. The 4-in-1 concept is interesting and the quality is impressive. Feels better than the others. Size combination could be better for me. No 14mm end.

While it lacks a lot of the practical design features of US folders, my Maserin knives are very nice to look at! Like a lot of things Italian, sometimes function can be secondary to design...:)

Today I went to two main stores, to try to find pin punches and more but what was left was mainly strange looking chisels. However one store had clearing sale on discontinued items. Yes they had this "junk" :) on sale to clear for more "Hurricane" quality tools. :lol_hitti
This one was 25% of original price;
50% off for these;
I did not leave many survivors. The 300mm Knipex was however not on sale, it is so well known brand it will never go on sale over here.
So - my pin punch hunting trip went quite well after all!

Nice shopping, You lucky! here it hard to find Germany made Wiha pliers.:rocker:

yes Fein ! ;)
good cell phone camera !!

no, not magnetized. The Proturn drivers don´t appear in the Wiha catalog so i can´t tell you. Since your Proturn blades are completely plated and the Wiha "Classic" ones too maybe they´re the same`? They only write "Chrom Vanadium" but don´t specify which type.
http://wiha.de/england/Onlineshop/Screwdrivers3/153-Wiha-Classic-Phillips
these should be even stronger/longer lasting:
http://wiha.de/england/Onlineshop/S...ish-R-Phillips/311-Wiha-SoftFinish-R-Phillips

Thank for a link:beer:

@mrtools and Olafur : I paid around EUR 55.92 (incl. VAT) for the Hazet breaker bar. Ok, that's a liitle bit expensive but the price is justified by the quality of the tool, it looks almost indestructible
Btw, it think it's the right time to post some pics of my Hilti electric machines:)
Corded Hilti "TE2" drill + Cordless Hilti "SF121A" drill
ps : Batteries and battery charger are all made in China.

A good quality tools worth your $$$:D
what is actual length your Hazet?
Btw: awesome Hazet goodies!!

Eh, I was kind of hoping they were all "fabriqués en France".

That is a crazy hacksaw though! Looks like it's held up well to whatever use it's seen though. They don't make anything good and stout like that anymore, sadly.

PrecisionTools, that is a beautiful knife! I don't have very many, a Benchmade, one Case, and a SOG, but none of them try very hard in the looks department. Maybe the Case.

Wish I could afford a Sebenza -_-

Farnell COO declarations are not reliable.

http://www.facom.com/fr-en/i-59-Manufacturer.html

This isn't too helpful for the items in question, but gives a little info. The ratchet has no mention of the 161 series being made in Italy.... or anything about the wrenches... a little fishy if you ask me.

I do have a 14 piece set of metric 440 wrenches, $110 shipped to the States. Regardless where they are made, they are a quality set for a reasonable price.

- I am suspect to opine, little used and enjoyed, the ratchet sound very nice, very nice quick release, all sockets (Stahlwille, Hazet and Gedore) fit very well, sturdy construction and good finish as all Gedore.

You can wait for Iceland to enter the EU and things will ease, or maybe have someone buying it and then sent to you... or maybe a tools trip to Europe :D.

Some USA brands:
Klein tools, www.kleintools.com are very popular among electricians, well-made and very durable. My second favorite kind after Knipex.

Klein pliers, 9" Linesman, 150-year Anniversary edition 8" Longnose, Angled 8" Diagonal cutter, and 9" Terminal crimper:

Channellock 7" diagonal cutter. http://channellock.com/ is an average-quality brand, very common, USA-made, no frills, just does what it is supposed to do. Personally, not one of my favorite brands.

Average quality? Man, you must have some nice tools! :D I like Klein better too, but they're even more expensive. I prefer to get the Channellock versions (for price and quality, but also because home depot is a long ways away and they sell the Klein ones )

And I kind of prefer Dewalt be made in Mexico. It's not China like a lot of brands, or Malaysia like Bosch. At least it's sort of close.

I was thinking of getting some of the Dewalt 18v stuff, how's it working out for you?

No offence. By average quality I meant compared to Knipex, look at some pics I have posted on page 330 of this thread. If you look at Home Depot prices of Klein tools and Online prices of Knipex, the Knipex is maybe 10% more compared to Klein. Try Knipex Cobra or even better Knipex wrench pliers and I garantee you will never touch Channellock again! :lol_hitti I know, it happened to me already!
So, if you are looking to upgrade, by all means get Knipex, it's a life-long investment that will itself pay-off at least a dozen of times. Just make sure these tools do not walk away from you :)

I am quite happy with DeWalt cordless tools, have most of my corded tools by Milwaukee (Made in USA) and Bosch (mine are made in Switzerland, not Malaysia, had to pick them carefully). Things I like about dewalt are durability, plenty of torque and power, battery life is very good, their new 18V Li-Ion batteries fit older-generation 18V tools, you just need a different charger. Had this DC720 drill for over 3 years already, daily use, some abuse, no problems at all.
