Maybe someone forgot to exchange the knurling tool in the lathe ? i dunno....

And he likes to do it consistently, too. :p

Yeah, the Anex nut setters I showed in the previous page are meant for their bit ratchets, but they can be used with the Hi-Five ratchet.

So, I checked it out and the result was 19mm; 2mm shorter than the Anex. :) Although I've been interested in the curved handled ones, they're non-essential right now....I'll hold off. :D

3786926505_7dae6c4d6e_b.jpg

The Gedore + Tohnichi seems to have softer springs then. From my experience dual pawl ratchets are always easier to turn than single pawl ratchets. Ko-ken has 2 pawls too, Nepros only 1.

I agree. The vintage ratchets with dual pawls tend to be smoother, but the side effect is the size of the head.

The ratchet says "Japan" on it (just like the ko-ken screwdrivers....) but the newer tone ratchets look a bit different , different switch and the "oil holes" are gone too, maybe thats the new ones from taiwan ? Hopefully they dont put "japan" on it because thats fraud :) Time for seppuku then for their managers :D
I wonder if they make sockets, wrenches etc. too because they dont offer size 11, 16 and 18mm ? But they have a nice copy of the Hazet assisstent in orange...

The more I look at your Tone, the more I see a shape similar to a chicken drumstick.

Tone might be sourcing bare ratchets from Flashtool (FPC).
Here's FPC and Tone's new ratchet:

FPC' RH-3KL, with their Taiwan sourced 72-tooth mechanism. The ratchet is not stamped "Japan" anywhere.
rh-3kl.jpg

Tone's RH-23K; a very similar ratchet design with a more standard 48-tooth mechanism. This again does not have "Japan" anywhere.
img55619959.jpg

This is FPC's standard (older) ratchet designs with the oil holes. It shares a very similar head design with the Tone that you have. They are stamped "Japan":
img10241228276.jpeg

@superautobacs: Do you have any of these Mitoloy swivel head ratcheting wrenches ?

I first saw that on Factory Gear magazine and thought it was pretty cool, but it's not an essential, especially at their price.

Thanks superautobacs for the write-up !

The heads of the newer FPC and Tone ratchets reminds me of these ko-ken ratchets...

:shocking:

So, I guess there was an exchange program between the two. Ratchet from Ko-ken; wrench from Beta. :bounce:

I wonder if the handle on the Beta was also welded on. :headscrat

Mmm, those drumsticks are pretty appetizing at those prices. :D

....how are the tolerances on the square drive; lots of wobble?

19mm ! Thats short !! I already tried to cut a bit to make it shorter, but the saw didn`t like chrome vanadium :D so I`ll try a cut off wheel & machine power... ;)

I took a comparison pic and some measurements:
From left to right:
Hi-Five type bit-ratchet, Anex bit ratchet, 10mm Ratcheting wrench w/ bit adaptor, 1/4" Facom ratchet w/ bit holder. Bits are 25mm long.

Height (with bit):

Hi-Five bit ratchet: 25,3 mm
Anex bit ratchet: 28,1 mm
Ratcheting wrench: 38,9 mm
1/4" Ratchet: 58,3 mm

;)

The sockets fit perfect on the square. The square/gear has only slight play. There is more play compared to Facom style ratchets which have no or virtually no play but less play than my SO ratchets.

Mmm, maybe create a stubby out of a hard Wekador bit. ;)

At least you have a wide range of depths covered though.

Somewhere i saw this :D ..... i thought it was japanese.. :D

yes but the other options are obsolete if you have the Hifive ratchet i think. Except if you use it with sockets, the torque may be to high, someone in a other thread said he broke one, so maybe a ratcheting wrench would be better in this case.

"Saltus "Pedalschlüssel" (pedal wrench) 15,25mm + 16,25mm"

I remember theses wrenches most died a horrific death due to ungreased pedal threads, over torquing and time. They use to be flash chrome plated the chrome lased as long as the wrench did.

Hozan made the best design but sadly was /is too soft for over TQ applications. Some day someone will make a wrench for the real world not the ideal new / cared for world.

Hey Monte, have you seen any Harry P. Will stuff?
I remember being in a pawn shop and finding some Will pliers with plastic grips. I never bought them, but I'd like to get my hands on their new production stuff which looks great.

