I bought them at the "Bauhaus" big box store here in Germany...
www.bauhaus.info

they look about like this:

...available from many brands like Blaklader, Mascot, Snickers, Kansas, Dickies etc....

i´like them too :D:):rocker:

Flex, Fein and Metabo all make awesome angle grinders

nice :D:bowdown:
Stille Nacht ....sounds german....."Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht. Alles schläft, einsam wacht...." a famous christmas song...
It's a special Christmas beer from De Dolle in Belgium, that's why it's called that name. The name is Flemish/Dutch, but I guess those words happen to be the same in German. If you ever see it for sale, try it. It's very nice and very potent. The alcohol content is over 12% :spit:

Usag number 252 10/11 mm open end spanner

This was another 'bargain' ebay tool, which I bought partially because i haven't seen any Usag tools in person before, apart from their tyre levers (which seem to have been de-facto in any tyre shop/garage over here at one point, and are still common now) not that familiar with Usag, so not sure when they made this style of wrench, I'd guess its fairly old though, maybe 80's or 90's at latest?

It is a really nice quality spanner, the weight and feel of the steel and finish seem similar to stahlwille tools, I am amazed at how thin it is though, possibly the thinnest jaws I've seen on an open end wrench.

Some comparison pics next to a Snap On SOEXM10 (10mm flank drive plus)
and a Stahwille Series 13 10mm both of which are pretty thin and compact in their own right (don't have a 10mm Hazet or Gedore to compare)

Jaws on the Usag are the biggest side on, but by no means unwieldy or ugly.

Its by far the thinnest though, forgot to measure it but its around half the thickness of the snap on and noticeably thinner than the stahwille

not used it in anger so I can't comment on jaw spread or strength :lol_hitti

Would really love to get some more of these but as this is the only Usag spanner i have ever seen that may be a long term search :(

open end wrenches usually have thinner open ends than on combination wrenches.

The Hazet 450 are also thin like that.
I think the reason is that in a traditional situation, you are not using the open end wrench for breaking loose the fastener. You use the box wrench for that. The priority with a open end wrench is convenience fitting in small spaces, etc. But in the real world, sometimes we do need to use the open end to break a fastener loose.
That's where a combination wrench comes in. Since it's already too long, there's no harm in making it a little thicker on the open end.

USAG made the Facom combination wrenches before Toptul, so it's likely that everyone has seen a USAG without knowing it

I had never even thought of that, will have to find some combination wrenches to compare it to, only similarly sized combination wrenches i have are 10/13mm heyco DIN ones (from car tool kits) which are a lot thicker

I do have a (single) hazet 450, a 17/19mm one which i use a lot, don't have a corresponding Hazet combination so hadn't really taken note of it , but i did notice its a lot thinner than the Gedore one i have.

Didn't know that about Usag, knew that they were owned by Facom since 1991ish though until Stanley got their hands on the name

Ratchet you can check the thickness from the catalog.

The Gedore No7 have the same thickness with the open end wrenches. The 1B have a thicker open end because it is longer.

The same goes for the Hazet open end with the 603. The 600N is thicker but also longer.

The thickness is proportional to the length. There is no reason to make the open end very thick in a short wrench.

The gedore stubby ratcheting wrench has even less thickness and width in the open end because you can not spread the jaws with that length.

In most brands you will see that when the open end wrench has the same length with the combination, the thickness of the open end is identical.

The thickness is also is proportional to the width of the open end. The snap on are thicker than Hazet but the width is smaller (if I remember correctly).

All is a matter of design and needs of.

When is necessary to break loose a bolt with one open end, I usually use the bigger adjustable that I can (if I can).

My Gedore 3/4 Af socket set finally arrived today. Didn't really need it as I have a few cheapy sets but for £67 to the door I couldn't refuse it.

It has only been used a handful of times.

And obvious Garage journal tradition of taking the ratchet apart for regreasing. This ratchet is actually surprisingly light.

The dead locking mechanism on these sets is pretty sweet. Sockets and extensions effortlessly push on and then press the button to effortlessly remove them.

Word of warning though - The locking pin on the ratchet and t-bar do not work well with standard dedent sockets as they fall off easily. However you can use standard ball / spring ratchets and accessories with these pin type sockets and extensions no problem.

