Ehm well, I don´t want to disappoint anyone - it was only a high-bid auction. As I remember it was around 1000 Euros but I´ll never count up all the extra tools I had to get/will get for it.

The only funny thing (for you guys) is, that I stupidly never thought about the measures of it and so I had to rent a van.

Okay, it had no air-condition or a working socket for my navigation-system, but with about 32°C/89.6°F and a one-way distance from about 350km/217miles, it was nice to drive. The toolbox fit in and I finally found the way home.

I already tried to polish it, but I need to find a better polishing creme. The aluminum jalousie on the other hand was nice to clean with Nevr Dull.

This doesn't look like paint, it is Chrome chipping that you expect after a couple years of hard use, but not after 5 times.

can you return it for refund or replace ? - if not just send Gedore some pictures for there quality management department - maybe they answer and replace the socket and keep us informed.

I contacted the shop and I assume they'll replace the socket. I'll keep you guys informed

1000 Euros is a lot of money but i think it will keep it's value - it sure looks great !!!

For the chrome polish, why don't you try the Autosol that i mentioned before and give us a little review (Neverdull=chemical vs Autosol abrasive) how it works.

Short answer I suppose would be that the copper face can deliver a sharper blow, but still minimise the risk of damaging what's being struck.

Also, the copper/copper mallet weighs nearly 0.5Kg with only a 25mm face, so a fair bit more mass than a similarly sized rubber mallet I imagine.

I used to have a copper Thor hammer from the tool kit of my Austin Healey. On old british cars with wire wheels, they were standard equipment for taking the wheels on and off. How deliciously archaic! It was the most useful hammer ever! I used to use it for everything. It went with the car when I sold it, so I need to get another one now. It's nice to know that they're not too expensive. They just aren't available in Taiwan. Believe me I've looked. I'll have to buy one direct from the UK.

Got these in the mail yesterday.

How do you like the handles on those? Do they leave enough clearance whilst working in tight quarters?
I've had Rennsteig's pin punches with these handles in my Amazon wish-list for a while now but never used handled striking tools before so a bit unsure about them.

It should be an "interim" report, but until I have this complete, I´ll be old and grey...

That type of tool storage makes sense if it's a one man shop or if the boss owns the tools and the techs use the boss's tools.
In America, the culture is for the technicians to own their own tools, so they all have their personal roll cabs.

That type of wall storage is the ultimate for a tool nut to have in his private garage! Useful and on display at the same time.
The only downside is that it forces you to fill it exactly according to their design, otherwise it looks wrong...

They are a pretty common sight in many countries on the Continent, even more so in factories - where Facom seems to be the most abundant, but all of the major European players are around. There's enough accessories available to make your own lay-out.

Ha! Now there's a question! All of them of course!

I tend to work on motorcycles, so the smaller size suits me (although if a great deal on a larger one turned up, I'd grab it as well). Otherwise it depends on what you need to shift I guess. www.thorhammer.com lists all of the sizes, weights and variations if it helps any.

This is exactly like my 1/2" Stahlwille No. 52 sockets looked like! Plus mine are rusted. Three times used...
I received an answer from Stahlwille. They won't replace mine.

As a sidenote: My Stahlwille tools tend to rust more easily than my other tools.

Unfortunately as much as I like ratchets and wrenches from Stahlwille, I will buy only Gedore and Ko-ken in the future.

That looks to me as though it's plated all over! It's just that they have polished the side prior to plating! If it was only part plated you would easily get corrosion underneath, then the plating would lift!

Good tough tools though. I only have a few Hazet sockets and they seem to be really durable!

I have a lot more Stahlwille, and though it isn't as old, or has seen as much use, as some of my stuff, it's held up really well and I've had none of these issues of chrome flaking that are being discussed!

It is worth mentioning again, that Stahlwille use a different process to a lot of other companies. When new, Stahlwille sockets have a soft silver coating on the inside. In use, this wears off quickly, leaving the hard (and slightly shiny) satin chrome underneath! It would be a mistake to confuse this with flaking chrome!

I started buying Stahlwille probably 15 years ago, and in my experience their satin finish is very durable. It doesn't seem to pick up marks in the workshop as a polished finish would, it's much nicer to use than a matte finish, and it even seems to polish slightly with use, so almost seems to improve over time!

If chrome really is flaking off, then something is not right!

i looked a the socket again and i think you are right, it must be the polishing before the plating.

I also got a old Stahlwille Socket with Chrome-Alloy it looks almost dark - but nothing is coming off - but a few old Gedore Sockets (and some no-name) have chrome chipping.

i guess they buy the files from a filemaker. I don´t think it pays off to have a bunch of machines to make 4 different shaped files in cut 2...
I guess they buy the handles from Witte and they just assemble them. Maybe Pferd is the OEM since they still make a few files here like the chain saw files.

i guess that they were not properly deburred or that they are sligthly flattened from throwing the ratchet in the box with other ratchets during manufacturing. But the pawl is not as high as the teeth in the ratchet head so they don´t come in contact and the ratchet works flawless. So don´t worry

i guess that they were not properly deburred or that they are sligthly flattened from throwing the ratchet in the box with other ratchets during manufacturing. But the pawl is not as high as the teeth in the ratchet head so they don´t come in contact and the ratchet works flawless. So don´t worry

I'm pretty sure those look identical to the ones made by VBW. A German co-worker has one in the original colour of orange and they are marked Germany. but...VBW is owned by Stahlwille so maybe Hazet sources them elsewhere?


I recently bought my second Suprabeam penlight (not because the first one died on me....I "misplaced" it accidentally). I'm getting it for the second time because it worked flawlessly for 8 months of near daily use. 100 lumens of output and the focusing lens is done very well--narrow spot ,wide flood, or anywhere in between produces a nice even spread of light. I can definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for one. Suprabeam is a company based out of Denmark so I suppose they can be sourced easily in the EU.