What do you can recommend for bicycle tools ? I only have this wrench and one of these "bone" wrenches :D

I have to restore my bike completely because it was "away" for 2 yrs. (stolen) but the police recovered it. :) I already have all hex tools, but need a good pedal wrench, tire levers etc. since i`d like to ride a little bit more in the summer now.

I only saw 1 original Will plier (the last one pictured) but with their black/red handles. Other than that only rebranded will pliers ("Lux" etc. ) also with red/black 2-component handle with polished heads. This are the only good pics i found of them:

Funny that you mention Will now since i talked to the sales manager 2 weeks ago so when their holidays are over I feel that i receive a promo package with Will and Orbis pliers :)

:bounce: You must be a sweet talker to be able to get some free samplings.

To help those who are puzzled by the German language, can you tell us what the connection is between Orbis and Will? :D

Monte, can you reccomend any good online stores to buy German tools? Your thread has made me crave some nice German craftsmanship! :)

Which brands are you looking for ?
I ordered once from this company: http://www.tbs-aachen.de/
(Gedore, Hazet, Vigor, Carolus, KS-tools, channellock)
Unfortunately only in german, but they ship to the UK click (15.- Euro for up to 5 kg....)
[email protected]

I laso ordered once from this shop: Schuebo
(Heyco, Heytec, Knipex, Rennsteig, wera, etc.)
but unfortunately also only in german. [email protected]

Normally i just walk into the store since most tools are available here. In special cases i also ordered direct from the factory since they have no dealers here (HaFu, Orbis, Will). Other companies like Heyco and Böcker also ship directly from the factory if there is no dealer.

The best idea i guess would be to contact following german wholesaler:

Hoffmann UK Quality Tools Limited
Devonshire House
1 Devonshire Street
GB-London
W1W 5DR

Tel: +44 08 704 17-6111
Fax: +44 08 704 17-6113

I would call them and ask for a catalog, they carry everything from milling/Lathe tools, Hand tools, power tools etc. from Wera, PB Baumann, Bessey, Knipex, Kukko, Stahlwille, Ko-Ken, wiha, tajima, Weidmüller, Osca, halder, Noga, Hazet.... etc.

I spoke to him about my collecting habit :) and he wondered but will make some good promo prices and maybe send me a freebie :) ... We`ll see

Sometimes when i call companies once a week or twice :D you can gain good information or special prices or even get a invitation to drink a coffee at the factory .. So probably (if he keep his word) we`ll see some production pics by end of the year from Matador tools.

Both plier manufacturers Orbis and Will belong to Knipex. They are the specialists for rebadged tools.
Here`s a english PDF about their private label capabilities: Click
(special pliers, surfaces (polished, chrom, gold etc.), handles...)

Here`s the regular catalog (UK) click

I do not think a good pedal wrench exists there are just temporary ones it is a tool that take far more abuse than any other bicycle tool. Park and Pedros seem for me to last the longest this is my every day pedal wrench http://www.parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=27&item=PW-3 it has lasted 5 years a new record!

here is the chain tool I use with a bit of modification http://www.parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=5&item=CT-5 I remove the short T and replace it with an old rear quick release rod with a nut ot two to hold it in place.
chaintoolPM.jpg

I like the new age nylon levers by Pedros wide and very strong basically any tire lever is decent now just avoid metal unless you have DH or very old steel rims.

get a good floor pump my suggestion for best and what pros use world wide is Silca floor pumps

Got any pics of a "german" flea market! I wonder what one looks like? :) Do they have any bratwurst stands; looking for tools and eating bratwurst.... sounds like a perfect combination to me! :)

I didn't read the text too closely so I thought the pics of it were after you brought them back home, but when I saw the bucket of torque wrenches .... :lol_hitti:

Intriguing to see some of those brands, like Merry and Sanki, but never heard of Swell (is it Japanese as well?). Pretty neat to see some ballpoint pens in there; the same ones I once used when I was a kid!

Thanks for sharing!

Monte yes B would like I can send and international MO or put some tools together for your bike needs. Shipping from my end is not bad I just have to stay under 20lbs.

I the chain tool is a bargain to me I see no reason to spend more on one that gets daily abuse and it can be throw away easily when dead. I go through one a year at $5-7 verses buying one that is $35+ a year. The home mechanic the tool should last a lifetime, as I use it thousands a times a year.
