You must have a cracking selection / collection of tools you have amassed over the years Dave. Do you have any photos on here of your work bench set up, your toolbox(es!) and favourite tools you've used over the years?

That’s probably an understatement!

Unfortunately, compared to some on here, I don’t have a huge amount of workshop space, so with the amount of stuff crammed in it’s not ideal for pictures. I did put a couple of my ‘road box’ on, I think, the portable tool box thread.

My tools tend to be scattered around though. I’ve got a lot in the shop, but in all manner of storage (mostly old industrial cabinets) and a lot stored in my house as well. Over half of the stuff I do is away from base, so I need stuff in boxes that I can just grab and go as appropriate. Easier to keep secure that way as well!

Most of the really old stuff of my Grandfathers I’ve largely retired now, and I’m gradually putting on display, but I’ve still got lots of his stuff in the containers he stored them in, which have a certain vintage appeal of their own!

I’ll try and take a few shots next time the bench is clear. I’ve been making welding jigs this week, so there’s metal everywhere at the mo, and I’ve just had 3 boxes of bike parts dumped on me as well!

I bought a Milwaukee High Torque M18 Impact Wrench and it destroyed a Draper socket.

I also bought a Beta steel square. I don't do metal fabrication, but you never know when you will need something like this.

I have older Gedore sockets and I bought some missing sockets but I got the new model.
The quality seems to be lower than the older model.

Amazon had a ton of the Red stuff which is why I was curious.

But I don't know if that's what they're sending still. I used to think Carolus was a good recommendation for someone wanting something good but affordable, but I'm not so sure with Gedore Red.

It probably will lead to the Gedore brand being associated with the cheap stuff also, and give them a worse reputation.

I bought them on eBay. Are there any fake Gedore tools?
I can't imagine Gedore to be so low quality. I got the older Gedore sockets in 2012 and I used them a lot.

Well, based on other socket, it couldn't possibly be your fault, even if we turn heads off of the fact that the protection - not brave enough to call it chrome - folded right off. I think that there were few of likewise 'incidents' with high end sockets - saw it here. I guess that trying to warranty it would be hard, for single socket, probably not worth the money. I don't know, based by the coating, I'm not too far off the conclusion that someone could possibly do some homegrade coating of the used socket by himself. Yet again, there is usual suspects of QC - they have to, eventually, put some of the new and unexperienced workers. One more thing - we all blindly believe to stampings - everyone can stamp whatever he wants.
If that's single socket, forget about it... And throw it right in the bin. Based on your pics, your job requires not to have flying parts of metal around.

Gedore will make you send it back for 'inspection' if they deem it not warrantable they will just send you the same socket back. (Gedore UK)

Really not worth the hassle.

The best products from Gedore Red are their torque wrenches. The prices are quite acceptable i think. Over here they charge about 100 each for the smaller sizes.

Monte, I like that, very nice! I learned about Warsteiner beer watching the DTM Touring Championship Racing in the late 80's and early 90's as they sponsored the BMW M3s during those races.

I picked up these Hazet 798-12 hose clamp pliers. The description states that the jaw opening is adjustable. I figured that the thumb screw controls the jaw adjustment similar to locking pliers however loosening/tightening the thumb screw seems to have no effect on the jaw opening.

Anyone use these? How do they work?

The problem that I have is that when I back off the thumb screw the jaws do not open--the thumb screw only unscews from the post as you can see in the picture. I can pull the jaws apart manually though. Maybe I have to wear it in a bit.

They are expensive. I picked it up for $60 in the second-hand market, although it appears to be unused (or defective). After handling these, my recommendation is to pass on them and go with Hazet 798-9.

You are welcome JoeMA. Perhaps you have reached the end of the jaws travel at this point, and they can only move towards the opposite direction? You could have your local Hazet dealer have a look at it (if you have one) or contact Hazet directly with these pics.

$60 sounds like a good price and the tool looks pristine -I hope it works that way too. I would be tempted too at that price. Thanks for the info on Hazet 798-9.

Gedore Kneepads.

I started using knee pads recently. I don't have a lift so any under arch jobs have me kneeling on the road. Wish I had tried them years ago.

Hex 1.5, 2 ,2.5, 3mm and 4, 6mm punches.



2.5mm and larger have hex shanks. 2mm and smaller have round shanks that taper down to hex.



SwissGrip compared to Precision Soft-Grip. SwissGrip handle sizes are proportional to the tip size. Precision handles are the same size across all tip sizes. I like the larger handles for hex and torx though they are slower to use than the precision drivers and will wear a hole in your palm if used a lot.

Xiaomi/Wiha ratchet screwdriver from Aliexpress. Can be bought from around £12-13 ($16). I would be interested to know the extent of Wiha's involvement with the production of these dual-branded tools. May just be their brand name stuck on Chinese tools or maybe they advised on the design and specs etc.

It looks and feels quite good quality for the price but it's let down by the loose fitment of the bit holder in the handle which gives the the whole driver a wobbly/rattly feel.

What is Xiaomi ecological chain?

Xiaomi is a company that produces products and also supports other companies in China. You may see products from speakers, drones to simple bags in Mi Stores around the world. These products are not all produced by Xiaomi company but companies backed by Xiaomi. Xiaomi supports them by releasing some of those products under Mi brand or placing products in Mi Stores around the world.

Edit. I agree that most ratchet screwdrivers wobble, rattle. The Wiha actually feels premium in comparison others. The Facom was twice the price and feels pretty cheap and plastic.

Interesting that the Wiha bits have the little indents on the side, which lets handles/drivers like their 26-in-1 use a retention mechanism to hold on to the bit until the collar is slid down to release. Here, it looks like those indents serve no purpose since the bits are just retained electronically?

Yes, indents not used here, just the magnet. I guess it makes more sense to use standard 1/4" bits with indents than make bespoke bits without the indents when they are not needed.

I think what they're selling is NOS, I bought that exact pair of pliers and it's marked "Made in W. Germany". Can't speak for the other items.

Probably some liquidator that bought up the old stock?

Further to the other replies, all these Saltus tools seem to be on U.K. Amazon as well.

There’s always been a bit lurking there, but there’s a lot of obviously NOS at present, and the prices are pretty keen.

Aside from some very reasonably priced pliers, there are things like a 12 piece ring spanner (box end wrench) set, going up to 32mm, for a reasonable £46.

If anyone is not familiar with Saltus, they are top quality German made tools. Unusually, for German tools, they are polished chrome, and quality is pretty decent!

I love how Facom pliers does their springs. I feel Facom is a very understated manufacturer, they produce great quality tools. Specifically their amazing oil filter wrench and much more.

Regarding Saltus. Just had a bit more of a look on Amazon. Some of the Saltus socket sets on Amazon UK are made up of some really random sizes. The full sets though are a reasonable price if they are German made and good quality. The shiney chrome is a bit confusing when looking at German tools.

This spanner having 'Germany' printed on it makes me question COO as I would assume that it was not made in Germany. It is a slightly odd design though with six point and a slotted screw on the side.