And a size comparision ( 17mm Gedore 1/2 drive, 13mm Wera 3/8 drive and a 1/4 drive 1/4 AF socket)-

Also recently picked up a 12" long Gedore chisel.

A DFM Corona (Germany) mini file set. (Bahco 10" for comparison)

And a small Felo order from a couple of weeks ago (courtesy of the Felo Shop).

Plus / Minus PH1 and PH2.
1/4 bit driver
10 and 12mm slotted chisel drivers. (The 12mm is a bit of a beast)
A 7mm flexi nut driver for jubilee clips.

I would really recommend these flexi drivers. You have about a +/- 90 degree range and are not at all stiff.
They just don't compare to those nasty spring things you would get in cheap screwdriver sets, such as below:

783125.jpg

Finally a photo of my main screwdriver and bits drawer as it currently stands. Interestly everything looks cleaner than it actually is :dunno: -

  • Wera PH & slotted chisel driver set, Wera torx set and standard Felo PZ and slotted set. Space left for a 8mm chisel driver.
  • Felo bit ratchet set
  • Bondhus hex keys
  • Milwaukee bit box (which is basically only used as a spares box for my impact driver. Commonly uses bits and adapters are kept in a pot on the bench)

I seem to end up doing a fair bit of electrical work so also have a VDE Wera set elsewhere, and also some Wiha at home.

Rebranded screwdrivers from LUX, unfortunately they are no longer available.

If I had known, then brought me a few more, because the LUX were cheaper than the originals by Felo.

Hello everybody!

Again, with all the things with the new house and lots happening at my work I have not been as active here as I would have wanted to. But now something happened that made me have to post here. I got a packade from Cosmic Binturong, who unfortunately has been missing here for quite a while. A while ago we made a "package exchange", when he wanted some stuff that I had. It took a while for it to arrive, but now it's here and I'm very happy.

Hello TjoFrasse, i'm terribly sorry for the delay, the package has undergone at leats four or five revisions and was lingering with a couple others ready to be sent in a cupboard until my beloved one found them and shipped them the same day(she has way more sense than me, lucky me!:D)

we're pretty happy that you were pleased by what was inside the bubbles!

sadly, the Gedore flexi-rat never made it to Marseille, i've searched eveywhere when i got back home and not a trace of it(found a new cat though :headscrat).

*snip!*

Small tube cutter, Bizline. I would guess from China.

not sure, i asked a BizLine rep and he said either Spain or Taiwan(looks more like a Super-Ego than a PRC one, it's quite robust and hefty too: 210g!)... hope you're enjoying it too!

I would like to thank Cosmic Binturong if he reads this, I'm very happy with what I got in relation to what i sent.

Now I will get starting reading all the pages that I have missed! Happy easter/spring equinox!

thank you TjoFrasse, i'm doing the same now(just finished the last year or so of post...).

"Top Craft"/"KWB Aggresso Power" wire wheels

lucky you! here Aldi is mostly full of **** as far as tools are concerned, we don't even get the Targon bitbox from USH that you posted nor the red Kress rebranded powertools...

(Monte, have you received the flat pack that was sent along TjoFrasse bubble?)

I've been on a Japanese tool buying spree.

Vessel stubby screwdriver

*snip!*

Hilka spline sockets

*snip!*

i'm  all over that Vessel stubby now...

where did you found those Hilka sockets?

Usag number 252 10/11 mm open end spanner

*snip!*

very nice old USAG wrench, the later ones are definitely not so nice... :(

ok folks, that's it for today, i'm back and will slowly what has found a home in our toolboxes(and what must be going out too!).

cheers!

There are only 4 puller manufacturers in Germany: Gedore (formerly "Baldur"), Kukko, Nexus and Buco.
The current Hazet pullers are supplied by Gedore (before from Kukko) and the Stahlwille pullers are from Kukko. Beta for example buys from Nexus.

I just bought these two knipex pliers for the collection.
The bent needle nose pliers has a big gap, with some pressure it is less of a gap, but it never closes completely.
As the price was low (€15 a piece) it's not a big issue, but I am a bit disappointed in the quality.
Is this normal for this model? :dunno:

Hmm, the Felo 45o bent nose insulated pliers I just got has the same gap. I'm pretty sure Knipex makes Felo pliers. I think the gap might be by design.
