yes, strange but stranger things happen regularly on this forum...

indeed, may also be because Wiha QC could be on a slippery slope...

for me, controversy still exist about some QC lapses and not on CoO of Wiha stuff: still only .de, .ch and .vn as far as i know or, methinks thinks i know, well, until proven wrong on that point... :D

i do not have a full drawer, more like thirty tools plus around a hundred bits or more but the recently made stuff i had was sub-par as far as finish of the handles was concerned and i'm talking about a small Picofinish T1, a 4mm ESD micro handle, a TorqueVario 1/4" and a 4mm bit adapters and a Proturn 3k bitholder. still, i very much do like the bits and older screwies but am quite annoyed to have to finish the work myself for the price paid whatever that price may have been. :(and i'm not even talking about the retarded attitude of Wiha France...

anyway, the point about CoO is moot since we all agree that it's still, as of now, made in Germany.

hahhahaha the truth...:p

Maybe, but my point was that I thought it was strange he raised the same question of COO base don a sticker that has obviously been added at the point of sale (or by the wholesaler in his country) rather than by the manufacturer.

If I recall correctly, the origin of that sticker was pointed out fairly early in that thread (although many people chose to ignore it and jump on the conspiracy bandwagon instead). Raising it again takes on the appearance of creating controversy where none actually exists.

On the Wiha quality issue itself; I have a drawer-full and no issues, so perhaps I've been lucky. On the other hand I've paid I think just over £3/driver on average, so it's not like they're so expensive that I'd be shocked to see the odd issue pop up.

only tell me why some stubbies are clearly marked on the handle as made in germany and have better finish and some are junk and not marked on the handle, and we are talking about same screwdriver model, same manufacturer and same price. isnt that just odd? :dunno:

I believe this same issue might be happening with the Wiha Magnetizer/Demagnetizer.
1st pic shows no COO.
3rd shows Germany.

Maybe counterfeit or fake of Wiha products ???
Let see what is inside... this magnetizer cracks open easily, not glued or so and there's gap between each plastic parts. Sure there're magnets inside :), normal ferrite one, not earth rare neodymium. ;)

mmmm... sorry, i've been fooled by the sanding disc support which is Rupes-branded... :(
it's italian though! after some summary cleaning i can say that it's a lowlife known as a Telesch C36AS and, sadly, not an old Rupes.

so three euros is about what it's worth, don't you think so? :D
for 3 eurobucks it´s a good deal !!:rocker:

argh! you're feeding, as the official german tool minister, the paranoia over Wiha's stubbies' countries of origin!!!

might have something to do with the forging dies ?

Are these any good?
I need a orbital sander for my toolbox redo and I can buy one in a good state with some new ancillaries for €15,-.
For 15.- it´s good enough :)

OW Tool brothers... I've decided I need a decent centre punch. What do I need to know and what do you recommend?

Parameters are:

- Must be available in the UK.
- Must be good quality.
- Not overly expensive as it won't see daily use.
- I'll be working mostly with Al and occasionally steel

I've scoured ebay and apart from the junk I've seen offerings from Facom, Starrett, Draper Expert (same as Gedore punches I think - with the gold finish), and CK all at fairly reasonable prices (£5-£10 or so depending on size). Any specialty brands I should be looking at?

For light use is automatic worth the money? Is there much benefit to having a variety of sizes (a set)?

While I'm at it, I could use advice on a scribe as well.

Thanks! :beer::thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup::beer:

Centre? :D

Anyways, I'm hoping there's a Starrett dealer in the UK, because that's all I use for punches. Amazon should have a few in stock.. there's many to choose from, so be sure to check the sizes out on the Starrett website first. Use mine a lot in hard(ish) steel and it's still going fine.

Auto-center punches are something I almost never use.. but if you're going to be using one a lot of the time, you can't go wrong with a smaller Starrett automatic (so you can turn down the striking force and put a nick in the aluminum as opposed to a crater). As for different sizes, I've never owned a Starrett auto personally, but we use them at work and at school sometimes. Those ones are many years old, and still function OK. If you worked with many different materials then I would say yes, get a set. But for most everyone else, it is not necessary at all. If you don't feel like researching sizes, I'd say go with the middle size, though that still might be a bit much for aluminium.

Scribes... I use a "Rico Marker" retractable..

Rico Marker Link

Carbide tip, length adjustable, very nice. Monte has one as well, maybe he has a little input to give here. I would think you would have no problem getting that (they rebrand them for many companies) in the UK.

If not, something like this would do you fine, especially with the materials you're working with: B&S Retractable scribe

Honestly, if you're not using them much like you say, any of these products will last you a lifetime. Not a bad investment... (Now my 100 screwdrivers... not so much!) :D

New arrivals

Hey guys,

I was not active for quite a long time.
Here are my new arrivals from the last two months:

Bahco 3/8" ratchet 7750

Made in Spain

I do not want to start a fight in this thread, but this ratchet has Snap-On internals etc. and is assembled in Spain. If this is the best that Snap-On can be then I am not satisfied.

Here are all my ratchets, just for comparison.

Most used ratchet is the Gedore 1993 U20.

Hazet 610N in 12x13 and 36x41. The little one has the traction profile.

Bondhus graduated hex t-handle set HTX80M

Best hex t-handles in my opinion!
Pure steel.

Ko-ken 3/8" socket set Z-Series RS3800MZ/8

I must admit that I really like Ko-ken (for sockets, extensions and ratchets). The products that I own have the best finish. And Ko-ken products are cheaper than Gedore, Hazet, Stahlwille etc. but at least as good as them.

Ko-ken 3715SLK 3/8" t-handle

Good for motorcycle.

Ko-ken adaptor set PK2346/6

Ko-ken 3/4" 6785 t-handle ready to kill (a screw) :rocker:

:)
The t-shape shank is plain awesome.

NWS QuattroGripp water pump plier 250mm

Very effective, sharp teeth.

My Wiha stubby:

No COO, but every other part in this set says Made in Germany.
As I do not use bits that often, I do not mind.

Last picture shows no new tools, just my used and abused screwdrivers.

Have a nice saturday!

Priory 44, available in 1/16", 3/32", 1/8", 5/32", 3/16" and 1/4". Made in England too. They also have round head ones in a few more sizes and an automatic.

Myself I have a Ticom Ergoform which I really like. It has got replaceable tips that can also be reground.

good news for our North-American friends: some french made Caillau Clic-R pliers are being sold for cheap on the Bay of Evil! :D

they're identical to the ones i posted pics of a few weeks ago but do have green monochrome handles instead of a green and an orange one...

mine:

green Bay ones:

IMG_2205.jpg

bonus point for jarheads: looks like ex-USMC stuff!

needless to say, they retail for quite a few bucks more, even the amazon.com discounted Mayhew branded ones:

red Mayhews version:

71xSvbzc3CL._SL1500_b.jpg

usual disclaimer: no, i do not have any connection to the vendor nor any incentive in this sale... :)
just that they're quite rare at this price even in their country of origin! :(

What are those for, exactly?

Looks like they make a decent bottle opener, if anything. :)

The Eclipse centre punches are very nice. They even have that ellusive England stamp.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Eclipse-Metalworking-Centre-Punch-3-2-4-4-8-6-35-mm-/140589356835?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&var=&hash=item20bbc75723

If only buying one, I'd say go for the 4mm.

They also sell scribes - nothing fancy but may be worth a look.

I do not want to start a fight in this thread, but this ratchet has Snap-On internals etc. and is assembled in Spain. If this is the best that Snap-On can be then I am not satisfied.

I'm happy with the one I have got. Take it apart and grease it and she will become smoother.

But I must admit, a lot of members on this forum like to make a song and dance about Snap On ratchets. But when you finally get one, they are rather underwhelming.

The Stahlwille 1/2" ratchet 512QR N is called "Geschmacksmuster" (design patent) in the 2013 catalogue.

Will there be 1/4" and 3/8" ratchets with quick release and fine tooth mechanism?
I would love them without the rubber grip. I've bought a Ko-ken 1/2" 4750P with 30 teeth that will be delivered next week because I used a ratchet from a friend without the rubber grip on the handle.
Stahlwille makes some ratchets w/o the rubber grip and fine tooth mechanism but with quick release.
Maybe I will be lucky and they add more teeth.

*than
They are small for work in tight places. But Ko-ken and other manufacturers have even smaller ones in their program.
